Should he be included in the category Maya people since he was very likely not of Maya ethnicity? Eluchil404 16:12, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We probably need some more specific Mesoamerican personage categories (ie cats which group figures by related historical contexts, and not presumed 'ethnicity'), but I'd say until the scheme is revised it would be ok to retain both the Category:Mesoamerican people and Category:Maya people cats. This figure's origins are not entirely nailed down, and as a figure from Maya dynastic politics and records needs to be associated with some Maya-related category, even if perhaps or probably not being Maya himself. The higher-level Mesoamerica cat is presently used to signify their possibly foreign, or unspecified, origins.--cjllw | TALK 00:08, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's a shame there isn't a Category:People from Tikal that he could be added to since that would probably be better even if it was a subcat of Maya people. As you say, he certainly was a figure in Maya politics even if he wasn't Maya political figure.  :-) Looking closely at the cat description he can faily be described as from the historical pre-Columbian Maya civilization of Mesoamerica since he is known solely from Maya inscriptions so I am happy to keep the category, but look forward to its being subdivided more helpfully (and being full enough to need such subdivision). Yes, similar to how we have a Category:Rulers of Palenque, we'll need others for sites where there's a good number of historical personages identified (each of whom could well end up with their own article). I'm not entirely satisfied with the present cat. name tho'- for eg the listing at Palenque includes several who were not actually rulers per se, eg Janaab' Pakal aka Pakal I. Category:People from/of Maya polity could be a more inclusive alternative, or perhaps something like Category:Rulers and dynastic figures of Maya polity; it should not be a problem if one figure appears in more than one of these cats where they are associated with two or more sites.
Not sure at this stage whether it'd be likely that any other types of personages would warrant articles, eg the scribes/artists of Maya inscriptions who have signed their works (these could be interesting as a cat in their own right, since several left works at multiple sites). Open to other ideas...--cjllw | TALK 03:29, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
