Mac OSX Version

Can someone add that there is a confirmed Mac version being demo'd at MacWorld this week. Link to the ZDNet article here: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6226087.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.100.157.83 (talk) 13:05, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

I've done it! Philcluff (talk) 13:23, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

don't forget to put it into the little information box under "platforms", its still just says windows, nds and mobile phone,

It will be a simultaneous release with the PC version: http://www.news.com/Coming-to-the-Mac-in-2008-Spore/2100-1043_3-6226087.html?tag=nefd.top B25mtchll (talk) 21:10, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Release Date

http://totalspore.com/articles/official-spore-news/spore-release-date-official/

Please see WP:RS. This is not a reliable source. --Yamla 16:06, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
According to this, the game is six months away... And early 2008 was hinted last May or something, right? (And BTW Amazon release dates are not accurate at all.) Weeliljimmy 21:56, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Old news - already noted in the article. However, there's still no definitive, announced release date. JAF1970 16:12, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
I still don't see an official release date on the maxis website, but amazon.com has it available for pre-order [1] and says it will be released March 3, 2008. Is this reliable enough?Sag1738 (talk) 01:47, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Absolutely not. JAF1970 (talk) 03:57, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
They'll just change the release date if need be. Heck, right now it says May 1, 2008.Nextgenerationliberty (talk) 19:24, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Internet access

Will this be simalar to a MMORPG or will internet access be needed only be needed for downloads etc. I've only got about 30Kbps internet access and have never been able to play any games online. Will I be able to play this? also, please leave the answer on my talk page - Wardhog 17:43, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

It's in the article. You only need the internet to download other player models that they've uploaded. So your friend can upload a civilization on the net, you can download it and play against it.

I read, or maybe saw a video, that even though one neat feature of Spore is that you'll download other species, which will be very small files, the game will include 100s of pre-made species, buildings, vehicles, etc. Weeliljimmy 21:58, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, but this is not a forum. Article related discussion, please. JAF1970 22:31, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Spore Release Date / Box art

How about adding it in the article and writing that it is not the official box art but just Amazon?

Not sure if this warrants adding, but Amazon.com has a release date (March 4th, 2008) and box art:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FKBCX4/

KiTA 00:05, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Aaand apparently I'm waaay late to the party here.

KiTA 00:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes you are.

1. AMAZON IS NOT ELECTRONIC ARTS. They do not design the box art. They do not make release dates. All they can do is use placeholders. JAF1970 15:29, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Though I understand the argument not to use the Amazon box placeholder, why not use the already released and EA approved logo for the game? It is certainly recognized both inside and outside the gaming community, and WP does have a policy of using logos when discussing products for critical review. --Knulclunk 02:24, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Why put anything? It's not necessary right now. JAF1970 05:00, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
It makes the page look better. Why not put it? Zavinout 10:09 26 September (GMT +1) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 153.110.137.15 (talk) 08:10, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
No it does not. It's disseminating false information. JAF1970 03:28, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
An EA approved logo is not false information. Zavinout 05 Oktober 2007 —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 13:51, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
There's no box art yet. Period. End of story. And posting just a logo for a retail game isn't good. JAF1970 14:46, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Look, sorry if I am being rude, but a logo would be just fine in my opinion. If it can be legally used and all that, and is an actual logo that was made by EA, etc etc, it would be fine. Sorry to say this, but JAF1970 is being too controlling here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by F50 Man (talkcontribs) 20:24, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
No, you're right. I posted the official Spore logo, which can be found on Spore.com and other official press releases. That should suffice til the actual box is posted. JAF1970 21:54, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Unmentioned source of inspiration?

Not that i'm crediting this as actually being a source, or anything the creators have mentioned before, but...

Came across the old game 'Eco' about a half hour ago whilst playing with a new Atari ST emulator, and was struck by a primitive similarity to the Creature phase. Check it out.. though it's probably not fit for mention in the main text, it could perhaps be worth a link in the related articles section (as it has it's own Wikipedia page): http://www.mobygames.com/game/eco/

Did give me pause for thought a bit that :) Especially as one of the developers is called 'Ocean', and it was released by Ocean games - is there a link? 82.46.180.56 02:11, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Eco is not quite the same as Spore, and Wright did not derive Spore from it, anyway. Wright derived Spore from his Sim games -- SimEarth and SimLife in particular. JAF1970 05:03, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and Powers of Ten was the other major influence on Wright. JAF1970 17:25, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

By Eco, did you mean EVO?

E.V.O. was an SNES game where you evolved from a fish, go onto dry land, etc. and gain different body parts

the PS2 games Magic Pengel and Graffiti Kingdom boast the ability to create your own creatures by drawing them. They even animate well, and can produce pretty amazing characters. I've seen recreations varying from the King in Katamari Damacy to Orbital Frames from Zone of Enders. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.143.218.12 (talk) 17:49, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Amazon is NOT Electronic Arts

Until Amazon buys Electronic Arts or Maxis, they are NOT an official source of information, nor are they even reliable. STOP USING THEM. JAF1970 18:59, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

I agree with User:JAF1970, Amazon isn't an official source for information, the best source for information will be the creators of the Spore Game "Electronic Arts" and their website, which provides the correct info, and the official release date. Fire Monkey (talk) 14:17, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Not even Will Wright or Maxis. Only Electronic Arts can set a firm release date. JAF1970 (talk) 15:15, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

I Agree "Electronic Arts" is the one who's going to publish the Game, and they should decide what the release date of the Game should be, without people rushing them to publish a release date, and from what i know from reviews, the game itself seems massive and it shouldn't be rushed by the creators, like LucasArts did with SWKOTOR 2 where loads of scenes and features got erased and are now trying to bring them back to the game a few years later. Fire Monkey (talk) 16:13, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Actually, the game is finished. Wright is currently diddling with the interface to make it accessible to everyone. JAF1970 (talk) 20:24, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

I do hope the Spore game is off-line, because like User:Wardhog i've never been able to play online games because of the broadband speed and the Broadband policy, and if the Spore game is off-line and internet isn't needed to play it, then i'll pre-order it or buy it when it's released. Fire Monkey (talk) 19:03, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

It may pay to read the various sources supporting the article, but in a nutshell: the game will be released with a myriad of various beasts of various niches. They may populate your game and supplement you with the necesary predators and prey animals and eventual civilisations. However, with an online connection, the game will populate itself with plusminus 2 kB files for other races, building- and vehicle styles. The game, as is, will function perfectly without an Internet connection, as far as we are told so far. Dinictus (talk) 15:25, 25 November 2007

Good to hear, i've been waiting patiently for a reply to my previous message, but if there's less things on the game when being off-line that would mean it would be quicker to conquer the universe, but is there any word on whether you can design your own space ships or buildings or even create your own Human civilization which i wouldn't mind re-creating the Galactic Empire on the star wars article SKYNET X1000 (talk) 20:24, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Although I don't have time to go look for a source right now, this could be useful for you specifically ;) If I remember correctly from the original demo (the one that's all over the Internet), you can design the buildings/vehicles in addition, of course, to the race itself. I don't think he said anything about designing the ship, though. ~Floppie(talkcontribs) 20:35, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

If that's the case, wouldn't the designing the space ship be mentioned as being part of the vehicle category, and what about setting your own government system and laws even renaming your empire after certain generations have past like for example, (Galactic Empire to Federation), (Federation to Independent Alliance or to the Asuran Empire) did he mention anything about those... SKYNET X1000 (talk) 19:38, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Question Cancelled, discussion becoming not article based. SKYNET X1000 19:29, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Shrinking the article

I don't think the article can be shrunk any more til actual release. When the game is released, a lot of the release date stuff will be moved to the Development of Spore article as a part of its dev history, and the speculative stuff will be removed. When the game is actually released, just the description of play for each phase will remain. JAF1970 22:12, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Condense article - again, I think this is impossible to do til the actual game is released. 1/3 of the article is in a new article as it is. I think for a AAA major unreleased mega-title, the article is an appropriate size. JAF1970 17:24, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Condensed it again. Took out references to HOW the game was made - keeping focus on what the game IS. JAF1970 16:30, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Some more condensation - moved a chunk out of the Space Phase, and made the sandbox mode its own subsection. I think it scans better. JAF1970 01:45, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Clean up

This article needs to be cleared and rewritten due to somones screw up with the html. The information is screwed up with the comments that people left as messages in the editing box refrain from doing so unless its completely nessacarry danieljackson 22:22, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Radio 5 Alive interview

The six months reference from this interview was taken out of context, the actual interview transcript reads like this:
Interviewer: "Alright, so.. Maybe six months?"

Will: "Yeah, um.. Roughly."
This is a vague answer to a vague question. The reference of the release date being six months away is no better a source than Amazon.com or any of the other resellers and should be removed.Sweeces 03:06, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

However, Will Wright is DIRECTLY INVOLVED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME. I think he'd know when the game will be ready. Keep in mind, you neglected to mention Wright stated that the game is in a fully playable state and what they're focusing on now is making the game accessible to new users, trying to get it to The Sims 2 level of user-friendliness, according to other interviews with him recently. What, did you think Wright has been talking to only one, low-level, minor publication? See: 1UP, EGM, PC Gamer, etc.
Amazon, on the other hand, has zero involvement with the game. They are not developing it. They are not publishing it. JAF1970 15:30, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
They're a frickin' eBay clone, all they do is sell stuff. Relying on them for a release date is like relying on toothpaste to brush your teeth for you. Kiminatheguardian (talk) 23:31, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Wii

It's not news Will Wright wants to make the game for other platforms. However, the Wii is not an official platform yet. Please see Development of Spore:

So, we have the Wii covered already. Anything more is for Development of Spore. Platform announcements are EA's job. JAF1970 15:30, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Once more, Other platforms have been discussed, but not officially announced. Electronic Arts is the only one to confirm a release date or platform announcement. Any rumors or statements by Wright on platforms are for Development of Spore. JAF1970 21:03, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

It's officially on Wii now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.84.34.24 (talk) 16:28, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

From whom? Wright? He doesn't make those decisions. EA does. When EA says there's a Wii platform coming out, feel free. Wright's already "confirmed" that there's a Wii version, an Xbox 360 version, a PS3 version, a PSP version, etc. EA squashed him and said that there's only a PC, mobiile and DS version officially coming out. Anything else will be officially announced. If you want to post those links in Development of Spore, feel free. JAF1970 18:13, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Wait, so if it's not officially confirmed, shouldnn't the listing of consoles exclude the Wii since EA denied it and Wright said that there may be another game for the Wii instead of spore? InsaneZeroG 19:48, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Best not to say anything in th main Spore article. That's what Development of Spore is for. JAF1970 19:50, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
read that article. For one, even if Will said it was coming on the Wii specifically, it's not proof or confirmation. But Will talks about the Wii, the PS3 and the 360. NONE OF THAT IS CONFIRMATION. Please do NOT post that article any more. JAF1970 04:01, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
How is the creator of the game saying Spore is being developed for the Wii not confirmation? I don't think you can be any more certain than that. Will Wright had previously said that he would like to have Spore on all current platforms, but now he has stated that it is actually in development for the Wii. (a source, if you would like it) --Filovirus 05:21, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the Guardian is wrong - there is no actual Wii development going on right now. "We're doing Spore on the Wii," Wright stated seemingly off the cuff. Wright didn't elaborate on further plans for the Wii version, nor whether it would accompany the PC version slated for Q2 2008. EA had not responded to requests for comment as of press time. (GameSpot) Until EA confirms, it's no different than what Wright ha stated a year ago. JAF1970 16:27, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
How? Because EA immediately released a press release SPECIFICALLY STATING that those systems were not officially announced. Ever heard of The Golden Rule? "He who has the gold, makes the rules, and by the way, Maxis has not spent one iota of development manpower on any Wii development. Wright has expressed interest in developing other console versions, including the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 - those are not listed either. Post whatever interviews you like in Development of Spore - if anything, it's most appropriate there. I see no reason why you can't post it in the appropriate article and not here. Until Electronic Arts issues a press release stating anything about Wii or any other console development, do not post any other systems that have not been specifically announced by Electronic Arts.
I also detect console fanboyism in this posting. Please take it to the internet newsgroups, which have no moderation. JAF1970 05:54, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
By the way, that is a pretty old article. Had Wii been officially announced for Spore, how come no other GAMING SITES - and Guardian is not a gaming site - have reported this news, like Joystiq, Kotaku, IGN, 1UP, Wiifanboy.com? The reason is this - the news is old, there's been no update, and EA has announced nothing. The most Wright has talked about in the past few months is that the Wii would be a challenge to develop for. If you find news from a real game site that's dated in October 2007 or beyond, post it. Post Wright interviews at the appropriate spot. One of the articles states explicitly Wright wants to bring it to the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 already there. There's a reason its in Development of Spore and not here - EA says there's only 3 versions being developed: PC, DS and mobiles, and nothing else has even started development. Spore for the PC is eating up most of the manpower. JAF1970 06:19, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
GameSpot has reported the comments, but it's interesting to note that Wright said it "off-the-cuff" and that he had no plans yet for the Wii version. So, basically, he's repeating what he said a year ago - it's coming out for 7th gen consoles, but nothing's done about it yet. JAF1970 16:25, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
I have a source right here that it's coming to the Wii. (71.10.172.137 01:39, 30 October 2007 (UTC))
That's the same source, for crying out loud. --Yamla 01:41, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
And EA has been one big "No Comment", which means there's no new news. Keep in mind, Wright was talking about the Wii, not about Spore, and tossed off "Oh, it'll be on the Wii" - if you extrapolate, he'd probably add "in the future". JAF1970 01:43, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Although this might not count,Issue 18(I think) of N Gamer(a British Nintendo magazine) mentioned that Spore was coming to Wii (in its review of Spore it said in the Platforms collum DS/(aka. and)Wii) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.104.158.166 (talk) 17:37, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

So? Wright expressed the desire to release the game on other platforms, such as seventh generation consoles, the PlayStation Portable and the Apple Macintosh.[32] In a GameSpy interview, Wright stated, "Well, actually we are going to go on all platforms, but we will come out on PC first. We will even come out on cell phones and stuff."[33] We didn't list the 360, PS3, PSP, Mac, etc, either, even though Wright said it. There's NO MANPOWER working on those versions, including the Wii. JAF1970 (talk) 23:29, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Infobox

Someone add to the infobox that the release date should be in April 2008 or at least Q2 2008. --PET 13:12, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Not til EA gives a definite release date. EA's said stuff like "sometime in 2005" "sometime in 2006" "sometime in 2007" before. Until there's a confirmed, solid, specific date... JAF1970 14:53, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Article length

The article isn't all that long anymore. JAF1970 16:13, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Stop the Wii talk

As of November 12, 2007, Electronic Arts has been utterly silent, and there has not been a shifting of manpower from the Windows, mobile phone or DS versions. Stop posting that tired old link because it's basically meaningless, where Wright already discussed console versions in the E3 2006 article listed in Development of Spore. He has already said there will be an Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and Wii version - none of them have been announced. Electronic Arts immediately quashed any talk of other consoles. The Wii "version" is already discussed HERE. JAF1970 04:14, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

PC Gamer January 2008 preview

[2], [3], [4], [5]. JACOPLANE • 2007-12-11 16:44

That was useful - made some changes based on it. ie. It's now Spice, not Simoleons. JAF1970 (talk) 06:14, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
What if they actually made several currencies, with one chosen at random for each planet ? In yet another magazine I saw they had played the civilization stage gathering gas. Considering the "random" nature of Spore, I guess this is pretty possible. Now, what could we write in the article regarding this feature ? Orteil (talk) 02:44, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
They're trying to make the game fun, not annoyingly complicated. Kiminatheguardian (talk) 23:33, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Requirements?

Has anyone heard anything about the requirements for play on the PC platform? In most big game releases I believe we would have heard something by now (assuming the Spring 2008 release that they've maintained). Especially considering there are a number of game that are requiring dual-core now (ie. Shadowrun (2007 video game)), this seems a little strange to me. --Kickstart70-T-C 04:34, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Nothing has been made definitive yet. However, Wright is currently making the game more "accessible", so there will be lower system requirements than you might think. JAF1970 (talk) 05:51, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
I do hope the game isn't online, i never buy online games because of the Internet cost. SKYNET X7000 (talk) 10:24, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
It is not an online game. You can play the game offline and online for downloading other stuff. --SkyWalker (talk) 15:13, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
The game is natively online, but is not required. Please note, this is not a forum. JAF1970 (talk) 17:06, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

The picture of the creature editor seems pretty out-dated. In my opinion this picture shows how the creature editor looks like more accurately. Should we youse this picture instead? Pseudoserpent (talk) 22:01, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah the site is pretty outdated, which is kind of sad. --CitrusFreak12 (talk) 15:44, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

release date

is this game actually going to be released....? or might it be cancelled due to massive technical difficulties. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.19.155.125 (talk) 19:20, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Spore IS going to be realeased, but they did a lot of polishing in the last years. Spore is already in a playebal build, and they are now makeig it more system compatible, better graphyx and more user-friendly. The other reason for the delay is bussinese, because EA dosen't want to release the game when there are other REALLY good titles to choose from, like halo 3, etc... because then the person has too choose, and that would make less income. Pseudoserpent (talk) 20:27, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

It could monitor this page (and possibly Development of Spore) for changes which add either Wii or 360 and revert them automatically! Obviously I am kidding here but, sheesh, it's getting bad! Dansiman (talk|Contribs) 13:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Spore is officially rated RP (Rating Pending). (See ESRB Ratings Guide) Do not remove. JAF1970 (talk) 15:40, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

God Game should actually be life simulator

I think the type of game it is listed as should be more of a life simulator than god game, as there is no real supernatural ability like miracles or such in it, only the evolution of life and the use of technology. It should be listed as Life Simulator. Kiminatheguardian (talk) 15:12, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

God game is not being an actual theological god. Just a controller of all life. Spore is a God game. (Heck, it's an Intelligent Design game lol) JAF1970 (talk) 20:14, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Alright, I conceed. I just had a little twitch about it 'cause I'm atheist and I find the concept of a God harmful to my braincells. Kiminatheguardian (talk) 23:19, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Spice as Currency

Just out of curiosity, I imagine the usage of Spice here as currency in the Civ and Space phases is a reference to Dune's Spice and not generic spice. I don't quite get why we would like a link to that generic page. Just a thought. 74.59.83.158 (talk) 20:30, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

It might be very likely be the Spice in dune, but no-one has made an anouncment to wether the spice in the game refers to the one in dune.
Until EA states it, Spice should be linked to generic spice. Pseudoserpent (talk) 08:00, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

spice is probably a generic term referring to the fact that it was a valuable trading commodity in days gone by, wars have actually been fought over things such as nutmeg because it was so valuable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.145.186.113 (talk) 13:42, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
