ALA's list of most challenged books[edit]

The article states: "Because of its open and honest portrayal of life, the books have made the American Library Association's (ALA) list of most challenged books for several years, making it number one on the list in 2004 for their sexual content, where other books such as Harry Potter, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Catcher in the Rye have also made the list." First off, that sentence is way too long. However, my main problem is that I don't think the books are on the list because "of its open and honest portrayal of life." Even later in that sentence the entry's author revises this claim by stating it is number 1 for "sexual content." The phrasing of this article is misleading. It seems the entry's author is trying to make the reader see that it is ridiculous for these books to be challenged. I admit that I have not read the books, which is why I did not edit the article. I would like someone who has read them to look at this entry to determine if it seems biased. Copeland1013 20:02, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One of the external links was to the ALA article where it actually says, "The Alice series drew complaints from parents and others concerned about the books' sexual content." I changed that to a reference and altered the sentence to be more NPOV. Ospinad (talk) 19:11, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Time frame?[edit]

What is the time frame that these books were published in? Something as simple as copyright dates would give the reader of this entry some social context. For example, the fact that the first three books are considered prequels hints that they were written after most (or all?) of the series, but that's an inference that the reader has to make.--24.6.198.12 (talk) 09:46, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Goals for Improving the Article[edit]

I am planning to make some changes to the article this week. First, I plan on adding a biography section that lightly details Naylor's life, books written, awards received, and her motivation to write the Alice series. This will help the reader understand the motives behind the Alice series in greater understanding. I also will be writing a reception section that includes both positive and negative viewpoints to the series. This will broaden the scope of the article by stating why the books have been banned so often and praised depending on the viewpoint. After both of these sections are added, the lead section will be rewritten to follow Wikipedia's guidelines. Currently, the lead section includes information not expanded on in the actual article, so by doing so, the article will achieve a higher standard. Additionally, I will copyedit the sections "Characters" and "The Alice series" in order to improve the language and remove bias and informalities.
