added to the synopsis so the story outline is more complete. Probably needs editing. Xrabohrok1 (talk) 15:39, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[Slashboxing][edit]

Don't have time to edit the page but Hildy doesn't slashbox, just reports on it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.122.151.244 (talk) 19:52, 24 November 2008‎

Hildy Johnson[edit]

The name of this character is a clear reference to the Cary Grant / Rosalind Russell film His Girl Friday, where Russell's character, the female lead, is named Hildy Johnson and is also a newspaper reporter. Has anyone read Steel Beach and know if this reference fits into the story in any other ways? -- Eiríkr Útlendi | Tala við mig 01:15, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That, my friend, was one F'ing brilliant question. When i read the novel, i recognized the reference, and enjoyed the parallel as far as i could see it. And i just interrogated my film consultant, who not only knows the film much better than i but also supplied a crucial fact: while in the film, Hildy and the Grant char are a divorced couple who still interact thru work (Hollywood comedy of remarriage theme), the film derives from a play where both of the lead chars are male. So Varley's character's sex change (changes, IIRC!) reflect the "sex change" performed on Hildy by the film makers. IMO, that's rich and brilliant humor (even tho i did, IIRC, finally (figuratively) throw the novel across the room and leave it unfinished).
