"STEVE Canyon Rangers"[edit]

When they first appeared on Letterman, i thot i heard "Steve Canyon" and then realized they were clearly saying "Steep". But they were discussed on tonite's show, and i was sure (dead sober) that i had heard them each say "Steve Canyon Rangers" in quick succession.
A google search for "Steve Canyon Rangers" produces 30 hits, including

  1. fans saying "Oh, I misheard it as 'Steve Canyon Rangers' but I was wrong" (Several instances)
  2. minor venues hosting them w/o any sign they ever heard it as "steep
  3. a review spelling it right but adding (tongue in cheek?)
There is a rumor that “Steve Martin” is getting ready to shorten the name of his act to the “Steve Canyon Rangers”—further evidence of genetic tinkering with bluegrass. Eminently decipherable and tri-digitally informative. Recommended for anyone interested in conspiracy theories of the banjo.CVS
  4. "Top Ten Predictions for 2012" ...."7. Attempting to capitalize on both their association with Steve Martin and the public’s fondness for vintage 50’s comics, the Steep Canyon Rangers change their name to the Steve Canyon Rangers." ... "9. An Iranian bluegrass fan downloads a new ringtone from the Red Knuckles web site. The ringtone contains a virus that wipes out Iran’s uranium enrichment program. Again."
  5. Transcription of long NPR interview includes "Mr. MARTIN: Well, in my banjo show, when I work with the Steve Canyon Rangers, which I really enjoy doing."
  6. URL, Headline above graphic of album cover, and lettering on album cover, bpth have "Steep Canyon" but is captioned with "When you give your gift of $60 or more to WICN, we will thank you with Steve Canyon Rangers’ brand new album Tell The Ones I Love. Since 2009 the Steep Canyon Rangers...."
  7. Performance promotion by DC Metro Theater Arts consistently uses "Steep Canyon" in HTML text but is accompanied by a photo of the group with caption "Steve Martin, Edi Brickell, and the Steve Canyon Rangers. Photo courtesy of Wolf Trap."

I'm using the above evidence as refs supporting "apparently 'Steve Canyon' versions reflect mishearings and misrememberings of the band's name."
