Satire[edit]

I'm changing the reference to Professor Levinson as an American winner of the Nobel prize, because readers understand that the "Nobel" reference is pure media hype. The author's satire is evident in the fact that there is no Nobel prize in the field for which Levinson was supposedly honored. Levinson is simply a publicity-seeking academic who goes to Brazil to have a good time, hiring a Brazilian to do all his research for him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lastudies (talkcontribs) 16:19, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

References[edit]

Someone contacted me to point out that I did not attach references to points of interpretation of the plot. I know citations are needed, but I do not yet have the time to do them. I have taught this novel in a comparative race relations course for over 30 years (I've lost count of the number of classes, but about 80). I never met the author, but I have discussed the novel with staff of the foundation in Salvador that he created before he died. I have corresponded with some of the novel's Afro-Brazilian critics, including the late Abdias do Nascimento and his wife. Citations are on my to-do list. I welcome dialogue with other scholars who teach this novel. My e-mail is lastudies2@gmail.com, and I'm at Cal State U. Los Angeles.
