Twinning?[edit]

I found the following had come adrift from its context "Tregaron is twinned with Brittany, France". It will need a citation if it's to be restored. Otherwise, it's unlikely to be missed by many if simply left out. Cheers, Bjenks (talk) 16:09, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Archaeology[edit]

The presence of three early Christian engraved stones and a circular churchyard make it likely this was an early foundation.[1] Er, can you be a bit more specific about this citation, please, Cwmhiraeth? Caron is not Carausius[edit]

Caron is almost certainly not Carausius for the following reasons: 1. Carausius was Menapian, not Welsh 2. If the name Carausius had survived in modern Welsh, it would be something like *Cereus and not Caron 3. It is doubtful that the name Carausius would survive from the 3rd Century to become a place name, even a Roman Usurper as prominent in Welsh History as Maximus Magnus is not remembered in any place name, even the earliest records garble his name as 'Macsen' (probably confusing him with Maxentius) 4. The element Caron (first attested as Karaun) is best interpreted not as a personal name, but (as the Dictionary of Welsh Place Names suggests) as a territorial name (cf. Ceredigion) based on the personal name Car, which could be from Latin 'Carus'. 5. Geoffery of Monmouth is hardly a reliable source for Welsh History.

Images[edit]

I recently reverted an unsourced addition of text [1] incidentally removing an image added at the same time by User:Thunderbirds12345. I later replaced the image [2]. Bjenks has suggested that the image is not suitable for the page. I have no strong preference either way. What do others think? I have also removed a gallery that I considered served no special purpose per Wikipedia:Image use policy with the edit summary '(Removed gallery serving no special purpose see WP:Image use policy. Retaining one image of the church)'. Amongst other things in the policy is 'One rule of thumb to consider: if, due to its content, such a gallery would only lend itself to a title along the lines of "Gallery" or "Images of [insert article title]", as opposed to a more descriptive title, the gallery should either be revamped or moved to the Commons'. Since the ruined farm is not mentioned in the text, it does not need to be in the article. On the point of galleries in general, my view is that if an image does not illustrate something in the text, it should be in Commons and not in the article. In other words, in almost all cases, a gallery, however visually appealing, is not helpful in understanding the encyclopaedic content of the article. I disagreed with the removal of the gallery in toto and commented to SovalValtos: "The gallery you've removed without reasonable explanation did in fact serve the special purpose of showing readers what Tregaron is like, and illustrating features like the river, the 13th-century hotel, and other built heritage. And what makes you believe an extraneous image of a ruin (which is not even in Tregaron and is not mentioned in the article) has any special purpose."
The relevant policy states early on that "the use of a gallery section may be appropriate in some Wikipedia articles if a collection of images can illustrate aspects of a subject that cannot be easily or adequately described by text or individual images" and "images in the gallery collectively must have encyclopedic value and add to the reader's understanding of the subject." I believe it is properly encyclopedic to inform readers what this historic township looks like, which can be done better in pictures than words. And if objection rests formally on the use of the title "gallery" rather than being more "appropriately titled", I propose that the content be restored under a title such as "Heritage views" or "Views of the township". The historicity of Tregaron requires further expansion, e.g., of the story of its most notable citizen Henry Richard, whose statue stands in the centre of the old market square. I would prefer to see the gallery pics attached to sections of their own but should be kept pending that improvement (with a photo of the Richard statue added). There doesn't seem to be a huge difference of opinion here. From the original gallery, I suggest the Talbot Hotel could go back inline, but not the interior. A picture of a river doesn't seem helpful, and the memorial hall is already in the main pic. One of the street scenes could go inline. The main pic needs a caption. Is this fair? I am happy with that User:Tony Holkham. I could not understand why there was resistance to removing a faultily conceived gallery and some images, but now see that the uploader of the images to Commons, and the gallery to this article, was Bjenks using a different user name User:Aeronian.SovalValtos (talk) 22:30, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Infobox caption done. Talbot image added. The church image could do with replacing when there is a better one available from a different angle with less foreground clutter. Notable people: verification[edit]

I'm, in principle, sympathetic to the inclusion of William Ian Jones OBE in this section, but (i) his notability needs to be established, preferably by an article on him; (ii) he can't properly be included without verification of his connection with Tregaron. Also, as it happens, the citation for his credentials as an FRCS produces (at least for my repeated searches) the information "The details you have entered do not match a member of this College". Anyway, that type of search page does not meet the WP requirements for verification. And I'm aware that some worthy others in this list are not strongly verified. Dear editor
William Ian Jones passed away on Tuesday 2 January 2024.
He was born in Tregaron 5th November 1932 to Ebenezer Jones chemist in Tregaron and Dilys Jones (nee Waters) one time French and Latin teacher . post mistress at Tregaron and-long time governor at Tregaron County School .
Mr Jones studied medicine at Cardiff University and after serving two years national service returned to the UK to study ENT under Professor Harrington in London. For nearly two years after gaining his fellowship he was attached to the University of Kingston in Jamaica lecturing, furthering his medical expertise at its hospital and undertaking research .
In 1967 he returned to Uk and took up a position he had coveted at Singleton hospital , Swansea and Prince Phillip Hospital Llanelli.
From then on he worked tirelessly to improve services of the NHS on the Swansea Health Board, The BMA council of Wales of which he was chairman and also on the board of the UK BMA serving for many years on the disciplinary committee.
He also volunteered to keep the emergency department at Singleton open for a further 10 years after it s closure was first mooted.
At the end of his fine career he was awarded the OBE for his services to medicine.
He was always a proud son of Tregaron and at every opportunity would talk about it , his friends there and his family roots that ran deep in that area.
An obituary has been set up on the Swansea RFC website to celebrate his 20 years plus service as medical officer for the ‘Whites’ .
