All these words yet it doesn't say that it actually flew round the moon. Rcbutcher (talk) 15:24, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Zond 4 was launched outside of a lunar launch window- actually almost exactly midway between one and the following one. James Oberg points out that it basically served as a lunar mission without the complication of the real moon getting in the way of the trajectory calculations. Zond 5 was the first to actually circumnavigate the moon. CFLeon (talk) 23:36, 2 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"unintentionally"?[edit]

I checked the NSSDC source given and it DOES use that phrasing. Utter nonsense, of course- what was that writer smoking? Z4 was NOT launched during a lunar launch window- it could not have reached Luna on that date with the rocket used WHATEVER their intentions were, and the Soviet engineers were NOT idiots. They had missed the proper lunar window, and had a rocket fueled with a spacecraft on it and ready to go. They did a simliar thing back in 1965 when the probe that became Zond 3 missed the Mars window. So they launched it anyway, had it flyby the Moon and serve as a communications test. It's ironic that THAT was one of the only two of the early lunar/planetary probes that actually worked as it was supposed to (the only other exception until 1966 was Luna 3, possibly Luna 2). I rewrote section and removed the nonsensical reference. CFLeon (talk) 20:59, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
