Reshiram (レシラム, Reshiramu), Zekrom (ゼクロム, Zekuromu) and Kyurem (キュレム, Kyuremu) are Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. Created by Ken Sugimori, Reshiram, Zekrom and Kyurem first appeared in the video games Pokémon Black and White, also appearing in various merchandise, spinoff titles and animated and printed adaptations of the franchise.

Reshiram, Zekrom and Kyurem are a trio of dragon-like legendary Pokémon, and serve as the version mascots of Pokémon Black, White, Black 2 and White 2. In their first appearance in Pokémon Black and White, Reshiram and Zekrom played an integral role in the game's plot and backstory, with Kyurem appearing as an optional boss character. Kyurem would play a larger role in the games' direct sequels Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, where it served as a major antagonist. These games also saw Kyurem gain the ability to transform into two alternate forms, Black Kyurem (ブラックキュレム, Burakku Kyuremu) amd White Kyurem (ホワイトキュレム, Howaito Kyuremu), created by combining with Zekrom or Reshiram respectively. Reshiram, Zekrom and Kyurem have been well-received, with (...).

Design and characteristics[edit]

According to art director Ken Sugimori, the version mascots of Pokémon Black and White were to be black and white dragons, of the Fire- and Electric- types. In order to develop a contrast between the two, they were designed with the ideas of "men vs. women" and "power vs. naivety" in mind. Both Pokémon were designed with a heavy emphasis on straight lines, in order to look "cool" to audiences.[1]

Reshiram and Zekrom are based on the concept of yin and yang, and as such, were given heavily contrasting designs. Reshiram resembles a white feathered wyvern with some mammalian features. It has two long crests extending from its head, along with blue eyes and a large torch-like tail. It has the ability to shoot fire from its tail to burn everything around it[2], as well as to change the weather.[3] Zekrom resembles a black, armored European dragon, with one shorter crest rather than Reshiram's dual crests, along with red eyes and a turbine-like tail. It uses this tail to generate electricity for attacks.[4] In some cases, Reshiram's tail glows red with fire, while Zekrom's glows blue with lightning.
