Paulus Cua, original name Huỳnh Tịnh Của or Huình Tịnh Của, was born in the village of Phuoc Tho in Đất Đỏ District, Bà Rịa province, Vietnam. He died in 1907 in Saigon. He was an eminent Vietnamese linguist whose contributions helped popularize the usage of quốc ngữ in its early stages, especially in the South.
Biography[edit]
As a youth, he studied at a Catholic school in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. To more quickly acquire Western research, he mastered Chinese and French. In 1861, Paulus was appointed Governor of the mission, as the director of the cultural translation company flagship project at the Sai Gon. In addition to the work of a government official, he was mindful to spend more time studying quoc ngu, the Chinese-based writing system of Vietnamese. In 1865, he replaced Petrus Ký as editor of the Gia Dinh newspaper.
