Kilmurray Church Inniskeen OS 28:8:2 (80.4, 40.2) The church of Kilmurray (Cill Mhuire)is located in the parish of Inniskeen in the Townland of Kilmurrary.
The origin of the church is unknown, however following the general suppression of religious houses and monasteries in Ireland, initiated in 1539 by Henry VIII, many churchs of similiar style to Cill Mhuire were constructed.
The map below, made during the reign of Elizabeth I (circa 1591)notes the location of Cill Mhuire within an area known then as Clancarol. With the surrounding territories other churches such as Temple Carrige, Temple Enniscaoin and Temple Muckno are also listed.
McKenna's parish history states that in 1591 the churches in Farney were burned and destroyed by the local clan, the McMahons. They were destroyed least the English crown forces should place garrisons in them.
Church Indicated on Down Survey (1591). Foundation and W gable wall of simple stone and mortar rectangular structure (17.5m NE-SW; 6m NW-SE). Low plinth (2.5m x 0.5m) abuts wall at S corner. No visible trace of entrance. Immediately
NW and parallel to this structure are traces of a second, slightly smaller, rectangular building (min.L 11m NE-SW; W 4m NW-SE). (Leslie 1929, pp.176,289)
