Babatunde Apalowo is a Nigerian filmmaker known for his debut feature film, "All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White" (2023)[3]. The film, which premiered at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, was nominated for the Panorama Audience Award[4][5], GWFF Award for Best First Feature Film[6] and it won the prestigious Teddy Award for Best Feature Film[7][8] with queer themes.  Apalowo's work explores themes of identity, belonging, and queer experiences within Nigerian society[9][10].

Early Life and Education[edit]

Babatunde Apalowo was born and raised in Ogbagi Akoko, Nigeria[11][12]. He studied Civil Engineering at the University of Benin[13][9]. He won the Homevida short script competition sponsored by the United Nations with his script titled 'Lost Children' in 2014.[14][15][16][17]

Career[edit]

Apalowo's breakthrough came with "All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White" (2023)[3][12].  The film depicts a love story between two men Bambino played by Tope Tedela and Bawa (Riyo David) navigating their feelings in a society that condemns homosexuality[18][19].  He serves as both writer and director on the project[11]. Apalowo is a frequent collaborator of Walt Taylaur having written the screenplays for Catch.er (2018) and Jolly Roger (2022)[20] which he earned a nomination for Achievement in Screenplay[21] [20]at the 2022 AMAA awards.

Style and Themes[edit]

Apalowo is emerging as a significant voice in the new wave of Nigerian cinema[10]. His work often explores themes of identity, belonging, love, and the challenges faced by marginalised communities in Nigeria[9].  His directorial style is noted for its understated visual language and sensitivity towards complex social issues[22][23]
