TAM Flight 8095 (JJ8095) was an Airbus A330 operating as a scheduled flight from Miami International Airport to São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport on May 25, 2009, which ran into severe turbulence while descending through 28,000 feet (8,500 m)[2] causing injuries to 21 occupants.[3] After the aircraft landed safely at 19:35 BRT, the injured were sent to the airport's EMS station and to various hospitals. As of May 28, 2009, three passengers remained hospitalized with injuries including fractured vertebrae, tibia, and femur.[4]
Flight details[edit]
According to passenger reports, some 30 minutes prior to landing, the fasten seat belt signs were suddenly turned on, and then the airplane made two sharp dives causing passengers that were not seated/not wearing seat belts to 'fly' and hit the cabin's ceiling.[5]
Investigation[edit]
The day after the incident, the Brazilian Air Force's CENIPA (Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center) announced the start of an investigation.[6]
Compensation[edit]
As of May 27, 2009, the airline offered to pay all medical expenses from the incident. At least one passenger declared that he will pursue legal action against TAM.[7][8]
