Michael Fabiano (born 8 May 1984) is an American operatic tenor who was born in Montclair, New Jersey and has performed in top houses throughout the world, including Teatro alla Scala, The Metropolitan Opera, English National Opera, and Teatro San Carlo.

Early Years[edit]

Michael Fabiano graduated from the University of Michigan in 2005 with a Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance. During his time in Ann Arbor he studied under renowned tenor George Shirley. In the summer immediately following graduation, he was an apprentice with the Santa Fe Opera, and in the fall of that same year he began his studies at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

Career[edit]

Mr. Fabiano made his professional stage debut at the Klagenfurt Stadttheater as Alfredo in La Traviata in 2006, and in 2007 he made his Carnegie Hall debut as Don Antonio in Dom Sébastien with the Opera Orchestra of New York and conductor Eve Queler[1]. In 2007 he also made his debut at La Scala as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, which was also the role of his debut at the Greek National Opera. Debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra as Rodolfo in La Bohème, with the Minnesota Orchestra as Alfredo in La Traviata, and with Opera New Jersey as Alfredo followed.

In more recent seasons, Michael has been seen at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia in the role of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, which was his role debut. At Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Italy, he has performed as both Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and Alfredo in La Traviata while the Duke in Rigoletto was the role of his debut with the English National Opera[2]. January of 2010 brought his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Raffaele in Stiffelo, conducted by Placido Domingo[3]. In future seasons, Michael will sing in such internationally venues as the Dresden Semperoper, the Opera National de Paris, and the Vancouver Opera, as well as a return to the English National Opera.


Awards[edit]

Mr. Fabiano was awarded a Grand Prize recipient of the 2005 Florida Grand Opera Competition Junior Division, and in 2006 he was the First Prize winner of the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation Competition and the José Carreras Prize for the Best Tenor in the Julián Gayarre Competition in Pamplona, Spain. The following year he was First Place winner in the Loren Zachary Competition, the recipient of a George London Foundation Encouragement Award, a 2007 Sarah Tucker Study Grant, and was a first-prize winner of the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, a competition that was the subject of The Audition, a recently released documentary film[4]. He is also the First Prize winner in the 2008 Opera Index Awards and was awarded the 2009 Grand Prize from the Gerda Lissner Foundation.
