Slam death metal (also known as just slam) is a subgenre of brutal death metal. The main focus of the genre is slam riffs; slow types of groove-oriented breakdowns sustained on different frets. Blast beats, while not used as often, are still occasionally used. The guitar riffs are played very low, usually around Drop B, but sometimes lower. Pinched harmonics are common in slam death metal, but guitar solos aren't. Melody is either absent or kept to very low amounts, but technicality is used. New York, Texas and Moscow are the three major slam death metal scenes. Often compared to deathcore, slam death metal doesn't use very many stop start mosh parts, but incorporates slow death grooves that can share the same feeling.
Vocals and lyrics
[edit]The vocal style of slam death metal is known as guttural; a type of death growl much deeper and "more inhuman". The sound of a guttural can range from a low gurgle to something reminiscent of a frog or a cricket. Lyrics are almost never decipherable and tend to take on the pattern of short grunts or long guttural growls with little to no enunciation. Sometimes lyrics are not used at all.
Lyrical content tends to be more extreme than standard death metal. It can contain murder, cannibalism, rape, necrophelia, gore or bodily functions. The lyrics tend to be so extreme (and often fetishize gore and bodily funtions), that they can be considered a very dark form of humour. As a result of this, slam death metal bands usually take themselves out of seriousness when compared to most other death metal.
As opposed to brutal death metal
[edit]Brutal death metal is more focused on speed, tremolo picking and blast beats, while slam death metal is focused on slams and grooves. Also, the overall sound of slam death metal is lower-pitched, slower, and less complex than brutal death metal.
