Pedro Costa is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist, and music producer from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, now living in North Bay. He is best known in Poland where he has received national airplay. Costa has had two songs in the top 50 Polish singles chart.

History[edit]

Early Years[edit]

Pedro Costa, of Portuguese descent, grew up surrounded by Fado, Pimba and Mainstream Top 40, and discovered additional influences on his own such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin. Costa began exploring his talents in high school, performing regularly with choirs and at school functions. By the end of high school he was member of the very popular male quartet "4 Vocal FX". The group performed at many community events and was immortalized in a TV commercial for a local car dealership. At this time Pedro was also the lead singer for the local battle of the bands winning hard rock group "My Pet Fish Gus" and for the Portuguese band "Malta Nova". In collaboration with, "My Pet Fish Gus" guitarist, and high school friend, Jayk Gaudet he began exploring some of the songwriting themes and styles that are still very characteristic today. Unfortunately due to creative differences the band split up. Pedro briefly assembled a new band called "21 Guns". The members were primarily focused on being a bar/cover band which didn't appeal to Pedro's aspirations for original music.

Solo Projects[edit]

Driven by his passion for songwriting Pedro's solo recording debut came in 2008 with the portuguese single "A beira da estrada". This was the followed by his first Alternative Rock EP The Light. An uplifting song about self discovery recorded in 2009, generated Pedro's biggest success to date. Discovered online by Polish radio producer and personality Piotr Baron the song went on to gain notoriety as the most successful song by a foreign independent artist in the last 30 years of Poland's singles chart. The Light reached a peek position of 11th on May 5th, 2009 (see Charts). The Light was also played nationally in Portugal by Rádio Renascença.[1] Some success also came in Costa's native Canada. In 2010 "Fooled Again?" was discovered by CBC radio producer Amanda Putz and featured on CBC Radio 1 show Bandwidth. The track also made the CBC radio 3 track of the day. "A serious part-time activity for him... Well, that part-time activity is not doing too bad..." - Amanda Putz[2]

His music crosses many genres, making him difficult to categorize. Some of his music and vocals have been compared to R.E.M. and Michael Stipe. Whereas in the song "Hope" the music and voice have been compared to folk singers like John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot

After several other singles releases and collaborative efforts his first full length album "Discovery" was released March 2011.
