Dr. Noreen Khan-Mayberry is a Space Toxicologist for the National Aeronautics & Space Administration [1]. She is an American Scientist. Dr. Khan-Mayberry served as the first female and first person of color to work as a NASA Space Toxicologist. The Space Toxicology Office is located at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
Education[edit]
Dr. Khan-Mayberry received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana. She then went on to earn her Master of Science degree in Biology from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. Dr. Khan-Mayberry received her PhD in Environmental Toxicology from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas.
NASA career[edit]
Dr. Khan-Mayberry has worked at NASA since she was recruited in 2004. Dr. Khan-Mayberry's professional work supports all manned spaceflight programs including the Space Shuttle program and International Space Station program. In her role as Space Toxicologist, Dr. Khan-Mayberry conducts toxicological assessments of system and payload materials. These toxicity assessments are necessary to aid in determining potential astronaut crew exposure to toxic hazards inherently found in spacecraft. She has set air quality and water quality standards for spacecraft and supported verification of compliance with those standards through environmental monitoring [2][3][4][5]. She along with other space toxicologists control the toxicological risks posed by any chemical or compound that could enter a human-rated spacecraft. Dr. Khan-Mayberry has served as the United States chair of the International Air Quality Working Group. Dr. Khan-Mayberry has also managed the Advanced Environmental Health Project, which includes the Lunar Dust Toxicity Research Project, charged with setting a permissible exposure limit for crew exposure to respirable lunar particles Dr. Khan-Mayberry has served as the technical manager of the Lunar Airborne Dust Toxicity Assessment Group (LADTAG) and serves as a committee member. Dr. Khan-Mayberry has served as a working participant on numerous boards and working groups at NASA providing technical expertise in space toxicology and lunar dust toxicity. Dr. Khan-Mayberry has made presentations on mineral dust and mineral dust simulants at various international scientific conferences [6].
Scientific Expertise[edit]
Dr. Khan-Mayberry is a subject matter expert and professional space toxicologist regarding the acute and chronic toxicological health effects of toxicants and toxins on human beings during spaceflight and space operations [7]. She is also a microbiologist and subject matter expert of airborne mycotoxins and aerotoxic syndrome. Dr. Khan-Mayberry’s toxicology expertise also extends to food toxicology and nutrition. Dr. Khan-Mayberry was honored as a global leader in science at the Women as Global Leaders conference [8].
History Maker[edit]
Dr. Khan-Mayberry served as the lead author of first book chapter on Space Toxicology ever featured in in the international textbook, General & Applied Toxicology[9]. This book chapter introduced Space Toxicology as a sub-specialty of the study of Toxicology. Dr. Khan-Mayberry is the first woman and first person of color to serve as a NASA Space Toxicologist.
Personal[edit]
"Dr. Noreen" has a passion for food toxicity issues and their effect on human health. She advises on nutrition and the role it plays in altering our body's ability to function and heal". Dr. Noreen is a public speaker educating the public about avoiding and reducing exposures to toxins and toxicants in the environment and in foods we consume. Dr. Noreen is a green technologies expert and uses this expertise to try to reduce the amount of environmental abuse that is unknowingly levied upon the general public. Her mission includes protecting the less fortunate from being exposed to toxic hazards that affect their long term health and quality of life. She also strives to translate the language of science for non-scientists in order to educate and inform the public of critical issues that affect their health and quality of life. Dr. Noreen has been featured on talk radio as a guest expert and she is an activer public speaker that has spoken internationally. Her book "Talking Toxicology" is an essential guide that provides an easy to understand breakdown of the science of toxicology and how to recognize and reduce toxic exposures.
