Hello, welcome to your Counter Vandalism Unit Academy page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your academy page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working). Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Vandalism as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

Lesson 1 (Good Faith and Vandalism) Y

Twinkle One of the best anti-vandalism tools is Twinkle, and is what I recommend all my students use for anti-vandalism work. It is important to recognise the difference between a vandalism edit and a good faith edit, especially because Twinkle gives you the option of labelling edits you revert as such. One is theoretical and the other one is practical. Each one will contain 50 marks and the total is 100. Now here's you test. 1.) What is Good Faith and Vandalism. Give their definition and a short description. Tell me the difference between Good Faith and Vandalism. (this question contains 20 marks. It has 5 questions in it. If you give right answer youl get full 20) A:-A good faith edit is an edit intended to help and improve Wikipedia, although it may be unconstructive or somewhat disruptive. Vandalism is intended to disrupt Wikipedia intentionally, often through the use of adding profanities or deliberately making factual errors. The underlying difference between the two that although both may be somewhat disruptive, a good faith edit was not made to intentionally disrupt Wikipedia, while vandalism is. As such, test edits, unintentionally making template errors, not following general editing guidelines (such as WP:NOR or WP:NPOV) while the editor was trying to improve the article is not vandalism but good faith edits. Y Yes. 2/2 Total obtained mark for Question 2 is 8/10 3.) Suppose User:Ghosh10 is vandalizing Wikipedia. 3a.) How'll you spot Ghosh10's vandalism? A:-I would usually use Lupin's Antivandal tool to detect vandalism. Y Yeah. Okay you can use tools to detect vandalism. 5/5 3b.) What will you do to respond his Vandalism? A:-I would use Twinkle to revert his vandalism and warn him using the appropriate {{uw-vandalism}} template. If the user has not received a warning, I will warn him with the level 2 template. If the editor has already been warned and has sufficient time to read the warning, I will elevate the warning. If the editor has already received a level 4 template and has already had enough time to read the template, I will report him at WP:ANI. Y No, if the user hasn't received a warning you will not warn him with the level 2 template. You will warn that user with level 1. Others are right. 4/5 Total obtained mark for Question 3 is 9/10 4.) Suppose User:Lionel Messi is a newcomer and making Good edits. He created Jackvill 77. You fix the format issues on the page and you have reverted his edit on Lionel Messi. A few minutes later, you get a nasty note on your talk page which states that you have caused him an edit conflict by performing your few minor corrections. He was unaware of how to correct an edit conflict, and therefore lost everything he was trying to do also he thinks that his edit at Messi page was absolutely right but you know that his edit was right not suitable for Wiki. He takes this to WP:ANI that you are not a good user, you should be blocked............ as he lost many information due that conflict 4a.) Will you still assume good faith after this situation and why? A:-Despite my anger about the situation, I will still assume good faith as he was unaware of Wikipedia policies and he tried to make useful contributions to Wikipedia. Y Yes, you'll still assume good-faith. 5/5 4b.) How'll you handle this situation? A:-I will first respond at WP:ANI explaining the situation. Then I will leave a message on his talk page explaining that I did not mean to make you lose your edits as no one could have forseen that I was editing at the same time as the editor. I will explain why his edit on Lionel Messi was incorrect (I'm assuming he tried to insert information about himself) as the article describes the footballer and he should place information about himself on his userpage. I will then explain how he should deal with edit conflicts. I will apologize anyways for his loss of information and tell him that other Wikipedia contributors can add the information if he does not wish to. If he, however, persists in calling me a bad user, I will probably not respond and let other users deal with the matter. Y Brilliant. Lesson 2 (Warning and reporting) Y

Warning and reporting As you know, we are using Twinke, which is very useful for warning users. When you use Twinkle to warn a user, you have a number of options to choose from: you can select the kind of warning (for different offences), and the level of warning (from 1 to 4, for increasing severity). Y 2/2 2j.) {{subst:uw-move}}:-When a user engages in page-move vandalism (moving pages to inappropriate names, possibly vulgarities or obscenities). Y Also moving without any discussion. 2/2 3.) Now give 10 more examples of single level warning template and multi-level warning templates and write why and when they should be used.(You should not write different levels of the same warning. Exclude the 10 warnings given up) 3a.) {{subst:uw-npov}} When a user inserts biased content into an article. Such actions is not allowed as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and its aim is to provide unbiased information. Y 2/2 3b.) {{subst:uw-attack}} When a user personally attacks another user. Such actions is not allowed as users are expected to remain civil in conversations and be respectful of other users. Y 2/2 3c.) {{subst:uw-username}} When a user's username might be in violation of the username policy, such as when it represents a company or contains vulgarities. Y 2/2 3d.) {{subst:uw-forum}} When a user treats a talk page like a forum. The talk page is meant to facilitate discussions on how to improve the article, not to talk about the general topic itself. Users should respect other's edits and not revert them just because it was created by themselves. Edit-warring is not allowed as it does not help to solve issues. Editors are expected to discuss about the matter amicably. How'll you handle a situation of WP:3RR? What are the exemptions of 3RR? A:-3RR is a policy on edit-warring that indicates that editors should not revert an edit that they do not agree with more than 3 times in one day. However, gaming the system by reverting just after the time period is not allowed and stopping only after the 3rd revert is also considered bad practice. I will warn users with {{subst:uw-3rr}}. If they persist, I will report them to WP:AN3. Reverting vandalism, BLP issues, or legal violations are exempt from this. Y You haven't answered the last question What are the exemptions of 3RR?. Lesson 3 (Protection) Y

Protection Protecting can be used to prevent and deal with vandalism. Only anadministrator can protect however, anyone can or request protection. Please read WP:PROTECT. Hi, I have read the page. A:- Protection is a feature that can be applied to pages to prevent certain user groups from editing the pages, usually implemented in high-risk pages that can cause widespread damage to the site (eg. highly used templates) or high-visibility ones (main page, important articles such as Steve Jobs). Y 2/2 Semi-protection :- Allows only users with autoconfirmed or confirmed status or higher to edit (IPs and new accounts cannot edit) Y 2/2 Creation protection :- Allows only administrators to create a certain page. Y I'm giving you full marks here. But remember create protection isn't only for sysops. An admin can set the create protection level for a page [create=autoconfirmed] Move protection :- Allows only administrators to move a page. A:- A page should be semi-protected if it is a high-visibility pages (such as Bill Gates) which is especially prone to vandalism since many users view it and vandals understand that vandalism on these pages do the most impact or if the topic is highly controversial and is subject to continuous edit warring. Y Yeah. 2/2 3b.) When an admin should use Upload Protection? A:- When the image is prone to vandalism or in cases of high-use images (such as File:Example.jpg). Y Missed one thing. "Files subject to a dispute between editors". But you are right. 2/2 3c.) When Create protection is needed? A:- When a page is created many times but deleted, often due to vandalism or search terms of the sidebar (eg. random article). Y Good. 2/2 3d.) In what time a Full Protection will be appropriate? A:- It would be appropriate when the page is undergoing constant edit wars or vandalism by autoconfirmed/confirmed users. Y Great. 2/2 3e.) When you should request for a Move protection? A:- When the page is subject to page-move vandalism or if there is a discussion about moving the page so that users do not prematurely move the page before consensus if reached. Y Some parts you missed. Such as highly visible page is move protected, cause it has no reason to be moved. But all right. 2/2 Y So here you get 10/10 4a.) How many levels are there for Pending Protection? What are they? A:- There are 2 levels. The first level allows autoconfirmed users and higher to edit a page without needing their edits to be reviewed by a reviewer. The second level requires all users except reviewers and administrators to have their edits reviewed before going live. However the second level is not currently used. Y Good. 2/2 4b.) What happens if a page is pending protected? A:- Certain users need to have their reviews reviewed by a reviewer before going live. Y 4/4 4c.) When it's appropriate to request a pending protection? A:- When the page is subject to vandalism or BLP issues but not semi-protected or protected to encourage editing by good-faith editors. Y. Yeah right. A:- Permanent protection is full protection except that administrators cannot remove the protection. Tell me in your own word. When this kind of protection should be used? A:- Cascading protection is protection where the page itself is protected as well as all other pages that is used by that page. It should be used to prevent the vandalism of certain important pages by vandalising other pages that the page uses. Y Good. 5/5 7.) What's office action? Tell me everything you know. A:- Office protection is pages protected by the Wikimedia foundation often because of certain legal issues. Such pages should never be unprotected by an administrator without consent from the Wikimedia foundation. Y Absolutely right. 5/5 8.) How'll you propose edit or modify a fully protected page? A:- I will post an edit request on its talk page. Y I would love that if you posted the template. But anyway. 5/5 9.) When do you think your user talk page needs to be semi protected? If your talk page is semi protected what'll you do for those users who're not auto-confirmed? A:- When it is being vandalised by a lot of IP and new user vandals. I may direct them to another user's talk page and ask them to forward the query to me. Y Yeah. But I think there's flaw here. You can do that if you want. But that's not a good way of communicating.
