The Riso Family The name Riso is derived from Risus, latin for laughter and teasing. The origin of the surname Riso may have been shortened from Oderisio, the name of the count of the Marsi and the abbot of Montecassino who may have lived from 1173 to 1340 ad. Two abbots with the name Oderisius are said to have been burried behind a great stone in the facade of the abbey san giovanni. The surname Riso may have also been changed from the name Piso from the gens Calpurnia, due to the fact that the piso family had to hide from Roman Emperors on numerous occations. Giovanni Antonio Riso, a neapolitan nobleman, was appointed Giustiziere d'Abruzzi, Executioner of Abruzzi by the king of Naples. Cardinal Riso of the Roman Catholic Church was made cardinal priest of S.Lorenzo in 1088 ad. He helped Abbot Hugo make designs for the monastery of S.Maria de Valle. He attended the Counsil of Guastalla in 1106 ad. He travelled through France in 1107 ad. to Bèze, Langres and Valence. On April 14th 1111ad. he negotiated with emperor Heinrich V to release the pope and other Roman clergymen from captivity. This was called the Ponte Mammolo agreement. He was elected Archbishop of Bari in April of 1112ad. Then in 1118ad., Cardinal Riso was mysteriously assasinated.
