The Green Earth Appeal is an international Nonprofit Organization based in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, specialising in poverty reduction by providing Agroforestry training, nursery building and the provision of trees to communities across Africa, Asia and South America.[1]

History of Organisation[edit]

Developed as part of Alibaba.com’s Global Startup Challenge [2], it was one of seven businesses launched on the opening day of the Global Entrepreneurship Week ,16th November 2009, at the British Library in London.

The event was attended by Peter Jones (entrepreneur) (of BBCs Dragons Den fame), Simon Jack, Carl Schramm the Chief Executive of the Kauffman Foundation, Emma Harrison (entrepreneur) the founder A4E and Jim O'Neill (economist) the Head of Global Economic Research at Goldman Sachs [3]

On 7th December 2009 The Green Earth Appeal became one of only 48 tree planting partners of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Billion Tree Campaign, with their announcement, “On the opening day of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, we are happy to welcome The Green Earth Appeal as a partner to the Billion Tree Campaign. Trees are a legacy for future generations”.

The Billion Tree Campaign was inspired by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai. When an executive in the United States told Professor Maathai their corporation was planning to plant a million trees, her response was: “That’s great, but what we really need is to plant a billion trees.” The campaign is carried out under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Organisation Goals[edit]

In addition to its domestic growth, The Paper Cup Company has built up a solid European customer base in France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Poland, Moldova, Greece and Italy, as well as providing paper cups to nations further afield including Egypt, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

The company’s base in China started manufacturing hot drinks paper cups in most of the common sizes in 2007 and has since diversified into producing cups for cold drinks. These are distributed across the world from the Port of Ningbo, one of the busiest maritime hubs in mainland China.
