Ukraine Is Not a Brothel is a 2013 Australian film directed by Kitty Green. The film debuted (screening out of competition) at the 70th Venice International Film Festival.[1]

Synopsis[edit]

This documentary is a journey into the FEMEN (Фемен) movement, feminist protest group of Ukrainian origin.

Cast[edit]

the 4 principal women of FEMEN (Фемен):

Plot[edit]

The film is a documentary on the activities of FEMEN, a Ukrainian feminist movement known for topless protests. The filmmaker Kitty Green followed the activists for a year, documenting the protests and the various complaints and arrests suffered, [2] therefore undertook, in four months, the interviews with the four activists who form the backbone of the film.[3]

The documentary reveals how to actually drive the group of FEMEN is a man, Viktor Svyatskiy, shown as a manipulator of all the protests and, in essence, commander of the females.[2][1][4]

The activists of FEMEN have participated in the promotion of the documentary, saying that the situation described, with the leadership of Viktor, is actually part of the past, because the man was kicked out of the movement in 2012[1][5]

Production[edit]

The documentary was filmed in Ukraine, Belarus and Turkey.[6]

Reception[edit]

The film was screened out of competition at the 70th Venice International Film Festival of Venice.[1] At the photocall of the festival activists presented themselves, as usual in their protests, topless[7]

Critical Reception[edit]

According to the newspaper Libération, the documentary reveals the role of Viktor Sviatsky in organizing the feminist movement.[8].
