Only those with wiki articles?

Hi , why do you provide an external link option if you only accept those with wiki articles? Also lots of other surnames Don't.

Two on o'Connor?

Tons on here.

Hello IP, that's an understandable question. Generally speaking, the relevant guideline is WP:DDD (although name lists aren't technically disambiguation pages in the purest sense of the word, they do count as such). When you see a redlink in a disambiguation list, usually one of three things is the case:
  1. It was added in good faith by an editor who either had planned to create a corresponding article or wanted to make others aware of the possibility;
  2. The article it used to lead to was removed through one of our deletion processes;
  3. Some chum thought it would be just the funniest thing in the world if they added themselves to the list with some made up or joke credentials.
Since this aspect of the WP:DDD guideline isn't crucially important relative to, say, removing slander or copyright violations, or smoking out undisclosed paid editors, people don't normally go around and systematically clean these up, which is why you were able to find your examples quite easily. However, inserting a link to an external site, even if it's just IMDb, in place of a regular bluelink to an article is problematic insofar that it will be confusing to a reader who expects a Wikipedia article. There's also a possibility of editors who, unlike you, don't have good intentions inserting spam links. Hope I was able to answer your question! AngryHarpytalk 10:15, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Template warning system guide

Hi AngryHarpy, I saw the message that you left on my talk page regarding template warnings when reverting edits made by others. While I understand that both Twinkle and RedWarn are capable of warning after making reverts, I'm simply not sure when to use the warning templates and if I need to check a person's talk page for a previous warning before issuing it, or if that's done automatically within the RedWarn/Twinkle system. Thank you for the help!

SquirrelCrown (talk) 22:17, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi SquirrelCrown, thanks for reaching out! First of all, you may already know this, but Special:RecentChanges allows you to automatically filter incoming edits; if you click into the field right above the "Live updates" button, you'll find the two sections "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions". If you haven't so far, it's worth playing around with these.
One reason I'm (possibly needlessly) explaining these options is because we have an oft-invoked essay entitled Don't template the regulars. Now, I personally don't care so much, but there are many others who do, and filtering your edits with the above method will help you step around the majority of good faith edits, including the ones whose purpose you may not yet fully understand.
However, to get back to the core of your question: Yes, both RedWarn and Twinkle do check for previous messages, you don't have to do so yourself. Also, while Twinkle is vastly more capable overall, I think RedWarn is very beginner-friendly and useful in teaching you more about the forms disruptive editing can take (not just run-of-the-mill infantile vandalism, but also things like link spamming). Generally speaking, if you're not sure whether or not an edit was actually done in bad faith, it's safer to leave the editor in question a warning for disruptive editing, rather than outright vandalism, as that word has a rather strict definition around here, and accusing people of committing it without cause is frowned upon pretty heavily.
Another habit I would recommend you adopt is to always check the other contributions of an editor you're intending to revert – either to try and find out more about what they are wanting to do, or to see whether they have done unreverted damage elsewhere. There's also the Counter-Vandalism Unit Academy, which I've never gone through so I'm prone to forgetting it exists, but you might want to consider taking a look at it. This got lengthy, but you seem to be a native speaker, so I thought I'd be fine to go a little nuts. Have a good one, and feel free to get back with any additional questions! Vishtaspa

I know it looks strange, but I'm not undoing your edit here, but the 2 edits prior. The username attack on myself I suspect is the same editor with a sock account. I've blocked them both. -- Longhair\talk 07:08, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Longhair, oh yeah, I figured as much. Thanks for the note anyway! AngryHarpytalk 07:09, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

why was the External link on the benefits of Home tutoring removed.

Hi,

I would like to know from you why the external link on the benefits of home tuition was removed. Let me get clarity on that. I attach the link for your reference. https://newbrightacademy.com/tuition-class/ Benefits of Home tuition

Thanks, Subrato — Preceding unsigned comment added by Subratocadd (talkcontribs) 12:24, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello Subratocadd, I reverted your addition in accordance with our external links guidelines, specifically WP:ELNO. We're dealing with lots of people indisciminately adding links to personal websites or websites of organizations they otherwise have a conflict of interest with; this counts as WP:SPAM. Of course, I have no way of telling what motivated you to add the above URL to articles, it's perfectly conceivable that you had good intentions, but our rules on external links are strict. I should also mention that even in a purely merit-based analysis, the linked text wouldn't be considered a valuable supplement to articles. AngryHarpytalk 12:00, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

What type of articles should be on Wikipedia?

I’ve been thinking with this account, what type of articles I should create. I Wish to write thing such as articles on specific anime characters. However, I want to ask what level of importance of characters or the franchise itself is good for Wikipedia. Sorry to bother you, please reply soon. Mystic880 (talk) 05:11, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Mystic880, I'm not too familiar with the notability criteria for fictional characters myself, but generally speaking, I can point you to our WikiProject Anime and manga for further assistance and, possibly, ideas. Seeing how you're a new user, I would also recommend you publish your first articles through our Articles for creation program; that way, an experienced user will provide you with guidance regarding any possible shortcomings they might have, ensuring that they are sufficiently policy-compliant to be turned into articles. AngryHarpytalk 05:25, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Response to above

I can confirm that the User AngryHarpy is indeed NOT afraid of reality but in fact prefers Wikipedia to be un-biased and truthful. DamienSwanntalk 10:02, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

I'd say that's a fair way to put it, I do have such a preference ;) AngryHarpytalk 09:06, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
Damien Swann – On an unrelated note, I'm assuming the BST you retroactively changed in your signature above stands for British Summer Time; however, I have to ask you to please leave the original UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) label intact, as changing it can cause conflicts with archiving bots. AngryHarpytalk 10:55, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
AngryHarpy - Thanks for the warning, I corrected my timezone due to clashes with the time as my time above is BST but I do no know the time difference between me and you. (1204BST, if you can correct to UDT, that would be great =)) DamienSwanntalk 12:04, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
Damien Swann – I'm on Central European Summer Time, but that's not really the point, as editors from all around the world use UTC to sign their comments so that the timestamps are comparable relative to one another. Just type the four tildes (~~~~) and don't worry about it. AngryHarpytalk 11:13, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Confused

Hi Harpy, could you please check the latest change to Alpha Conde? I will include the link here. Someone changed 'resorted in' to 'retorted with' and when I checked and proof read this change, neither made full sense to me (resorted made most but context was confusing), thanks for reading this. DamienSwanntalk 07:04, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello Damien, to the best of my knowledge, "resorted in" is never the correct form; if anything, it should have been "resorted to". On the other hand, "retorted with" does make more sense here (see the examples and definitions on the wiktionary page), but I personally would have chosen "responded with" as the most straight-forward phrasing. AngryHarpytalk 07:47, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Also, please add </small> to the end of your signature so the effect doesn't bleed into the following comments (see this version). AngryHarpytalk 07:51, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
I apologise for the code issue with my signature, it is now sorted =) Also thank you for informing me of your choice but I think, unless there are objections, I will leave the page as it is. If others view it as an issue, they may change it but I d not wish to cause any troubles. DamienSwann 08:24, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
It's currently a very high-profile page either way; in cases like this, if you aren't certain about a change, it's perfectly appropriate and even recommendable to leave it to other editors. AngryHarpytalk 08:30, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

User FormulaToby

The User [FormulaToby] vandalised a page so I checked his past edits and came across this [[1]] and I am not sure what to think of this. Please be warned, he only has a talk page and joined within the hour. DamienSwann 08:45, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Draft:Harold Redshaw is an obvious WP:HOAX. It could be speedily deleted as a G3, but since it was only posted to draft space, there's not much urgency. AngryHarpytalk 08:51, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Broken Page

There is a page that has a broken box. I tried reverting but the version I reverted to is also broken (didn register the change), please can you give advice on this situation? The file is within this message to avoid others looking at it. Youll find it... DamienSwann 10:31, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Rejected Edits

Edits to the page below were rejected with a note that the edits were not constructive. I apologize but I am not sure I understand how best to proceed. In this particular case, the names of Jonathan Little's parents are incorrect and should be updated. What is the best way to update this information?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Little

Thank you for the assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doanebrian (talkcontribs) 23:14, 9 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello Doanebrian, I've gone ahead and removed his parents' names outright, as both the original statement and your change were unsourced (and also, that information isn't too important to the article in the first place). It should only be re-added if a sufficiently reliable source for it can be found. AngryHarpytalk 04:38, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Not fully aware of all the guidelines on Wiki

I was going through recent changes and saw someone had added an article to one of the pages, hidden inside this message, about BLM and the article focus' actions towards it, do I leave this as is or revert? I dont know what to do for stuff like this... DamienSwann 06:48, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

@Damien Swann, this seems to have been translated from another language, given that the citation templates aren't in English. As always with high-profile pages, and especially in cases like this where the edit is decidedly not vandalism, the best option is to leave it to the page watchers. I would also suggest that perhaps you should check out some of our resources on anti vandalism work, such as the Counter-Vandalism Unit academy. I'm happy to help, but it's getting to be a bit much recently. AngryHarpytalk 06:58, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Energy medicine

A late thanks for your welcome message in my talk page on the 6th July 2021. I was wondering, do you mind having a quick look at this conversation and possibly provide some advice on how to move forward? Thank you Gitz6666 (talk) 10:01, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello Gitz, thank you for reaching out. Wikipedia editors of course have plenty justification for being consistently hawkish with regards to anything pseudoscience, as failing to do so would invariably cause those pages to be overrun by quacks. This is no small issue, either – RationalWiki's got a pretty informative write-up on what happened when our soi-disant doom thought it would be wise to open themselves up to them. I believe it is fair to say that much of the not necessarily all that friendly energy you've been confronted with over there, if you'll pardon the pun, is informed by horrorstories such as those, and while assuming good faith is and always will be one of our core tenets, I do absolutely understand where those editors are coming from. To put it simply, keeping charlatans off our project is exhausting, and sometimes there can be casualties. However, while I don't consider myself qualified to pass any definitive judgment on this specific question, I personally see no reason to doubt your good intentions.
As for your question on how to proceed, I noticed that another editor just now replied to your most recent message, so this may quickly clear itself up after all. For future reference, the English Wikipedia's process for requesting outside input concerning disputes is WP:RFC, but I'm sure that won't be necessary in this case. AngryHarpytalk 11:15, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the interesting insights, I didn't know about Citizendium and their take on alternative medicine. I'm quite a scientifically-minded kind of person and I was a bit surprised by the way they misunderstood my point of view. My point was quite trivial, really, and I agree with you - there will be no need for RfC. Gitz6666 (talk) 14:01, 12 September 2021 (UTC)

Donkey12234, you can get to the sandbox by clicking this link, though I should warn you that further unconstructive edits there won't be looked on kindly. As of right now, all that has happened is that your edits have been disallowed by an edit filter, but if you continue this behaviour, you will be blocked indefinitely. I'm sorry I made you cry, but we can't allow people to vandalize articles. AngryHarpytalk 07:53, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
hey angryharpy, i read your statement on the talk page of dan petrescu and i can confirm it to be true. the page regarding him still says he is a living person, which needs to be changed. however, i know not about editing wiki articles, so i messaged you to do so. Kingpin25zxc (talk) 12:13, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi Kingpin25zxc, first of all, thank you for the barnstar! Unfortunately, I'm a little confused about how to help you; Dan Petrescu is a 53-year-old football coach, while the Dan Petrescu that died in the plane crash was, according to the BBC article you linked on the talk page, a 68-year-old billionnaire. They're very clearly different people who just so happen to share the same name, and since we don't have an article on the billionnaire, I don't see that there's anything to update. AngryHarpytalk 12:20, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

A Thank you

User:AngryHarpy The page Attack on Titan (TV series) happened to be on my watchlist due to past vandalism, I regularly update it so after checking previous edits i saw you undo an edit made by an amateur editor who wrote "It is the best anime ever made", So I'm taking this time to Thank you for undoing it. Hello @DominicReymysterio619, from what I can see in your contributions, you do already seem to know how to edit articles. However, I also noticed that you were recently warned about edit-warring – is your question related to the instructions you received in that notice? I can further explain some of that stuff if you think it would be helpful, but you'll have to be a little more specific :) AngryHarpytalk 19:51, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Stop removing citations from battles you didn’t participate in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gllsanman2 (talkcontribs) 03:32, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Gilsanman2, I can only assume you're referring to these, which I removed, explicitly per the edit summary I left, because we don't place them next to (or before??) section headers. Since I'm on a crappy motel wifi right now, I won't bother to look up the specific MOS guideline on that, but you can probably trust me here. Also, while we're at it and without having been able to review any of those videos, don't OR and don't SYNTH. Nice day and all that, thanks. AngryHarpytalk 05:43, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, you're probably right. I'm assuming your IP address is either shared with multiple people or was assigned to you after someone else used it to make the edits that the messages on your talk page are referring to. If you want to avoid this happening in the future, you can just create your own account to edit from. Hope this helps! AngryHarpytalk 07:55, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello @Aliciaa, I merely defined the DEFAULTSORT key of this person with a semi-automated tool. This is something I do for a lot of people, and on a daily basis – so no, I don't happen to know her personally.
If you intend to add information to the article obtained from acquaintances of the subject, please be sure you're fully familiar with our policies on verifiability and biographies of living people (and, maybe in this case most relevantly, WP:SELFPUB, which defines the usability criteria of social media sources). If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. AngryHarpytalk 11:13, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

@Mama1938, please stop spamming random talk pages, it's disruptive. You contest the speedy deletion on the article's talk page, that's all you have to do. Additionally, if the article is deleted, you can always try to take one of the four (!) drafts of it through AfC, which is the route you should've taken in the first place -- Draft:Sad Person (Music producer), Draft:Sad Person, Draft:Kholmat Odilov, Draft:Odilov, Kholmat. Also, your signature is incorrect, as your name is Mama1938, not Robotkaka2020. AngryHarpytalk 18:04, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
  • Wikipedia cannot be created without auto-confirmation, only recently I was able to create an article about this person, and they are trying to delete it, although there are sources there, only in Russian. --Robotkaka20 (talk) 18:08, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
@Mama1938, an administrator will review the request before deciding on whether to act on it or not, I suggest you simply wait for that to happen. Just now, two other users with very few edits -- Small.Baby.Chek and Papa2004 -- edited the article in rapid succession. Do you know them? AngryHarpytalk 18:14, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
