Concern over username FeygeleGoy[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: names like yours are usually associated with vandals. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Thank you. Ipatrol (talk) 03:11, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Saw that last night, but was too tired to address this coherently. I'm writing you an email now. FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ 14:57, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you had a good Shabbos, and will be able to read my email, and respond to me about your concern over my username, either on my talk page, or through email. In addition, I believe a review of my contributions would show no vandalism over the time I've been a member of Wikipedia, since August of 2008 2007.
Please let me hear back from you as to whether this alleviates your concerns, or if you need to discuss further. Thank you. FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ 00:32, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am formally asking you to change your username at this point. This can be done simply by filing a request at WP:CHU. I do believe that you are here to positively contribute, however, names with patently offensive connotations are discouraged as per WP:USERNAME. Please change your username ot this will enter the standard dispute resolution process, Thank You.--Ipatrol (talk) 01:31, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If I don't know what the issue with the name is, I can't be reasonably informed! Is my name vandalism, or offensive? I've been told one first, now another. Please give me details before you take this process to a further step. FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ 01:37, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
FeygeleGoy, I don't see the need to actively respond to a request to change your username if you really like the name and think it can survive the dispute resolution process. I will go out on a limb and guess that there are plenty of other editors on Wikipedia who don't have a problem with it, most likely an overwhelming majority. In light of your positive contributions to the encyclopedia, you appear to me to have a good case. If I were in your position, I'd stick it out and see if the complaining editor wants to go to the mat with this. Binksternet (talk) 01:45, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Binksternet, for the good words. I really appreciate it. It's sort of my personal brand, and is meant to be a playful explanation of being gay, interested and minimally observant in Judaism (though I haven't committed to converting), and enjoying studying Yiddish. I know that both "Feygele" and "Goy" can be viewed as offensive in Yiddish, but I understand that "Feygele" is only offensive because it means "gay". "Goy" is usually neutral, though I know it can be viewed as impolite, at least when used in Yinglish. But the name is meant to spark interest or curiosity into Yiddish.
If there is a good case that the "goy" part of my name is offensive, I could choose something like "FeygelePolyak", which would be Yiddish for gay Pole, but it wouldn't guarantee that the issue isn't the "Feygele" part, which, English or Yiddish, runs the risk of offending on that part. FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ 01:57, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And Ipatrol, I hope this clears up the issue better. I don't take this nickname to offend, and if I took it for purposes of vandalism, I'd be a very ineffective vandal, if you look at my tiny, but non-disruptive, contributions! I hope there's no more of a serious issue? FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ 02:04, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In english, "feygele" is connected to the strongly offensive word "faggot." This simple fact can make staying cool during a dispute quite hard. Wikipedia has at least a few people in each culture; what's funny to you can be patently offensive to someone else. That is the reason I ask for a change in username to something without offensive connotations,--Ipatrol (talk) 05:16, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ipatrol, play your trump card or stop bothering this guy. Binksternet (talk) 05:24, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I would have posted a reply half-an-hour-ago, but my browser ate my homework.  :)

I really don’t want to ignore any issue that might exist, so I agree that we should try to talk it out. If I can be convinced that the word "feygele" is mostly viewed as an offensive, anti-gay term, by Jews who know it, regardless of the context, then I will have to change it. I don’t want to wear, as a sign of pride, terms which denigrate gays and Jews. However, the reason for the offensiveness of the word is not clear to me. Is "feygele" offensive because it denigrates gays? Or is it offensive because it calls someone gay, which has traditionally considered negative? Or, put another way, is "feygele" commonly recognized as derogatory, and should be avoided, or is the meaning pretty much recognized as simply "gay", with proud or derogatory connotations added according to a speaker's own opinion of "feygelakh"?

I have recognized that "feygele" is being a potentially charged term, but in part because Yiddish only had one word for "gay", and the association has historically been necessarily offensive. However, I’ve heard many Jews use "feygele" in a positive or affectionate way more often than I’ve heard it in a derogatory or hateful way. In fact, Lorin Sklamberg, the lead singer and accordionist of the Klezmatics, and a gay man, has used "feygele" in gay contexts, without it being derogatory. Also, I’ve heard of Jewish LGBT film festivals using “feygele” in a positive way.

I feel that these words, “feygele” and “goy”, are somewhat risqué, but not to the point of being hateful language to others. They need to be said, not hidden away as hateful terms. Perhaps, if there can’t be any agreement between us, the best ones to advise on this matter would be gay Jews, and see if they find “feygele” to be a hateful term, or if they sympathize with and embrace it?

Also, I’m at a loss for what to do if I’m forced to change my username. What if I give in and change it to something like “PoylisherGoy”, and someone takes offense that it contains the word “goy”? Or if I convert to Judaism, and use “ger” in a username, and someone takes offense at a username that distinguishes between converts and non-converts?

I'm trimming all the headers back to the first one, as this discussion is about one issue. Foreign words in English have been seen to be offensive upon occasion (see Peter Schmuck's attempt to put his name on a vanity plate in California) but I think it's all in the mind of the beholder. Some people see more smut, and attempt to censor it for the benefit of the world. Speaking for the world (heh heh), I don't need the censoring. Hey, I like the humorous wink your name brings. Count on me to be a supporting voice of reason if Ipatrol pushes this issue to a formal review. Binksternet (talk) 15:41, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This will be the last request I will make. I plead with you to change your username. If people know what the translation (or pseudo-translation) of a word is, it can be taken very offensively, the sheer fact that one user (me) complained is case-in-point. Your e-mail schpeal did not help with the dispute resolution process. Exceptions for personal reasons or stories are not made on Wikipedia: if you violate policy, you will be treated like everyone else who does. The next step in the process of dispute resolution for usernames is Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Usernames and I will likely file for a request for comment if your username is not changed. A request for comment is a process where the dispute (at WP:RFCN, usernames) are placed on a page for 30 days for other users to comment on it.--Ipatrol (talk) 20:36, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Count on me to show up at any formal resolution process in favor of keeping the name. Binksternet (talk) 03:46, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The RFCN has begun.--Ipatrol (talk) 02:59, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi. It is unfortunate that it has come to this, but you really must seriously consider the objections. I have added my views at [1]. Thanks, IZAK (talk) 09:53, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I am replying to this mainly on the RFCN page. FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ 14:39, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know that you have my 100% support in keeping your username, a small subset of editors who chose to nitpick should not get in the way of this. Happy editing :-) Jenuk1985 | Talk 01:50, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much!  :) FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ (talk) 02:00, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How to link to image files without displaying the image[edit]

I don't know if you figured this out on your own or if someone else helped you, but in case not, here's the answer:

When you want to insert an image into a page, you surround the filename with two brackets, like this:

[[File:YidishBarnstar.png]]

But if you only want to link to the image, you have to "disable" the image by inserting a colon after the first pair of brackets:

[[:File:YidishBarnstar.png]]

This little trick works for categories as well. Normally, if you want to include an article into a particular category, you just simply type a wikilink to that category. But if you want to link to the category itself, you must add a colon before the first letter of the link.

Thanks for the tip! Wiki's code is quite a bit different than HTML, and there's a lot I need to learn. FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ (talk) 03:04, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Self-promotion[edit]

(See User_talk:Draeco#How_to_handle_self_promoter.3F)

Good to hear from you FeygeleGoy, and I'm glad to see you're staying active. In the network management matter, you did some very nice detective work and acted correctly.

I'll only make one point: User:MrOllie reverted [2] another instance of linkspam [3] by the same IP to the same article, then beat you to warning the user [4]. Then you came along to warn as well, so in effect this IP was warned twice for a pair of very similar edits. Some patrollers will only warn once for multiple infractions that are similar/nearly simultaneous/on the same article. This is because they see several edits as one period of ignorance, assume good faith, warn once, and hope the editor will change. The way you warned twice is not wrong (if anything, it's more technically correct), but be aware it's on the stricter end of the spectrum.

There's no full policy page on this matter. This is the most applicable; other blurbs include WP:SOAP #4 and #5, and this COI section, plus it obviously violates the core policy of WP:NPOV. Even though it's sometimes well-intentioned, self-promoting is a form of vandalism, and should be dealt with if it persists. Three warnings are customary before you request a block by an admin at WP:AIV. - Draeco (talk) 22:26, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'll keep it in mind not to be too harsh. Perhaps the IP feels their product is a good source of info, and wants to get the word out, not considering they may not be a non-biased source. In any case, I've seen that User:MrOllie has the matter under control, so I will leave it alone, too many cooks and all that.

I'll read the links, as I enjoy learning how to edit, not just the technical aspect, but also the social aspect, which would include showing mercy for innocent blunders. I usually look out for vandalism, and I've been frustrated to see an IP used for vandalism repeatedly getting level 1 warnings, so I probably could have handled the incident with more finesse (including checking to see if it was already being handled by someone else at the moment). I'm used to considering matters such as whether or not a vandal is aggressive, or if they are mixing sincere edits with joking ones. I'll keep in mind that just because I walk into an ongoing infraction doesn't necessarily mean it should be treated as escalating. FeygeleGoy/פֿײגעלע גױ‎ (talk) 23:03, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:12, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
