Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, ForestGEO. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Notfrompedro (talk) 19:06, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

September 2021[edit]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of name and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Longhair\talk 19:23, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, NotFromPedro, Longhair, and JavaHurricane, I write with apologies for inadvertent wrongdoing and with a request for clarification. The organization that I work for (ForestGEO) did not have a Wikipedia page, but its earlier organizational self (the Center for Tropical Forest Science) did and was outdated. So, too, was a mention of ForestGEO under the page for the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. I understand concern about conflict of interest, thus I disclosed my affiliation and provided citations to academic journal articles to substantiate the entry that I wrote for ForestGEO. I did not mean to promote/advertise the organization, only to update the record (CTFS no longer exists) and fill in a gap (ForestGEO exists). If I am not allowed to write this entry, who is? I read yesterday about requesting an article to be written, but, frankly got confused by the process, thus decided to proceed with transparency. How shall we move forward? ForestGEO (talk) 13:21, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ForestGEO, no one will see the message above because you need to started it with a link to the user, most particularly admin Longhair and sign it as I am doing here.
Alternatively follow the unblock request procedure described above, that will attract an admin to consider the request. Either way, it's unlikely that you will allowed to write about your organisation, but if it's notable enough, someone will Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:22, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
