Wikiproject Saints

John, you ask a good question at Wikiproject Saints. You can find a list of the Catholic Encyclopedia topics here, but note this warning on the page: "commentaries and perspectives of some articles may not be appropriate for inclusion in Wikipedia ...While the text is public domain PLEASE do not simply dump text from the CE into Wikipedia without modification." There are some POV problems, some style problems, and some factual problems (it is 100 years old) with the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia. If you add text -- put it in your own words.
As for a rating system of the CE articles -- there is not one that I know of. We have over 1000 unrated saints articles on wikipedia, and I would imagine any rating project for CE articles would have the same result.

John the Apostle deletions

Thanks for the notice. While I agree with you that removing contentious information from the article to somewhere else might make for a more peaceful existence for us all, I think it would be a disservice to our readers and a capitulation to authoritarian and repressive elements, a very dangerous thing. Christian Saints

I have proposed a cat that you created for deletion here. I believe that this category is redundent. We should keep common saints in the "Saints" and "Saints by Country" categories, and move any saints that are only unique to a specific denomination out of those categories and into the corresponding "Saints by denomination" category. This way, the default is that a "Saint" is someone holy and recognized by all denominations that recognize saints, and that the "by denomination" category is for the ones that are unique. I do not believe we need a long list of all the saints that are common. It seems redundent and extraneous.-Andrew c 17:03, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

"Saint Ruth"?

Ruth is an Old Testament "hero", but by what criterion is she a saint in the ordinary usual sense of the word? How often do people refer to "St. Ruth"? AnonMoos 00:02, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't really care about the banner on the talk page; I was more worried about what the criteria are for being included in Category:Old_Testament_saints . I have found many of the central articles about Lutheranism have trolls living on the pages. I re-added the banner, we'll see if it stays this time. Lutheran Calendar of Saints

John

I was over looking at the new “Renewers of Society” page (and I agree with you that it is overkill and whomever is sponsoring it isn’t even catching all the names from the calendar), and I read your comment on the discussion board about adding more churches calendars to the main calendar. While I am, in part, favorable to such an idea, I would have to make the following observations

1. If you mean adding the calendars of other North American Lutherans groups, we already have the majority of NA Lutherans in the ELCA and LCMS calendars (WELS’s rather empty calendar consists mainly of the major festivals that are common to all three groups, from what I can tell). Now, I know that there are more than twenty different Lutheran churches in North America alone, but by and large, I have found that they are either A) groups who wish to de-emphasize the catholic nature of Lutheranism (i.e., make it more reformed) and as such have very limited calendars or B) groups who wish to overemphasize the medieval catholic nature of Lutheranism (i.e., marry Luther to Trent) and as such have calendars which are very similar to the Traditional Catholic Calendar. But, more importantly, including every one of these “micro-synods” would over burden the article, making it far too cumbersome to use. As far as I’m concerned having the ELCA and the LCMS on one calendar is overdoing it enough, but it is, at least, doable.

2. If you mean adding the calendars of other Lutheran Churches worldwide, this would be good, but I would think that a better idea might be to have them as separate articles in the national language (i.e., for the Church of Sweden, have the Church of Sweden’s calendar in Swedish) with a relevant language link back to the English calendar. The other option would be to create separate calendars, much as has been done with the Anglican calendars of saints, despite the fact that they are all very similar.

I don’t want to discourage you from engaging in any work. Since I’m the one who created the article, I feel a certain level of responsibility for ensuring its overall well being, hence my “heading you off at the pass,” so to speak. As I said, I’m all for more information, but I think any additional calendars should be rendered as separate articles rather than incorporated into the current text. Just something to think about as you work forward.

Caroline Chisholm

Hi - can you please cite a reference for your inclusion of Caroline Chisholm as a saint. History of Turkey

I was just puzzled by seeing the wikiproject "History of Turkey" template in the article Talk:Byzantine Empire, an anachronistic assessment. The article already has the template of history of Greece. No probs, I was just wondering whether it should be kept or not. I don't think anyone of the wikiproject Turkey has an interest on that article. Miskin 19:54, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

The banner is already included in the article Constantinople due to the fact that the Ottoman Empire kept the city's original name, and "Turkey" was an unofficial name for the Ottoman Empire. But I don't think that the banner has a place in the Byzantine Empire, if for no good reason because the term "Turkey" was unknown to post-late-Ottoman times. Similarly, the banner of history of Greece, Serbia, Armenia etc are not found in Ottoman Empire. It's just that none of those peoples see those articles as part of their history or cultural heritage. License tagging for Image:Rulonfull.jpg

Book of Ezekiel

Sorting through the "Saints articles that need infoboxes" category yesterday I noticed that there was a lone Biblical book which declared the need for an infobox, Book of Ezekiel. I thought it was strange that a Biblical book would even be included in WP Saints, so I deleted the infobox and left a comment explaining why on the discussion page (one reason was that no other Biblical books have such a WP designation). Pastordavid brought up on my talk page that he believed that you were the one that added it in the first place, and could probably provide a rationale for why you did so. Referring to your comment in my talk page: I have linked many of my missing topics pages to relevant Wikiprojects (if I could find one) but my resources to help all of them are limited. Hello. I'm currently anticipating a feud with Makemi over the placement of a Saints Wikiproject infobox on Hildegard of Bingen. Given that you are a constant contributor to the Saints WP, and that you tagged the article as needing an infobox, I thought I should warn you that if she does not see the reasoning of the argument I laid forth on her talk page, I'll be bringing it to the discussion page for the article, and may need some backup. Along with the observations I made on her talk page, I also noted that almost all of her edits to the article in question are reverts. This is probably worth noting. Thanks! thank you for checking in with me

It's odd that the discussion previous to this is about Hildegard von Bingen as someone just gave me a CD of her music. Which I have not yet listened to, and might profit by doing. Anyway I am an anarchist by leaning and am finding that some of the bureaucratic tendencies of wikipedia are overwhelming me. Suddenly it seems as if I need to spend more time watching articles or categories to be deleted than it is to write content or be on vandal patrol. I've been advised to "not take it personally" but it feels as if I just got off a train in Dachau or some such place and was told to "not take it personally" . Okay, so I am over reacting, but it's the feel better place right now. I do appreciate your kind words. Carptrash 16:25, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

The particular deletion today was one the sneaked past me - or perhaps paraded by with flags waving and I missed it. 6 or 7 editors got to vote out something I'd taken hours to put together and that was of great use to me. I created it as a tool for me, and anyone else interested in that little arcane corner of the universe, to use to navigate around with and I used it quite a lot. In any case I have 1,000 pages on my WATCHLIST and for sure I do miss things. I'm cleaning out my space here and likely will be checking in and out for the next while but am not planning on doing any real editing. After years of addiction Cold Turkey is a hard way to go and I don't feel up to it right now. Two nights ago Walt {I forget his user name} and I spent an exciting evening creating Ulric Ellerhusen from scratch. I am happy with leavingat the top of my game, so to speak. Well do you mind looking at the deletion, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_March_6#Category:Sculptors_who_exhibited_at_the_3rd_Sculpture_International and seeing if you think they have a valid point or not? I am not inclined to resist due process too hard, esp. if a fairly neutral editor (you in this case) thinks that what was done creates a better wikipedia. Carptrash 18:39, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
Certainly (which always means opinion) one way to go would be to create a category of atists who exhibited at the Armory Show. That would be harder to dismiss out-of-hand because its significance is the stuff of legend, if not religion. "Orphaned" potential projects

I don't think there's any established procedure for what to do in such cases—it is not particularly important who "creates" the projects, per se. If there is support for an idea, anyone who is involved with it can begin setting up the project page. You may want to take a look at this if you are interested in starting things up yourself. Otherwise, if you want to see a project started but feel incapable of starting it yourself, you could contact someone else who has expressed interest, and ask them to, or simply state that any user that comes along could create it. I saw your proposal for project specific missing article lists on WP:COUNCIL just now. I am Coordinator for WikiProject LGBT studies and am very interested in in putting together a possible list (though I don't suppose there would be many in our area). I'm not sure if I can put together a reliable list of LGBT people. There are four here, but I can't vouch in any way for their veracity. Would these be acceptable? Perhaps you could seach the entries by certain code words as well, such "homosexual", "pederasty", "gay" etc.? That might pull out entries not to do with people (though, again, I wouldn't imagine there will be many). I shall ask on the project if anyone else knows of a reliable list. Hi John, would you be able to make an IRC meeting at 19:00 UTC (that's like GMT) on Sunday? Once you have downloaded Chatzilla, click on the channel URL (in this case #wikipedia-1.0) and you will join the meeting (Chatzilla will start up automatically). I always get an annoying "You need to be administrator to do that" message, but since I have no clue what "that" is I've always ignored it! Please let us know here if you can come. Thanks! In regards to WIkiProject Filmbiography John, only one tag will be created it will be a biography tag but half of it at the bottom will state "This article in maintained by the Film Biography group. Further comment I left on the council page. You like my Mr Bigglesworth? I am trying to find a minime too but can't seem to locate one. I couldn't use the real Blofeld image ion my user so I had to improvise!!! What I mean is for example see Talk:Baimai. It would be a Biogrpahy template with the bottom half stating the Film Biogrpahy boundaries. Coptic Saints

Dear Warlordjohncarter; Please do not add the category Coptic Saint to the Egyptian saints. The already-existing category Egyptian Saint is enough, particularly that the names Copt and Egyptian are virtually synonymous. Thanks! --Lanternix 19:57, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your reply. From my point of view, it would be more useful to create 2 different categories. The first would be Egyptian saints and would include saints of all Christian denominations who were born and lived in Egypt, or who were born elsewhere to Egyptian parent(s). The second category would be saints recognized by the Coptic Orthodox Church. The problem with a category called Coptic saints is manyfold. First, Coptic simply means Egyptian. So for example called a saint like Saint Takla Himanot a Coptic saint is inaccurate, since he was Ethiopian, not Egyptian. The other problem is that Coptic also includes Catholics and Protestants. So for instance calling Pope Dioscorus a Coptic saint is inaccurate because, although he is considered a saint in the Coptic Orthodox Church, he is considered a heretic by the Coptic Catholic Church and the various Coptic Protestant denominations. This is why I believe a category named saints recognized by the Coptic Orthodox Church is more accurate.

some caution please

Please do not readd WikiProjects templates if they are already included in a {{WikiProjectBanners}}, as you have done here. The result of your actions was that Che Guevara was removed from the core biographies category, and information was lost, and I had to spend quite some time tracking which article was missing from the list. Task forces being listed

Sorry I took a while to reply - it's been a very busy week! My opinion would be to list task forces if possible, I think many of them are as large as many traditional WikiProjects.
