Advocacy request[edit]

Heyo, Steve Caruso here. There is a Request for assistance by user HeirToPendragon (talk) on the article Firebender due to an ongoing dispute with an anonymous IP who is consistently reverting some of his edits. Would you be willing to take his case? If you will, please leave a note and sign under his entry on WP:AMARQ. If not give me a ping on my talk page so I can continue searching for a willing Advocate. Thanks! אמר Steve Caruso (desk/poll) 17:36, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Orane, Steve here. How goes the case with HeirToPendragon? If it is finished, please be sure to set its status to "closed" on the AMA Requests page so I can archive it. Thanks! אמר Steve Caruso (desk/AMA) 01:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

H2P Request[edit]

I found a screenshot of my proof in question and posted it on the talk page. Would that count as a source? Should I reference it on the article? H2P 20:13, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contributing the impressive the pile of supports gathered on my RfA, which passed with a final tally of 0x0104/0x01/0x00. I'm happy that so many people have put faith in my abilities as an admin and promise to use the tools wisely and do my best not to let you down. If I ever may be of assistance, just leave a note on my talk page.

Diane Kunz and its AfD process[edit]

Greetings! I noticed that, in April, you welcomed User:VivianDarkbloom to Wikipedia. I thought you might either be able to assist with an issue with said user that's ongoing or—at least point me in the right direction for assistance.

Diane Kunz was prodded, deprodded, and then nominated for deletion (AfD page). Vivian has repeatedly taken it upon (him-/)herself to, well, hijack the AfD process. Consensus of opinions of editors is unanimously, but for Vivian, in favor of deletion, yet Vivian will close the article as a keep.

Vivian's concern is that the article put up for AfD had been "vandalized" and was missing key data. I reviewed it, and the two issues missing were that Kunz had published four books (three of which were universty press publications) and was repeatedly denied tenure at Yale and one other university.

The second time she improperly closed the discussion, I reopened it by applying the nowiki tag to her comments, preserving exactly what she had written. She made no effort to discuss this on the AfD page; instead, she applied the test3 template to my talk page. (Another editor since moved her discussion rationale) Basically, I don't feel like she's making any effort to discuss the issue, but is just trying to force it by abuse of the process.

If she really feels that the article was unfairly considered for AfD because of the missing information, I would be willing to compromise and have it re-listed to have fuller consideration of it in its expanded form.

Anyway, sorry if this is out of your field, but if there's anything you can do to assist or bring in somebody who specializes in these sort of issues, I would appreciate it. Regards, —C.Fred (talk) 02:20, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Think you could find an image for me?[edit]

Hey Orane, I was wondering if you could find me an image for this article which I am currently working on. Having a picture of the subject would really help it out. Let me know soon! KOS | talk 15:04, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what to tag that as once it is uploaded? Could you add it to the article when you get a free moment?[1]

More Olympic flags[edit]

Jamaica got its current flag in 1962. Do you know which flag they used before that time ? Punkmorten 11:00, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not really sure. Commons has two (slightly different) images purporting to be of pre-Federation Jamaican flags ([2] and [3]). My guess would be the second of those, as the coat of arms is more similar to Image:Jamaica coa. The 1952 and 1956 Official Reports include pictures of teams behind their flags in the opening ceremony; neither picture of Jamaica's flag is that helpful, but the 1956 one appears to support a Blue Ensign defaced with a coat of arms. -- Jonel | Speak 16:52, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any comment, Journalist? Punkmorten 20:00, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for taking so long to reply. I was at work. The first image —Image:Flag of Jamaica 1906-1957.gif — is the flag that Jamaica used between 1906 and 1957. However, after 1957, Jamaica changed the pattern and added a yellow emblem to the coat of arms— Image:Colonial_Jamaican_flag.gif. In other words, the latter flag is the one used just before independence. Hope that helps. Orane (talkcont.) 22:10, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

my RfA[edit]

Thanks for your support opinion on my RfA. With a final vote of (62/0/1), my RfA passed, and I am now an Administrator. I will work hard to ensure that the tools entrusted to me will not be abused, and will wield my mop proudly.
Happy editing! --Firsfron of Ronchester 23:29, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User Needs help[edit]

Hello Journalist, You seem to be the only one on here with common sense. Can you tell me how to upload music files so i can post them on TIreh's page. I'm tired of childdish people posting in-correct talk responses and everythign else .. is there a way i can send them to you?

Unfortunately I do not know how to upload music files. Most people who want them uploaded go to Rossrs (talk · contribs). I'm sure that he can help you. Orane (talkcont.) 16:16, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
THank you, what about images, i have some images of tireh that can go on his page
First, you need to make sure that the images aren't copyrighted, or they qualify as fair use. (Wikipedia:Image use policy and Wikipedia:Fair use should provide further details.) Once you have reviewded the images, you need to open an account on Wikipedia (only registered users can upload images) then go to Special:Upload. After taking note of the warnings on that page, click "browse" which will allow you to choose the image(s) that you want to upload... It's pretty straightforward after this. If you have any questions or comments, you know where to find me, O.K? Orane (talkcont.) 18:16, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you , this is all too confusing i uploaded the picture onto wikipedia.. for some reason i cant get it onto the page. here is the link http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/04/Tirehmag.jpg

Ok i g figured it out, finally... lol lastly is there anyway you can archive that talk page because i feel as though its a bunch of bickering and comparing.. that basically has nothing at all to do with the article.

Advocacy request[edit]

Hi, I am reaching out to you with an odd situation even for Wikipedia. I attempted to edit the article on John Littlechild who led the first Special Irish Branch for the UK police and who also investigated the Jack the Ripper and Oscar Wilde cases. I saw that the article only touched on the career points of the subject. I noted that the formation of the Special Branch was opressive to the Irish and that Littlechild has a homophobe for his prosecution of Wilde.

These edits were promptly removed several times by editor Ben W. Bell 2 - a pro British Irish Protestant. The editor Necrothesp -- who authored the article -- also removed various entries. I even reduced the entry to say that the formation of the Special Branch was oppressive to the Irish and nothing more. This too was removed under the excuse that I was offering a POV and not a neutral objective fact.

I was going to get administrators to act as third parties but became intimidated by one simple fact -- on Necrothesp's user page its states that he is a British cop and a member of the U.K. Territorial army. I could go on forever talking about why the British police should not be allowed to edit articles on Northern Ireland but that would be useless. I travel in the UK a great deal and the police have special powers to trace users of any BBS system.

Necrothesp and Ben W. Bell also kept posting on my talk page after I said I felt intimidated. I asked them nicely to leave unitl after the editing conflict wass resolved but they still kept posting. I feel very intimidated. I would like to revise the article with more solid sources but fear being ganged up on again by Necorthesp the cop and his friend Ben W. Bell. In the last entry he made on my talk page Necorthest suggested I leave Wikipedia altogether which is very intimidating coming from someone who is a policeman.

I would still like to edit the article but would like you or some other advocate to watch what is being said and done. Please help!

I look forward to hearing from you.

617USA 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I'm perfectly calm, trust me. But I do think I have a right to refute what blatant falsehoods and insults wherever they are posted. As to "don't bite the newcomer", normally I would agree with you, but not after the stuff that has been issuing from this editor's "mouth". These are not understandable mistakes. These are personal attacks and threats, and we have a policy against those. -- Necrothesp 19:54, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • The full quote was If you wish to post POV rants and then object to discussing them then I suggest you find another website to contribute to. There are plenty out there that would love to hear your views, I'm sure. But an encyclopaedia is not the place for them. That's telling me to leave Wikipedia and I take it as a police threat. What you call menacing I call threatening because this man is cop. I also find it highly insulting that he would remove the statement claiming the Special Branch was formed to harass the Irish. That is not a POV - its a point of fact like 1 + 1 = 2. It does not matter what hard sources I give for this because the British bully copper would just say they were invalid sources because they do not fit the purview of the imperialist masters this cop works for. Just look how quick he comes back to my discussion page even after I did not re-edit the article in question and even after I said I felt initmidated and asked him not to post. He seems to be ranting off a bit at you from the above passage. He keeps ranting on my page making wild statements because I tried to change 3 sentences of one of his articles and even approach him in a friendly manner before I did it. I see he has had trouble with others in this area and I am not surprised. They have already threatened to get me barred I will never directly repsond to his (their) rants.

You were no help.

617USA

Well, I'm sorry that you feel that way, but I cannot be held responsible for the actions of others. I was not there to defend you — I am a mediator, not your lawyer or security guard. You cannot push POV into an article, and label it as a logical fact. And you cannot label someone a "bias anti-Catholic bigot" for removing it. I'm sorry that you feel intimidated by Necrothesp's message, but comments like these are made on a daily basis to radical editors like you, and no one has ever taken them this seriously. I suggest that, for your own good, you read the policies and guidelines that I quoted before you continue to contribute. Thank you. Orane (talkcont.) 20:54, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please leave me alone[edit]

I am trying to end the matter so please don't contact me anymore. I don't want your opinion and think you are a poor moderator. Just stay away from my page and let's let the matter drop. I just want you and the cop and the other guy to leave me alone. 617USA 21:16, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the thing about Wikipedia: no one owns it. You cannot stop another editor from posting on your talk page (unless he/she is threatening you, or making bad faithed edits.) You posted on my page, I replied to you — its as simple as that. Your behaviour here indicates that you have no idea how Wikipedia opperates — or how a mediator/moderator opperates. Orane (talkcont.) 21:25, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey,
I am just trying to move on, on Wikipedia. If you post there than Necrothesp and Ben will return. I was not rude or offensive to you and I regret seeking your help -- I can say that can't I? I just want to quitely work on other articles with solid sources not be dwell on the past and that's how Wikipedia operates. Please just leave me alone -- that's not rude as there's room enough for everyone here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 617USA (talkcontribs) 22:18, 31 July 2006 (UTC)~[reply]

Dear Orane, if there was "one" Wikipedian I expected to post his favorites at my Soundtrack page, that was you - could you do me the honor of posting your selection one of these days... puh-puh-please? ;) Hope you're doing great, dear - *hugs*! Now now, what a suprise to see songs by Celine Dion and Mariah Carey among your selection, dear O ;) Thank you for sharing it - I knew you'd like the challenge! Hugz, Phaedriel The Wiki Soundtrack! - 01:07, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's not an entirely original idea, hun. As I mention in the page itself, it's an adaptation from a very old idea that sparked in de.Wiki once. Rentastrawberry also compiled a similar list for a long while. But I thought it would be nice to recycle it anew, and in fact what gives me more pleasure is that some people have actually become friends by talking about their musical tastes at the talk page.
I'll take the opportunity to tell you it's great to see you back, O. You were very, truly, utterly, sorely missed while you were away. In fact, I added you to my MSN to see if I could get a hold of you someday - but you never use it! :( Oh well... all's well that ends well! ;) Hugs, Phaedriel The Wiki Soundtrack! - 01:20, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jamaica[edit]

I spent my 19th birthday in Ocho Rios. I really wish I could have stayed longer. I can't wait to go back sometime. There was such a nice vibe there, and I'm guessing the rest of Jamaica is pretty interesting. I saw Life and Debt a few months ago and it only made me appreciate Jamaica more. I think the most interesting part of Jamaica was the juxtaposition of poverty and luxury. The greatest example was seeing a huge resort (I think it was a "Sandles") and literally a few seconds down the road were run-down shacks. It was depressing and beautiful at the same time. The people were really great though. Anyway, I want to go there sometime after college to see what's beyond the surface. Maybe spend a few months travelling around the country. I really want to go to some of the coffee farms in the Blue Mountains to see what the labor conditions are like. The coffee is really great, but I feel guilty because I'm sure a lot of the workers are treated like dirt (then again, what workers aren't?).

Oh, and Phaedriel, see me meeting another person from your soundtrack? :) The Ungovernable Force 06:03, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you enjoy your time there. Yes, the people there are great (well some of them anyway). I love it and miss it so much. I wish I could go back for atleast a day.
And no, the coffee pickers arent "treated like dirt". I should know, I lived around the Blue Mountain area :). Orane (talkcont.) 23:20, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Greetings from Poland :)[edit]

Hi Orane, thank you for honorary award. I must admit I don't know all Wikipedia rules yet and didn't know anything about awards but it's always nice to get one :)

I fell in love with Celine's "Falling Into You" album too - it was my first album. Now, after 10 years I still love her. During that I gathered most of her albums and some singles. I created two Celine's websites. First one doesn't exist anymore. Second one called Celine Dion Chart History was created in 2002. Right now I'm doing some changes so it will be online back in October this year. I have also spent a lot of time this year to find all detailed Celine's chart facts from many countries. I have posted them on some forums, for example here - my nick name there is jeangrey.

I know many facts about Celine and I will help creating her pages with pleasure. I see you did a really good job with her site and now you try to keep it together (because everybody wants to change things their way). Many thanks for that. I'm glad Celine has fans like you! I didn't have the time to see your other sites but I will try to make it up.

I can have two problems:
1) I don't know all Wikipedia rules so I can make some mistakes (hope it won't happen too often),
2) I can make mistakes with my English, so if there are any in my articles feel free to correct them.

Help![edit]

I do not know where to add this, it would not work via mediation and there is nothing else of the sort really however you are a admin on the mediation commitee and all. Sorry if this isn't your area but could you point me in the direction of someone to see if not. The article uncyclopedia is a problem. It is not complete and definatly not npov and in accordance with this I added a preliminary criticism section fully intending for more substance to be added later but...it was reverted. So I tried again toning down what I'd said to something totally acceptable but not complete...And it was flatly reverted twice. So in accordance with the 3 reverts rule I took it to discussion and added a npov tag on the main page- however the denizens of that article even revert the npov tag!--Josquius 17:16, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at my talkback history, Blacklist has been harrasing me for months over something I'm long done with, leaving threats and calling me a "troll" before altering his posts as a way of rephrasing his continued abuse towards me. September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
