Administrators' newsletter – February 2018[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2018).

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has closed with a consensus that candidates at WP:RFA must disclose whether they have ever edited for pay and that administrators may never use administrative tools as part of any paid editing activity, except when they are acting as a Wikipedian-in-Residence or when the payment is made by the Wikimedia Foundation or an affiliate of the WMF.
  • Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.

Technical news

  • A tag will now be automatically applied to edits that blank a page, turn a page into a redirect, remove/replace almost all content in a page, undo an edit, or rollback an edit. These edits were previously denoted solely by automatic edit summaries.

Ropewalk (film)[edit]

Hello,

I understand that you're the administrator who deleted the article Ropewalk (film). In fact, I admit I was the one who nominated that particular article for deletion in deletion. Well, I've had a change of heart and decided to recreate the article. I have provided reliable sources that mention the film to establish notability per WP:NFSOURCES.

I've read on top of your talk page: "If an admin action made by me is more than a year old, you may reverse or modify it without consulting me first. However, I would appreciate being notified after the fact." That being said, the deletion was two years ago and I'm letting you know that I'm recreating it per your wishes. Thank you. Unfortunately I don't think any of the sources you added constitute significant coverage. They are all one-line mentions of Ropewalk only in the context of having been previously directed by Matthew Brown. -- King of ♠ 20:47, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see. In that case, what do you propose to do? Please note I have no objection for the article to be deleted again. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 20:02, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I found a source from Variety that doesn't mention Browh but does mention actors Fred Ward and Lesley Ann Warren as the stars of the film. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 05:16, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mean to pile on, I found another source this time from Screen Daily. Both these sources are dated back from 2000, which is the year the film was released. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 05:24, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I found one last source again from Variety. Now do these three sources constitute significant coverage? Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 05:34, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think about bringing COTW back?[edit]

Hi King of Hearts,

I noticed that you were engaged in collaboration of the week (COTW) events a long time ago. Looks like the cost of coordinating to select articles to focus on might be a main reason to make COTW stop (maybe there were more), though COTW seemed pretty effective in engaging project members working together. I am thinking to create a tool to help recommend articles to WikiProjects. Just wonder what do you think about it? Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 18:33, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

COTW mostly stopped because it was originally intended to fill in massive gaps in Wikipedia's coverage (e.g. Roaring Twenties went from nothing to a pretty decent article within a week in 2005), and now such gaps no longer exist. But whatever you decide to do, I'll try to help out when I can. -- King of ♠ 00:41, 26 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
