Suicide MOS[edit]

As per MOS:SUICIDE, "Killed him/her/themself" is acceptable and encyclopedic. I find a lot of editors (including me) find "died by suicide" to be akin to saying "died by murder" and in poor form, but many editors also disagree with the phrase "committed suicide" as implying that someone committed a crime or assigning blame. The linked MOS lists a bunch of alternatives, "killed himself" is the most direct. --RockstoneSend me a message! 08:11, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Kia ora @User:Rockstone35 yes, thank you I was looking for MOS:SUICIDE but was drawing a blank. I dislike 'committed suicide', but the wording read "took his own life" which in my view is similarly bad (where did he take his life too?). Thanks for linking the essay! Vela incident[edit]

Hi ,

I saw you removed the below. Rather than deletion help in editing is appreciated

Additional postulation for the blast location is provided in the novel “The Last War” written by Captain Abe Ariel a retired Israeli Master Mariner [43]. There it is determined it was a neutron blast and its location is pin-pointed to Truls Island, an elusive rock, situated in the center of the “area in which possible nuclear explosion occurred”, as was reported by Newsweek Magazine [44]. Truls Island was discovered by Captain Hanriksen, the master of the Norwegian ship Truls, while en route from South Africa to South Georgia in late 1929 [45]. According to the Hydrographer of the Royal Navy, the 150 feet tall island’s (or rather the rock’s) position is “about lat. 56º 07’ South, long. 23º 39’ East, and existence is doubtful.” [46] Times Atlas of the World has printed it with the notation ED – Existence Doubtful. [47]). The official attitude of the British Admiralty was that Truls Island remained unconfirmed [48]. All these made it an excellent location for clandestine nuclear tests.

Kind Regards

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay[edit]

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: ah - I would've have loved to but I am out of the country (for the foreseeable future). There's some interesting politicians from that region which could use some work, as well as the house I was born in (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q79308197). Have so much fun! Enjoy your time overseas. There’ll be heaps of opportunity in the future to catch up in person, with WikiCons at least annually. Do get in touch if you ever come to Golden Bay! Schwede66 12:54, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
