Welcome![edit]

Hello, PGleick, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited was Peter Gleick, which appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or any other editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One firm rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! Jonathan. Thank you for your message. I'm a novice here, so I'm on a steep learning curve. Certainly if an edit of mine is inappropriate, let me know. I'm trying hard not to edit my own page ... I have adding top-level biographical info at times (Awards, Books, major lectures...). I did swap out the photo a while ago, but presume this isn't controversial. Let me know. And if I have bigger issues/changes, perhaps I can be in touch with you? PGleick (talk) 19:11, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I guess those earlier edits you mention were done from an IP account rather than logged in?

I doubt you've done anything too controversial, and your page has enough people watching it that anything controversial will get noticed and acted upon fairly fast. Basically you shouldn't edit your own page, but if you do the best approach is (1) be completely open, (2) don't change anything which could even possibly be considered controversial, and (3) if challenged back down immediately.

If you do want a change made which might be considered controversial then the best thing to do is to describe what you would like done on the talk page and wait for somebody else to implement it if they agree with you. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 17:59, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jonathan. OK, thanks. PGleick (talk) 18:19, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WP:FOC Focus on Content[edit]

Peter,

I understand that Wikipedia is frustrating, and must be particularly so when it contains one's own biography. Ordinarily when the subject of a biography sugests changes to an article they should focus on the content. That is to say they suggest specific (often bullet pointed) changes. These usually get good attention and response. Those that make the mistake of focussing on other editors have less success. I would suggest reformulating your edit on the talk page specifically talking about what you think should be in your article and removing repeated mentions of me. Focus on the content, not on the other editors. This is, by the way, how discussion on all wikipedia talk pages is done. We don't (or shouldn't) be talking about other editors but about the edits. The link above is a good explanation of the hows and whys. Again, I understand your concerns and I am sharing this in order to improve your experience here. If you have any questions at all please feel free to ask. I will be happy to advise or assist. Capitalismojo (talk) 22:44, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In order to more easily understand, I'd like to share the example of Ted Frank. Here is someone who, like you, has a biography page with things he'd like changed. This is how it was handled. I hope this helps. Capitalismojo (talk) 22:50, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! I'm learning. I appreciate the feedback. PGleick (talk) 23:09, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Truly, I am glad to help. This is far from a unique situation that you face. Capitalismojo (talk) 23:19, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've edited it and removed all reference to you except to point to the discussion on your talk page at the outset; and I've tried to be more explicit, like the example your provided. Hope this is better/ok. PGleick (talk) 23:33, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
