HJ Mitchell is mistaken. The copyright for the material I added to the Giedroyc and Giedraiciai Family pages does not belong to anyone else. I was the author. HJ Mitchell may have come to his mistaken conclusion because he saw very similar material on the On-line Gotha site, to which I included a link. But I was the author of that material too. Whatever happens, the material on the Giedroyc and Giedraiciai Family pages is incomplete and inaccurate and needs to be corrected.

You'll need to provide some kind of proof that a) you're the author (or at least the copyright holder) of the other webpage and b) it has been released under a license compatible with its use in Wikipedia in order for the material to be restored and your account to be unblocked. Would an email from the owner of the other web page suffice? Alternatively, I could just place a link to other web page, without putting the text itself on the Wikipedia pages. Whatever happens, as I said, the Wikipedia pages need correcting. Indeed even the title of one of the pages is wrong. There is no "Giedraiciai Family". There is a Giedraitis family (in Lithuanian), the Polish name of which is Giedroyc. Giedraiciai is a place, not a family name.

It would if they can prove they're the owner, certainly. Alternatively, you can add something to the page that states you release it under the CC-BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike. The Wikipedia article on the licenses is quite useful for more information. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:21, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See immediately below my email exchange with Paul Theroff, the owner of the On-line Gotha site where my material on the Giedroyc family appears. Is that exchange sufficient for you to restore the information I submitted? (You will see from the home page of the On-line Gotha site http://www.angelfire.com/realm/gotha/gotha/gotha.htm that its owner is Paul Theroff; and it gives the email address at which I have corresponded with him.)

What if I added something to my page to this effect?: "Much of the information on this page was compiled and assembled by Philip Parham, for use on this page. However, with my consent he retained the right to use the same information, in the same or in any form, on other sites, and to publish such information as he sees fit."

If I added that language, would Wikipedia then allow you to use it there? I will be happy to do whatever is in my power to allow you to use this information, which is after all the product of your work.

Sincerely,

Paul Theroff

Dear Mr Theroff

You may recall that I sent you last year the Giedroyć genealogy which you included in your On-line Gotha, and also a small contribution to your compilation of the descendants of James I (see below).

I have also tried to correct/amplify the information about the Giedroyć family on a couple of Wikipedia pages. But a Wikipedia editor has spotted that my proposed text is largely the same as my introduction to the Giedroyć genealogy on your website. So they say I cannot put it on Wikipedia without confirmation of your consent. This confirmation could be done by email if it included proof that you own the On-line Gotha website (but I'm not quite sure how such proof would be constituted). Or, they say, you can add something to the page on your site which states that you release it under the CC-BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike). But I can well imagine that you might not want to do that. The alternative would be for me simply to insert on the Wikipedia pages a link to the Giedroyć page on your site. Please let me know what would be your preference.

Best wishes

Philip Parham

Right, I've unblocked you, but please don't add that material again until we get this sorted out. What I need is for somebody who can prove they own the copyright to that text to email me (hjmitchell at ymail dot com) to say that they irrevocably release it under CC-BY-SA or, better still, to add something to that page that says the page (doesn't have to be the whole site, just that one page) is available under that license. I've received an email that satisfies me the text is usable on Wikipedia. I'll send it through the proper channels, but I'll make arrangements to have it fast tracked. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:32, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks.
