Gay vs Homosexual[edit]

Greetings,

Regarding this change:

(The modern politicians Gerry Studds, Elaine Noble, Sigurdardottir identify as gay or lesbian, not as "homosexuals".)

I have a problem with phrases like "openly gay." "Your'e gay" is a accusatory slur that homophobes use. Admitting to "I'm gay" is like saying "I have a disease" or "I'm guilty." Instead of humoring those pointing the finger, I'd rather use a scientific, dispassionate term such as "homosexual".Ryoung122 21:12, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Try this exercise. On your favorite search engine, type in those two terms; "openly gay" and "openly homosexual".
"Openly gay": CBS on Celebrities, NYTimes on Episcopalian bishops, a progay Amazon book, Gallup polls.
"Openly homosexual": Evangelical websites conflating homosexuality with pedophilia, Stormfront, a racist website, "Americans for Truth about Homosexuality", a site that promotes conversion therapy, far right FreeRepublic.com, right-wing conspiracy theories about Barney Frank...
It is self-evident which term homophobes prefer. the Homosexualist (talk) 22:35, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

/r/ vs /ɹ/[edit]

Actually, while [r] is a trill, /r/ is not, at least not necessarily. It's the common convention for English ar, and used as such on Wikipedia. If you wish to challenge it, please bring it up at WP:IPA for English rather than reverting articles like Stephen Colbert. kwami (talk) 07:55, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
