VIU's Office of Student Affairs provides students with resources and useful information to make the process of finding housing easier. Although VIU does not currently offer an on-campus housing option, we will happily assist you with locating reasonable and affordable housing in the surrounding communities. VIU acts as a liaison between local apartment complexes and students to create an all-inclusive housing experience which helps students to make friends and stay connected with the VIU community. Most apartments are located within walking distance of major public transportation routes and the university.

  • Shared Accommodation: 2 students per room (Note: You may choose to live alone in a room by paying double rent.)

Student Union[edit]

VIU Student Union Debate

Each year, VIU students hold an election for student union representatives by nominating candidates for President, Vice-President and Treasurer/Secretary. Pre-election days are an exciting time to be in campus, as students go class by class to ask for vote, posters, banners cover the walls of the campuses and there is a celebratory buzz in the air.

The mission of the SU is to strengthen student participation in university life by overseeing the formation of student clubs and contributing to the university’s decision-making process through formal channels. The SU shall serve as a forum for the discussion of matters pertaining to the welfare of VIU students and foster unity within the university. Annual elections will be held for the offices of President, Vice President, and Treasurer/Secretary.

Clubs[edit]

Student clubs are a vital part of the student’s life here in VIU. They not only serve as a diversion from the academic setting but also helps build character and responsibility among students, bridging gaps among peers. Student clubs provide a fun and easy way to meet people from across the world and form friendships that last a lifetime.

The Africa Pride club's launched October 29, 2010 was conceived with a purpose to raise awareness of African Nationals and cultures; promote discussion of economic, political and social issues in Africa; encourage VIU to seek more students from Africa; provide a platform for students interested in careers in Africa to meet with employers; and encourage development of case studies, and welcome new students to VIU by assisting with orientation.

Global Insights Student Club gives students an opportunity to become aware of the world around them and to gain knowledge of political and international topics. The club aims to provide a better understanding of political and social life by organizing activities for students at VIU. These events include conferences, panel discussions, and talks by some of the leading scholars, academics, diplomats, and politicians in the D.C. area. These events provide club members, VIU students, and the surrounding community the opportunity to engage in discussions of contemporary topics in public, political, and international relations. The club’s goal is to promote dialogue amongst students and scholars through a unique blend of educational and social events that inspire engagement world affairs. The group also collaborates to publish Global Insight Student Magazine as a means of developing students’ skills and promoting the School of Public and International Affairs.

The VIU IT Club serves as a place where all students at VIU who have an interest in IT — not just computing students — gather to discuss topics of professional interest, exchange experiences they have gathered in the workplace, and review current developments in the global IT job market. The club also seeks to promote the knowledge of information technology through seminars and workshops and to organize training for skills necessary in the information technology field. The IT Club helps its members become more marketable in rapidly changing, technology-based careers and strive ever to increase members’ potential and outreach in the community. VIU’S IT Club will promote and provide a feeling of community among computer enthusiasts at the university by:

  • Providing networking opportunities for students to meet people in the industry.
  • Visiting various computer product launching shows and computer related events.
  • Hosting interesting speakers and inviting IT service firms.
  • Spreading knowledge by offering student led workshops to non-technical students in other programs.
  • Helping students to understand the current market and its needs for the future in the IT sector.

The Indian Spirit Club serves to unite the large body of students that come from India, by hosting various Indian festivals like Diwali, Holi, Navaratri, dussehra etc. Among other activities the club hosts traditional Indian fashion shows, cultural activities in an attempt to not only unite Indians across our university but also to educate about our cultures and traditions to other nationalities.

Latin American Culture Club: The purpose of the Latin American Culture Club (LAC2) is to establish cultural exchanges between VIU students from Latin American (Central America, South America, and the Caribbean Islands) and the United States. LAC2 serves to help VIU form a connection among Latin American students and between those students and the university. LAC2 also serves as a guide for new students arriving at the university. Past activities organized by the club have included:

  • Community service
  • Culture
  • Film forums
  • Festivities and commemorative celebrations
  • Culinary arts
  • Health and fitness

The VIU Soccer Club was created with a sole aim of promoting unity among students regardless of race, religion, age, ethnic or national origin, gender, physical ability, or sexual orientation by providing activities for every type of soccer fan — whether you like playing on the field, watching professionals, playing video games, or just participating in some good old-fashioned team rivalries. Objectives:

  • Have fun playing the game, promote courtesy, respect each other, and play the game with dignity and good sportsmanship.
  • Promote extra-curricular activities among students.
  • Represent VIU as students, promote its values, and create positive awareness about the university within the community.
  • Promote unity in diversity among individuals through sports by bringing together people of different races, cultures, nationalities, and backgrounds to enjoy the sport.

TESOL Club was formed with the purpose to educate and strengthen English language skills in a fun filled way. Rigorous English classes can sometimes lack the ability to ignite passion among students thus this club dedicates its time to bring newer ways of teaching English and build friendship along the way.

Transportation Services[edit]

VIU is located close to the Vienna Metro Station. Apart from that VIU also has its own free shuttle service within its’ campuses in an attempt to ease the transition to and from VIUs’ buildings. VIUs’ current shuttle system operates a single route between the Pender and Village Drive campuses.

Entertainment[edit]

The student center, located next to Pender drive, is home to the student lounge where students can gather to socialize, form study groups, play Ping-Pong or foosball or enjoy attending organized activities such as movie nights, televised sporting events, holiday parties etc.

Magazine[edit]

Bringing together academics, executives, students, alumni, and leaders in the fields of higher education, business, computers, language, and international affairs University Magazine provides a variety of perspectives on cutting-edge topics. Founded in 2013 through a joint effort of VIU Administration, students, staff, and alumni, the magazine has grown to include contributors and readers worldwide.
