The Western Major Baseball League or WMBL is a summer collegiate baseball league. The league can trace its roots back to 1948, as it has gone by many names over the years, including the Alberta-Saskatchewan Baseball league, Western Canadian Baseball League and Saskatchewan Baseball League before settling on its current name in 2000.
The WMBL is a wood bat league along the lines of such American collegiate circuits as the Cape Cod League, the New England Collegiate Baseball League, the Coastal Plain League, the Northwoods League, the Horizon Air Summer Series, the Pacific International League and the West Coast League. It is officially classified as semi-pro and plays intraleague games on some occasions.
[edit] Member teams
2008 WMBL Membership consisted of 11 teams, in three division play. The top three teams in both the East and West divisions qualified for the post-season, along with the top two teams from the Central Division.
With the Edmonton Prospects (formerly St. Albert Prospects) resuming operations in 2009, the league will shift to two division play (Saskatchewan/Alberta).
