Error on Line 3787[edit]

I keep getting an odd error on line 3787 or 7153 whenever I try to go to any page in any namespace or refresh a page or basically try to do anything. Everything is taking a really long time to load, and has for the last several hours. It's likely to be a problem with your monobook.js and the popups script. It's either a bug in the script (sounds unlikely) or you should force a refresh of the script file (WP:CACHE). -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 06:22, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've created a user account "Dasystem" and saved. But when I run a search I get this error:

Images from Internet sites for fair use[edit]

If I find an image from an Internet site that I plan to use under fair use, do I need to get permssion from the maker/owner of the site to use it on Wikipedia?

Inserting a logo[edit]

I uploaded the logo for Aerolineas Internacionales in order to use in a table on the page of the same name. The logo is not appearing on the page. How would I insert the logo so it appears above the airline infobox? ~~otooledupree, December 23, 2006

If you look at the template you will see there is a parameter called logo=

What are the green and red numbers?[edit]

Ah I've never seen them before, must be an admin playing with the interface. I presume it either means Size in bytes of change, or size in characters. For example (-5) is 5 bytes/chars rem, and (+5) means 5 bytes/chars added. Easy to spot blanking for example if you see (-2156) you might get a bit sus. I doubt it's an admin; this has the hallmarks of being a new feature, which would mean the devs are responsible. I don't see anything in the server admin logs or the SVN trunk, but it could have been checked in any time and just activated. Essjay (Talk) 06:24, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not an admin, it's the developers. The color represents the number of bytes added (in green) or removed (in red). This change was introduced over the last few days to Special:Recentchanges, and it was extended into Special:Watchlist earlier today. The change didn't go live until the servers were scapped, but it now has. As for who introduced it in watchlists, bug Leon.^[1] Tito xd^(?!?) 06:48, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The red and green numbers in brackets[edit]

Having some trouble here with User:Red Pooka/Custom Templatez!!/vandal1. The code I have punched in for it is

The problem is that, The first "{{{1}}}" works, but the other are screwed up for some reason. E.g. I type in

As you can see the "{{{1}}}" does not give a link (it was supposed to link to the article), and "{{{2}}}" and "{{{3}}}" aren't functioning right. No.2 is treated as 3, and 3 does not even work!

Where is the original template? I might be able to take a look. While I'm at it, there are several grammar errors...I'd like to correct them. GTA missions articles[edit]

Would it be ok to create articles that deal with the missions in various GTA games? I wouldn't make them how-to's, just state what the mission is, what you're equipped with etc. I suppose most wouldn't become more than stubs. Would it be alright? Jack Daw 10:35, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Even as a single list, it would be vulnerable to deletion as something only verifiable by playing the game and only of interest to people who play it. Legality Across Languages[edit]

I was wondering what Wikipedia's policies were regarding the laws of various countries under the same language. English, for example, is used in both Britain and the U.S., two countries with very different approaches to free speech. So if someone in Britain sued for, say, libel, but they would not have grounds in the States, what would happen?

And a second question, if a libellous statement (or anything else legally questionable) is removed from one language, is it removed from all, or generally just the language in question? It just piqued my curiosity today when I was thinking about how a lot of international companies like to file lawsuits in Britain to get around that "pesky" free speech thing we have in the States here. --Ihmhi 16:05, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking, US law applies because the information is stored on servers in Florida. Different language Wikipedias are edited by different people, so if something libellous is posted it's only removed from the page it is put on. Most of the time, the person posting it won't bother posting it in different languages anyway, so there'd be nothing to remove on the other article. By the way, there's free speech in the UK too. If anything, sueing in the UK would be a better for the accused, not because there's no free speech, but because the British tend to have less ridiculous compensation claims. Free speech isn't relevant anyway, Wikipedia is about facts, free speech is about the right to give your opinion. - Well I am fairly confident that any truly libellous statements or bias would be removed over time, of course, as is the nature of Wikipedia. I am talking about matters such as, say, a politician who clearly exhibits racist views objecting to the NPOV description of him here to the point to sue Wikipedia. Were this politician in, say, England, would he have any standing to sue in England as Wikipedia's servers are primarily in America? I am just unfamiliar with this particular aspect of law and its relation to Wikipedia and the thought of this and discussion thereof intrigues me greatly. Saving Wikipedia articals[edit]

I am using windows 98se on a dialup conection.

Is there any way I can save articals to my HD in a folder of it's own ?

It works fine if I use "add to favorits" and

"make available off line", however it disapears in a few days and has to be reloaded.

This seems rather wastefull of connect time and

cost to the user, not to mention the unnessary load on the Wiki servers.

I've tried using the Windows "Save As" function,

but it often results in an "illeagle operation" err and I lose the page and it exits IE explorer.

I've also tried drag and drop from temp. internet

I believe there is a way to download a hard copy of Wikipedia to your computer as a standalone... of course, there are issues with this, such as the hard copy only being updated periodically (as in the articles will not be completely up to date) and the size (I believe it is 1.5 GB but it may be much much more at this point). I think it was created so Wikipedia could be uploaded to things like palm pilots and laptops so it could be used as an offline resource. The reason it needs to be reloaded even if you make it available offline is probably because someone has edited and changed it. If you click the "Printable version" link on the left it will take you to a page that would be easy to copy and paste into say MS Word. Logo[edit]

I used the logo= protocol to insert a logo and it still does not appear on the page for Aerolineas Internationales. A link appears. What am I doing wrong? The company provided the logo for use on Wikipedia. ~~Otooledupree 24 Dec. 2006

The code read .jpg.svg while the image was simply .jpg It was simply a typo. Also, I don't know what went wrong, but if you want to sign a post, all you have to type is four tildes (~). Searching the Internet for Paula Insel[edit]

My name is Vicki Lawrence, and I live in Pembroke Pines, Florida (U.S.A.)

I have spent the past three or four days on the Internet searching for Ms. Paula Insel, and through a link to Wipipedia this morning though a German web site, I was able to locate Paula Insel through the Gerhardt.fr web site where her work is currently shown.

I d not speak the German language, and, therefore, I am unable to find the link to any form of communication with the Gerhardt.fr web site; thus, I am writing to you in the hopes that you can help me locate and/or contact Ms. Insel, as she may be the only person who can guide me to a particular artist who, by Invitation, showed his works at her Gallery in New York City in December 1967.

The artist's name is Luis Peressol, who is of Venezuelan origin. His art reflected paintings of Old San Juan Puerto Rico (as well as others), and the Invitation to show his works at The Paula Insel Gallery in 1967 was downloaded to me from the Art/Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institute in the United States. Luis Peressol was a well known artist, teacher and mentor over 50 years ago. I own one of his original signed paintings which has been in my family for at least 40+ years.

If, per chance, Ms. Insel might recall this particular event with Luis Peressol in 1967, she may be my only connection to further communication with Mr. Peressol, as he and his works are extremely difficult to find on the Internet thus far.

I look forward to hearing from someone from your web site, hopefully, with a positive response as to how to effectively contact Paula Insel as I continue my search for Luis Peressol.

Are you sure about that gerhardt.fr link? As I speak German I had a look to see if I could help you out finding a contact link, but http://www.gerhardt.fr is a corporate website, apparently for Gerhardt Laboratory Systems' French subsidiary, nothing to do with art that I could see.

MoS info on the propriety of acronym article titles?[edit]

If I understand your question correctly, we would either move the page to the full title, or create a redirect at Atmospheric Neutral Density Experiment (i.e. create the page with #REDIRECT [[ANDE]]). Bot patrolling for cross-namespace redirects[edit]

Sometimes people create a page in namespace which is autobiographical but otherwise would be acceptable as a userpage. If that page is userfied by a move, there will be a redirect left behind. In the short term that is a convenience as it prevents the user from re-creating their article in mainsspace. In the long term however, it is a pollution of the main namespace. The "dismiss" link hides the current SiteNotice (the fundraising banner at the top of the window) by using a cookie on your computer. 2 years ago i created the first automatic song creator/singer, a freeware called "breathcube," which composes and plays music with words in real time.

algorithmic/procedural/stochastic music has a long history, eg. at least since pythagoras, but this is the first application as such.

i see many ways that culture can benefit from this technology, but the field is generally too esoteric to have generated much awareness.

i would like to create an article to create more awareness, synergise, and publicly record the accomplishment, however i am concerned that my effort may be deleted under the 'new research' clause.

Wikipedia doesn't create awareness of software or anything else; we only cover articles when they have already generated awareness. To cover something verifiably and neutrally we need non-trivial coverage from independent reliable sources. A page I created which was perfectly reasonable, citing references and filling all the necessary criteria is wikipedia now only accepting the internet as criteria?!), was deleted, and if the gentleman who did so doubts the factuality of my article, then I suggest they come to London and visit these prestigious gulds! The name of the page was Zeta 4. I would appreciate it very much if this problem could be rectified soon, as this has significantly reduced my enjoyment of Wikipedia. You can claim person X or company Y said something, but we need actual details: a website is easiest, but if there's written material, we need page numbers, titles, author names and ISBN/ISSN numbers. Changing IP addresses[edit]

I recieved this message from a user yesterday:

I have a questions, a while back I edit Z.O.E. site and forgot to log in and it it said my Ip address is 24.85.132.165. However today When I came into Wikipedia but before I logged in I received a warning message that belongs to another IP address called 64.59.144.22 insisting I vandal Shot Online ← Which I even didn't know such an articl exists and didn't even made any edits. Which I find really strange so I checked my IP and it said 192.168.1.100 yet Wikipedia thinks my address is 64.59.144.22 and it seems very strange now did Wikipedia made a mistake or did the user 64.59.144.22 hacked into my computer and changed my IP address to his/her. I just want to know how did could an IP address switch three times? Unfortunatly I don't know how to change my IP address. If you have time could you look further into the IP address 24.85.132.165, 64.59.144.22 and mine which is 192.168.1.100. I'm looking forward to hear a reply from you. Thanks! Some Internet Service Providers have a large pool of IP numbers and regularly switch them, not just when you log on but also during an internet session. If you didn't edit such a page, you can safely ignore the warning. It depends on what sort of internet connection you have, but usually if you really want to change it, you can switch off your computer and your router/modem etc at the power socket in the wall. Then when your turn it back on it will sign in with a new IP address. There are a few connection types (like cable I think) for which this doesn't work. Hope it helped, Merry Christmas! Does Cable connection changes its IP adress? I got cable, as for 24.85.132.165 I remember clearly was mine. That means my IP was change to 64.59.144.22, but the 64.59.144.22 user is still making edits on pages that I didn't do (except for the Zone of the Enders Chacters page which I did) I am the only in my house who edits. Cable connections can change their addresses, yes, but it usually doesn't happen. Both of the addresses you have listed (24.85... and 64.59...) are listed as belonging to Shaw Cable in Vancouver, but from my experience, shaw rarely switches IPs. It could be that it changed, or that you were working at different computers, each with its own ip....can't say exactly. The IP 192.168.1.100 is the IP your computer gets from your router, not the IP that the router gets from the internet. It is only visible from your local area network. The computer I'm working is the same computer I'm working for the last five years. So the cable company must have change the IP address from 24.85.132.165 for to 64.59.144.22 some reason. My questions is that is 64.59.144.22 a shared IP address, meaning it is connected and can be control by more than one computers? Because when I made edits to the Character of Z.O.E. I didn't log in to test what IP address it was. It showed 64.59.144.22 yet this IP made many distructive edits most of which were edits made during the times I was log on. Unless my computer is being hacked whch I checked many times already and it isn't. However who ever is trying to control 64.59.144.22 is getting out hand. No, Shaw doesn't use shared connections for cable modems. So if you were actually using the same IP as that person, there are a couple possibilities:

You have more than one computer connected to a router, and someone was using a different one of these.
Someone was using your computer, or controlling it via the internet. This one is extremely unlikely though.
You actually were the person making those changes.
You never actually edited from that IP, and a mistake was made on this end.

Regardless of which is the right answer, unless you keep getting more warnings since that first one, I wouldn't worry about it. If it comes to doing something about this vandal, the administrators have better tools available than I do, and so can probably unravel who made what edit without too much trouble. Becuase I just recieved a message saying that my IP address is 64.59.144.22 (Which was most likely change by shaw cable) and said that I was vandeling other users pages, I checked many of those edits which I did not do yet 64.59.144.22 seems to be vandling random pages. Someone was using your computer, or controlling it via the internet - Someone was using your computer means exactly that...there was a person sitting in your chair, using your computer. I assume you know that wasn't the case though. As for controlling it via the internet, it is very, very, unlikely that someone hacked your computer to vandalize wikipedia, so just ignore that one.
You have more than one computer connected to a router, and someone was using a different one of these - Between your cable modem and your computer, you probably have another device, one with a row of network plugs. That would be a router, and any other computer connected to that would get the same IP address as you.
