Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Bocoup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Join us at the Bocoup Loft for a fun day of improving Wikipedia's coverage of the open web and hacking on Wikipedia's API, javascript and Mediawiki extensions.

The event will be equal parts hackathon and editathon. We hope to support interested developers and users in building or improving cool things with Wikipedia and Mediawiki tools and we would like to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics relating to open source and the open web. We welcome anyone who wants to come and improve Wikipedia articles. If you're new to Wikipedia or to programming, drop by and we'll be happy to help you contribute.

Developers in any language are welcome to come. Mediawiki extensions are written in PHP, the new template system is designed to interpret Lua, the user styles and actions are Javascript and CSS and the API has bindings in Python and a number of other languages. So everyone is welcome!

Rules

[edit]

It can't be a Wikipedia event without a few rules! In this case we have only one:

  1. Absolutely no bikeshedding. When folks get together in person to talk about Wikipedia it is easy to get into extended discussions about why Policy X is bad or why Wikipedia needs to have coverage of Y. Those discussions are great but have no purpose at a hackathon. We're here to contribute and build things, not to argue.
