Guide: Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4

An Easy Guide To Assessment
If you are new to assessment in WikiProject India, this article should help you.

In Part 1 of the Guide, you learned about how to assess articles using the Wikiproject India talk page template and by filling in the two parameters - "class" and "importance". Part 2 of this Guide shows you how to add more functionality to the template while assessing an article. If this is incorporated, a single assessment becomes very useful for sorting and earmarking of articles by means of categories.

Adding value beyond the minimum[edit]

By adding the Wikiproject India template and filling in the two parameters "class" & "importance", you have done the minimum required as far as assessment goes. WikiProject templates are complex affairs and much more functionality has been added to the Templates. This is true for WikiProject India also.

WikiProject Task Forces[edit]

WikiProject India has many task forces. A task-force may be a separate WikiProject considered as a "daughter" wikiproject of WikiProject India or even a group within WikiProject India itself. An example of WikiProject Task Force is WikiProject Tamil Nadu which is both part of WikiProject India and separate in itself. Its scope is to look after all articles pertaining to Tamil Nadu.

If you add a parameter for the Task Force, it places this article in subsets of articles of WikiProject India which belong to that Task Force only, as we saw in the example above.[1]

Normally for each Task Force, we have a parameter which helps identify it, which may be referred to as identifier. For example, the task force identifier (or parameter) for Task Force Lakshadweep & Minicoy Islands is laksha while that for Rajasthan is rajasthan etc. This identifier is used to make two parameters that are used in the template, i.e. "task force identifier" & "task force identifer-importance".

  • By adding the parameter identifier=yes, the article gets included in the Task Force set of articles and the template also gets an additional entry which specifically says so. This also places the talk page of the article in four categories, three of which depend on the class and importance of the article (see Example 2 below).
  • The class/completeness of an article is taken from the parameter "class" itself. It does not change based on which Task Forces/WikiProjects an article belongs to.
  • However importance is always relative to the Task Force the article belongs to, so for each Task Force, a second parameter identifer-importance=value is also provided where value is "low", "mid", "high" or "top" as the case may be.

Example 1. The task force identifier for Madhya Pradesh Task Force is madhya. Adding a parameter such as madhya=yes will ensure the article talk page gets included in the Task Force. Adding another parameter, madhya-importance=low will ensure it gets categorised along with other articles of Task Force Madhya Pradesh of the same importance, i.e. "low". The class/completeness of an article is taken from the parameter "class" itself. For example, if the Madhya Pradesh article was assessed as "C-Class', then all the task forces inherit the same completeness/class.

Example 2. The article "Kathakali", being the most important dance form of Kerala, logically belongs to the state Task Force for Kerala. Also it is of "Top" importance to the people of the state. Hence if we add the extra wikitext kerala=yes|kerala-importance=top, then the template reads:

{{WikiProject India|class=B|importance=Mid|kerala=yes|kerala-importance=top}}

and it manifests as:

It also adds the following four additional categories to the talk page:

  • An additional parameter "pre" works along with "history". This is to be added to pre-independence articles; it changes flag image to a map of sub-continent if "pre=yes".

Template related parameters[edit]

Some of the parameters of the Wikiproject India template have a functional purpose related to the template itself and not that of sorting into task forces. These include the following parameters.

  • "class" & "importance" (already discussed in Part 1 of the Guide).
  • "pre" (dealt above along with "history").
  • "assess-date".
  • "auto".
  • "small".

parameter "assess-date"[edit]

This parameter gives the date when the article was last assessed. This parameter can be filled manually, but preferably it should be filled with a subst based code for month & year ("day" not required for matching the grammar of the notice on the template).

Recommended value for the parameter is as follows:

"assess-date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}"
WikiProject India template with "assess-date" set to "{{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}"
.

parameter "auto"[edit]

A large number of bots carry out repetitive tasks on Wikipedia pages. WikiProject templates typically have large pending lists of articles waiting to be assessed for quality and importance. One of the strategies to tackle this is to use a bot to examine each article on the unassessed list and update it using a method or algorithm. Projects which use bots to automatically assess and categorise articles use the parameter auto.

The bot assessing the WikiProject India articles (usually TinucherianBot) checks the main article to see if a stub template has been used. If it detects a stub template than it replaces the unassessed quality parameter, i.e. class= with class=stub.

The bot after assessment of the article adds the following parameter to the project template: |auto=yes.

This triggers the display of a small notice that the article was tagged by a bot rather than a human. An example can be seen below.

WikiProject India template with parameter "auto" set to "yes".

A human will need to review the tagged pages, and make sure the article is a stub. If the article is not a stub (i.e. a case of false positive), the human reviewer will need change the classification and remove the auto parameter. The auto parameter should always be removed after a review.

parameter "small"[edit]

WikiProject India template on a talk page with parameter "small" set to "yes". Also sets categories (not shown here).

The parameter "small" if set to "yes" (i.e. small=yes) creates a compact form of the talk page template. This compact form is aligned right and does not take over the complete top margin. The wikitext for this is:

{{WikiProject India|small=yes}}

The template appears like this on a talk page. However, should this short template be placed on a page which is NOT a talk page, the template will give an error message.

WikiProject India template with parameter "small" set to "yes" but not placed on a talk page, resulting in the accompanying error message.
WikiProject India template (on a page other than article talk) with parameter "small" set to "yes" & parameter "category" set to "no".

To correct this, add an extra parameter "categories=no" which will allow the categories to be suppressed, and the error message to be suppressed and for the shortened template to appear normal again.

{{WikiProject India|small=yes|categories=no}}

Action needed parameters[edit]

The following parameters indicate that action of some kind is necessary.

  • orphan
  • needs-infobox
  • map-needed
  • image-needed
  • attention

parameter "orphan"[edit]

If an article has not been assigned a Task Force (or workgroup), and you feel it should be affiliated to one but are not able to identify the task force, then adding the parameter "orphan=yes" will cause a warning notice to appear in the template which says:

"This article is not assigned to a workgroup. Please help with your suggestions." It also adds articles to Category:India articles without a WikiProject.

Once you find that the article has been added to a Task Force/Working Group of WikiProject India, please remove this text.

parameter "needs-infobox"[edit]

Example of an infobox

Infobox templates are templates that provide standardized information across related articles. Infoboxes are now standard elements in the recommended layout/structure of articles in most WikiProjects. For example, WikiProject_Biography offers a range of infoboxes, at least one of which is expected to adorn the article.

WikiProject India does not mandate the presence of an infobox on behalf of the WikiProject but it strongly recommends that infoboxes as applicable as per the other WikiProjects having jurisdiction over the article should be added. In fact, a feature supports this aim.

If an article needs an infobox, then the parameter "needs-infobox" should be set to "yes". It adds a notice to the template saying "The article has been marked as needing an infobox". It also adds the talk page to Category:India articles without infoboxes.

If the infobox has already been added/is present, the line should be removed.

parameter "map-needed"[edit]

Some articles need maps, especially if they are geographic in nature. The parameter "map-needed" is provided for this purpose. If you notice that an image needs a map, please add the text "|map-needed = yes". It adds articles to Category:Wikipedia requested maps in India.

If you find that it already has a map/no longer needs one and this parameter is present, then please remove this line.

parameter "image-needed"[edit]

This parameter – "image-needed" – needs to be set to "yes" if the article needs pictures, otherwise remove this line. It adds articles to Category:Wikipedia_requested_photographs_in_India.

Sometimes an article may not be categorised to a task force but as an editor doing cleanup or image sorting, you may like to "force" an image into a category without using the Task Force parameters. Another parameter in is used in conjunction with the image-needed parameter to place the image request into a specific Indian location.

For example, if the "image-needed=yes" parameter exists, then the "in=Tripura" will place the article talk page into Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Tripura. You may choose to leave the parameter in blank or delete it in case there is no need to force such membership.

If more than one forcing is needed, then the in2 and in3 parameters used in conjunction with the image-needed parameter may be used to specify up to three total location categories.

parameter "attention"[edit]

The parameter "attention" should be set to "yes" if the article requires immediate attention of any kind. It adds a notice stating "This article has been marked as needing immediate attention". It also adds the talk page to the category India articles needing attention. This parameter should be used sparingly.

parameter "reassess"[edit]

The parameter "reassess" should be set to "yes" if the article requires reassessment. It adds a notice stating "This article has been marked for reassessment". It also adds the talk page to the category India articles needing reassessment. Not needed for this drive unless you're unsure about your assessment.

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ Note 1. In many cases, Task Forces are daughter projects of Wikiproject India or even other WikiProjects.
  2. ^ Note 2. We request WikiProject Members to please not start new projects for their cities. Please use your state WikiProjects for that as it will get weakened if we focus on our individual villages, towns and cities.
  3. ^ Note 3. WikiProject Kolkata exists as a defunct WikiProject which WikiProject West Bengal will shortly decide the fate of.
