Spelling... May want to make sure there's agreement

Hello, I've noticed the growth of Azeri-related articles on Wikipedia (great), and I've also noticed a problem common when you take names out of one alphabet and covert them into another... The name I've noticed this with is "Yusuf ibn Kuseyir" or "Yusif ibn Kuseyir" depending on what article it is. There's not article on this individual (or the associated tomb) yet, so right now it's a little spotty on which is "correct" (obviously, there will be a number of redirects of alternative spellings no matter what you ultimately decide). Just thought I'd mention it as something to keep in mind with this and other projects. I had the same problem cleaning up an article on a Turkish article on Perili Kosk/Perili Kösk/Perili Köşk (all considered different). I speak none of these languages so it makes it complicated for those of us who want to beef up the articles through research. Happy editing! Bobak 16:33, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

I am working on the articles on Shirvanshahs history and Azeri khanates of 18 century....have a lot of images, but not scanned... will be nice if you can let me know of all historical images associated with 1) famous people of Azerbaijan 2) famous building of Azerbaijan. Check Wikicommons for images, related to Azerbaijan. Some images of Icheri Sheher and Palace of Shirvanshahs are available here [1]. I recommend everybody to setup an account in Commons and upload there all new images, so that they could be used in Wikipedia in other languages without the need to reupload them. One more lesson on image tags

If you ever upload something you've taken, you still need to add a licensing tag (in addition to anything else). If you want people to have to cite you as the source if they use the photo off of Wikipedia, I suggest the Creative Commons 2.5 license, which can be added by putting this tag on the photos you upload: {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} (If you want to see an example, I've personally used it on all my Wikipedia photos). New Category: Universities in Azerbaijan

I'm fascinated by higher education, and I noticed there aren't any articles on universities in Azerbaijan, so I've created the new subcategory Category:Universities and colleges in Azerbaijan and placed a few new stubs. As you may know, to add a category, all you need to do is past a link like [[Category:Universities and colleges in Azerbaijan]] at the bottom of the article and it's automatically alphabetized on the corresponding category page for you. I guess this means I'm joining this WikiProject...(for the record, I'm Persian) -- Bobak 01:09, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

I started the above two, now I want to move onto Azerbaijan Technical University, unfortunately there seems to be a problem with the Azerbaijan Technical University's website, which is currenly stated as "Notice: This domain name expired on 03/12/06 and is pending renewal or deletion" [3]. Did someone forget to pay the internet bill or is it even there anymore? Thankfully I can work from the Google cache file. I just hope I won't have to add an edit to the effect that "the school closed in 2006". Can anyone confirm its still there without the website? -- Bobak 20:25, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Looks like only one important university is missing, the Azerbaijan State University of Arts. Academy of Fine Arts is a new university, which was created on the basis of the corresponding faculty of the University of Arts. Grandmaster 18:08, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

University info II

I've gone in and added infoboxes to the largest articles (BSU, ASOA, Western, Khazar, ADU), but I've also noticed the following issues that I was hoping someone could help with (the first few are easy translation issues):

  • I would like the Azeri translation of Azerbaijan University of Languages, particularly because the school's logo is "ADU" which begs the question regarding the Azeri translation. Ironically, the Language University's website does not have it's Azeri spelling. If you find it, please add it after the name in the main article body (you can use the new template that was added) as well as add it to the infobox unter "native name"
  • I have the same translation request for Azerbaijan Technical University, however their website has gone completely bonkers.
  • Baku State University didn't put the number of students it has on its website, Azerbaijan State Oil Academy didn't put the number of students or faculty... if anyone can find out that would be appreciated.
  • as you'll notice in the edit mode, the infoboxes have lots of empty spaces that can be filled as people get information.

Azerbaijan University of Languages translates as Azərbaycan Dillər Universiteti, and Azerbaijan Technical University translates as Azərbaycan Texniki Universiteti. I will add the names to the respective articles. The complete list of Azerbaijani educational institutions can be found here: [4] It’s indeed ironic that the University of languages doesn’t have their name included in their native language. An anon user added the new, working AzTU website address (www.aztu.az, no longer .org), and I was able to add the infobox. Alas the school doesn't appear to have a seal or even a logo so its infobox is a little "naked" --but its a marked improvement. The funniest part about the new website is a poll they include on the first page asking about the new website: the final choice is "The main thing, that it exists". I know someone who's family taught there --apparently they never did. I guess engineers are too busy to waste time with pretty drawing (kidding). Maybe we should make one for them. Indeed, excellent idea for a sport team name. :) Someone needs to bring that to their attention. Btw, both my parents graduated from this university. I don’t think they don’t have a logo, but I have no idea why it’s not on their website. Probably they forgot to update it since Soviet times and still have communist stars on it. Iravan Khanate

Very little information can be found on the history of Iravan khanate its rulers and policies between 1747 and 1828. Have only scattered figures on population of Iravan. Armenians do not include it in the History of Armenia for obvious reasons. Very controversial but important topic. Anyone willing to help? Abdulnr 15:07, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Yes I agree with you Baku87, that old map shows Nagorno-Karabakh region, most people dont know what that is or means, so its confussing people. Ah, it's great you both agree on this map, but do you actually believe your own words? Do you think that "most people" who are interested in Azerbaijan don't know what Karabakh is? Do you really believe that seeing a region outlined on a map will "confuse" people? A map is all about showing the borders of regions! Frankly, I would say that many people who look at an Azerbaijan map will *specifically* be interested to know what Karabakhs borders are. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but it looks to me like you're trying to erase the region. More importantly, you are I'm sure against the secession of Karabakh from Azerbaijan - but do you actually think that by renaming their cities, erasing their borders, blocking Armenians of any citizenship from visiting Azerbaijan, etc, etc, etc, you will really ever convince the Armenians of Karabakh that they can return to Azeri rule (even with autonomy) and trust you to not have their rights completely trampled? It seems to me you are so absolutely focused on some web/virtual/PR "victory", that like your government, you have lost sight of what should be your actual goal... to convince the Armenians that they WANT to and CAN stay in Azerbaijan. Otherwise you're just convincing us that you don't want a single Armenian to remain there - or indeed perhaps anywhere. Why am I bothering to write this? I suppose on the off-chance that you'll see things from a slightly different point of view, that you'll stop approaching everything as a battle, and hopefully even see that I am saying these things in the hope that we can better see eye-to-eye - both on wikipedia, and in the world... --RaffiKojian 04:54, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Question on the Abşeron Peninsula/rayon

I asked this on the discussion page of the Abşeron rayon, but I might as well write it here since this is the home of the Azerbaijan experts: Should articles on the peninsula and the rayon be separated?This article spends its time talking about the history and origin of the peninsula, but the map shows that the rayon barely touches the geographic feature due to the size of the Baku and Sumgait territories.

I have made the image to the right highlighting of just the peninsula. I was about to create its own article, but then I realized there would be nothing left in this article if I did. Any suggestions? -- Bobak 17:17, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Well I am a huge fan of Neftchi, been to more then 20 of their games and I dont even life in Azerbaijan, so I'll take proudly take on the Neftchi article! By the way dont you guys notice that Neftchi is playing so damn good lately? I mean since 2005 Neftchi has been like a unstoppable rocket, if we keep this up then Im sure we can play in the world cup in 2010. They kinda play like Brazilians in the center, quick passes, thats so awesome man. I have been supporting Neftchi more then 10 years now and I can tell you they have never played this good before. This noticeboard is a excellent idea, but if we keep on adding then in no time this project will be overloaded, so Im guessing its only temporarily. Thats why I think we should make some sort of a stub for all Azeri related articles, so we can always track back the articles? Grandmaster what do you think of the idea to create 'Picture of The Week' in this project? We have a large space available at the top of the page and we need to fill that up with something like 'Picture of The Week'.
Also another idea is to create 'Member of The Month' and to award a medal to that person if achieved, I personal would like to see something like this, I think it will motivate us even further. Sorry, just noticed this post. I think it’s a good idea to place a new picture on the project page every week. As for medal, you can give it out yourself, but it dos not have to be on a weekly or monthly basis, just when you feel that someone deserved it, you can award him a barnstar. Iğdır-Kars Azeri Turkish community

If you think it will be of interest, I can sketch out an article on the Azerbaijani Turkish Community in Turkey (I am not quite sure how it could be titled best). There are Turks of Azerbaijani origin all over Turkey (my doctor in İzmir:), but in Iğdır and Kars they form a community. Many villages are known to be Azeri villages and so on. Therefore the article could be centered on those people with additional info on Azeris living elsewhere. Just an idea. :) --Cretanforever 11:15, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Newest project member

Hello - since this project is open, and I contribute to a lot of Azerbaijan related articles, I decided to join. My primary interest, as most of you know is those things which relate to Armenians. I want to add more information on whatever presence and history Armenians have had in Azerbaijan, which I hope all of you can find interesting as well, and enriching to the articles. If you look at the pages of the Armenia Guidebook I co-authored, you will see a great deal of information on the history and presence of Azerbaijanis across Armenia - from village to village. Some of it would be useful as a source for articles on this site. I hope you can see I am not afraid of the truth on either side, that my Karabakh War Timeline includes Khojali and that I just want to make sure history and the truth is fairly told and presented. I really hope article development here becomes more of a collaboration than a battle, and wish there were more third party quality materials/references, but anyway, just trying to do my part. --RaffiKojian 04:15, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

I think it would be more interesting for you to join the armenian wikipedia project, like you said your interest are with armenia not azerbaijan. im not urging you to not join this project but i dont think you have the same interests as the other members. Welcome to the Azeri Wikiproject. Indeed, this project is open for all users who want to make a positive contribution to the articles about Azerbaijan, and we have people of different ethnicities here, such as Azeri (both republic of Azerbaijan and Iranian Azerbaijan), Persian, Turkish and Russian. I think many members of Wikiproject Armenia are de-facto members of our Wikiproject, same as many members of this project are de-facto members of Wikiproject Armenia, because all the articles about Azerbaijan-Armenia relations and the history of the region are results of the joint efforts of the members of these two Wikiprojects. If you feel the need to formally sign up to our Wikiproject, there’s no problem. I hope your participation will help to improve the quality of the articles about our region. To tell you the truth, I did not feel so far that there was any desire by certain people in Wikiproject Armenia to acknowledge the role of the Azeri people in the history of Armenia, but I hope soon that will change too. I understand you want to unite Azerbaijan with Iran and you are entitled to this but its your opinion and you cant force us into this as most of Azeris enjoy their independence. Also the correct name is Azeri is announced with a combination of e+a, if you announce it like Azari then your announcing it wrong, in Azeri latin we have the letter ə from this problem, which is a combination of a+e, so only in Azeri latin its written correctly, I think the best options is to write with e, because then less confusion will occur. Another thing is please stop adding your own userbox about uniting Azerbaijan and Iran, as almost nobody in the wikiproject supports it, and its not even a userbox yet. You added your name into the participation list and I hope you will indeed participate in Azeri related articles, if you need a article to start off with please see this list. WHat do you mean 'most of us prounce it with e+a,' actually most Azaris are in Iran and we prounce it with a. So do not say that. In order to answer the question you asked on my talk page, User:72..., the issue you appear to be involved with appears to be one of variant spelling only. Generally, on non-US/UK topics it is considered best to leave the spelling as the first revision stated, to avoid problems such as these. For example the word cat, you write it with A but you announce with E, the same is with the letter Ə, only this is a combination of A+E and in order to prevent confussion we use the letter E in latin. I do sympathize. If this person's activities are bringing Wikipedia, of which this WikiProject is a small but important part, into disrepute, then if he doesn't stop administrator sanctions may be applied. It could be that he's quite new and just needs to be enlightened as to the way in which Wikipedia works (I don't know it that's true, just mentioning it in case it hasn't been tried yet). In any case we definitely don't have to just sit around while an editor drags things down. First off, no one ever objected to placement of Liberated Azerbaijan userbox on this page. It was made as a response to userbox User supports independence of Nagorno-Karabakh and was a reference to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan republic. Both of those userboxes are now deleted by the admins. I personally never supported political userboxes and never placed them on my user page. Glaring omission in the history section of Baku

I know this is an area that any of you native Azeris could write in your sleep: the oil boom years around the turn of the 19th/20th century. So much interesting stuff that I wish I knew well enough to add. That’s not accurate, he made his money mostly on dynamite, but his brothers made their wealth here, in Baku. Ludvig Nobel was the one who ran the Nobel's company in Baku. Alfred had his share of interest in Baku oil too, and according to the article about Ludvig 12% of the money Alfred left for the Nobel Prizes came from his shares in Nobel's Baku oil business. Maps

I'm the chap who made all of the maps on the Subdivisions of Azerbaijan (one example: Image:Azerbaijan-Kalbajar.png). I have a few questions:

  1. Do y'all have any comments about them?
  2. Is my map in Azeri: Image:Azerbaijan districts azeri.png - correct?
  3. I notice none of my maps are in use on the Azeri wikipedia; do you think they would be more likely to do so if I made versions of my maps without Nagorno-Karabakh indicated?

I'd ask 2 and 3 on the Azeri wikipedia but they don't seem to have an English embassy, so I ask y'all here. Hope to hear back. :)

I have tried to speak up in defense of your much more useful maps, but without luck. They are replacing your maps with their POV maps which leave out completely the defacto existence of this region which declared itself seperate from Azerbaijan in what is argueably a legal manner, and have never allowed a discussion or a vote which would certainly turn out against their favor. Feel free to go back and replace the less useful maps with your own, since most users (including Azeris) I am quite certain would prefer to know where the new administrative borders overlap with the old, when it comes to Karabakh. --RaffiKojian 04:01, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

To anyone interested in or knowledgable on the subject, I've tagged the "Works" section in the Fuzûlî article with an original research dispute tag. Though (or perhaps because) I wrote the section myself, I've realized that it needs references and support for its claims; without them, it's definitely original research.

Please, tell him to stop what he is doing. Something Peculiar

There is something very peculiar that needs immediate attention. Going through some articles, I notice that people who were born in the region known today as the R. of Azerbaijan, along with historical events, and generally geographically, the name Azerbaijan/Azerbaijani is mentioned. That is incorrect. The R. of Azerbaijan did not exist until 1918. We need to fix this false information, as it is highly misleading.
This is like saying Heraclius was Turkish, or Ramses the Great was Arab, or the Native Americans were Americans (as in USA).Khosrow II 00:33, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Azerbaijan has had several different names in history, such as: Athropathne, Arran, Guberia Provencis, Azerbaijan SSR, Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, and more. To keep things simple and less confusing we must refer them as 1 thus Azeris or Azerbaijanis. What you rather need to fix is division of ethnic groups in Iran. Everyone in Iran is Iranian but you can devide that in ethnic groups as: Azeris, Persian, Kurds, Baloch, Arabs and others. List of Iranian is like Great Briton and thus should look like it. Look at these two article below and you will understand what I mean.

Also there are more Azeris in Iran then Armenians and yet there no subheadline as the Armenians do have in List of Iranian (refering to Famous Armenians of Iran and no Famous Azeris of Iran). Please see that this major problem get fixed Baku87 17:08, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

No, Iranian Azerbaijan has been called Atropatane, Azerpadegan, and currently Azerbaijan. The R. of "Azerbaijan" has either been called Albania, Armenia, Georgia, or Arran. The R. of "Azerbaijan" was given its name by pan Turkists who wanted to steal northern Iran. Rasulzadeh, the person who helped found the R. of "Azerbaijan", later wrote, in his exile, that he had made a mistake and that they should have called the nation Albania. He also said that he would do everything in his power to stop discontent amongst Iranians over the name. Also, recent unclassified Soviet documents show how the Soviets kept the name Azerbaijan after the conquered the republic so that they could create a communist state in northern Iran. The documents reveal how Soviet officials told the leaders of Azerbaijan SSR to create movements within northern Iran, to rewrite history, and to spread propaganda. But I guess this is the stuff they dont tell you about in the R. of "Azerbaijan". Also, did you know that the leaders of Iranian Azerbaijan changed the name to Azadistan for awhile protesting the fact that pan Turks had changed the name of Arran to Azerbaijan in 1918? The R. of "Azerbaijan" and Iranian Azerbaijan are two completely different things and territories.
Also, please give me the link to the famous Armenians page and I will make sure that that is also fixed, however, that isnt the same as the situation here. Armenians in Iran and Armenia are the same people while Azerbaijani's in the republic and Iranian Azerbaijani's, the real Azerbaijani's, are not the same people. Also you might also wanna change this article titel aswell: List of famous Persian women to List of famous Iranian women, not all female in that list are Persians but they are Iranians. This way people would understand the concept of Iranian and Persian much easier. The difference between Iranian and Persian is even confusing for some members of wikipedia. The UK excists out of 4 nations, Iran has about 4 major minorities aswell. If you still dont understand then I suggest we test it out in List of Iranians, I'll edit it just like the UK version. Somehow I feel the logo used in the userboxes and the project notices should be changed, the main reason being that it's too similar to Wikimedia's logo and therefore can't be released into the public domain. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007.
