Dedication of the Great Buddha (大仏開眼, Daibutsu kaigen) is a 1952 Japanese film directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa. It was entered into the 1953 Cannes Film Festival.[1]
Plot
It is about the grand event in Japanese history, of the conscreation of the Great Mahavairochana Buddha of Nara in the year 752 amidst Fujiwara no Hirotsugu rebellion, which has also been recorded in Shoku Nihongi. The Tale of Conscreation of the Great Buddha of Nara has also been adapted into one-shot taiga drama special remake by NHK in 2010 featuring an all-star cast including Ishihara Satomi. As well as the tale has been the theme of Karma chapter of the manga Phoenix (manga) by Tezuka Osamu which has been subsequently adapted to anime OVA in 1987.
