Walter Keane was the husband of Margaret Keane, American artist working in San Francisco. He made fame as a painter who, together with his wife, produced a large number of kitsch paintings, characterized by large-eyed waifs.[1] Keane, who habitually referred to himself in the third person, took special pride in the eyes, which were part of the reason for his commercial success, but in 1970, his then former wife claimed that she had actually painted the eyes in those paintings.[2][3] Losing a law suit, he was ordered to pay her $4 million.[4]
