Attacks
According the Israeli military, early on Monday February 12, they conducted a wave of air strikes in Gaza as a diversion in a successful rescue attempt of two hostages taken by Hamas on the October 7 2023 attacks in Israel. Up until this point, no hostages had been rescued by Israel through military means.

The air strikes in Rafah started approximately at the same time as the Super Bowl in the United States. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 67 Palestinians were killed by the bombs. According to the Palestine Red Crescent Society, over 100 Palestinians were killed by both the bombs and Israeli machine gun fire along the border of Rafah.

Some of the targets of the Israeli air strikes included two mosques and about a dozen homes, according to the Rafah municipality.

The event coincided with Super Bowl LVIII in the United States. During and after the attacks, the hashtag #SuperBowlMassacre began trending on X. The Israeli government also bought an advertisement named "Bring All Dads Home" in the Super Bowl to promote their views on the Israel-Hamas War in Gaza. According to the head of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Abed Ayoub, over 10,000 people complained to the Federal Communications Commission about the advertisement because it did not contain proper disclosures and information that it was paid for by a foreign government.

U.S. President Joe Biden "reaffirmed" a stance that the Israeli ground operation in Rafah should not proceed, but did not call for a ceasefire or a return to negotiations. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk demanded an immediate ceasefire to prevent further atrocities.

Dave Zirin wrote an article for The Nation calling the 2024 Super Bowl a "weapon of mass distraction," and mentioned the Israeli advertisement during the Super Bowl "looked more like military synergy than happenstance."<blockquote>If there's any justice, future generations will remember the game not for Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, or Taylor Swift but for the US-funded attacks on Palestinian civilians that occurred while so many Americans were glued to their TVs.</blockquote>Leveraging the successful rescue, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that "enough" hostages remained to justify continuing military operations. Until this point in the conflict, no hostages had been successfully rescued via military means.

U.S. Representative Jamaal Bowman took to X to state:<blockquote>While we watched the Super Bowl, Netanyahu launched a wave of attacks and killed innocent civilians in Rafah – a place where many refugees fled for relative safety – despite warnings from Biden</blockquote>
