A postal village or post-village (p.v., P.V.,[1] PV or p-v) is generally a community, settlement, or hamlet that has a post office. The term is in use in several English-speaking countries and has been in use since at least the 1800s.

Definition and abbreviation

The term "post village" refers to a small community (a village) which has a post office.[2] The definition is similar to that of "postal town": "a town having a main post office branch".[3]

The term is used in several English-speaking countries, but in India, it has been defined as being different than other types of villages (such as revenue or census villages), being designated for mail delivery.[4]

When referring to postal villages, the abbreviation PV or p.v. has sometimes been used. Webster's 1896 Collegiate Dictionary explained this as standing for "post-village".[5]

History

An early usage of the term "post village" in England was the May 19, 1818, issue of the London Times.[6] An early usage of the term "post village" in the United States is in the July 27, 1825, Delhi Delaware Gazette, in which the community of Lockport, New York is referred to as a post village.[7] In Australia, an early use of the term "post village" appears in the July 10, 1845, issue of the Port Phillip Patriot and Melbourne Advertiser.[8] In New Zealand, the term "postal village" appears in the May 12, 1887, issue of the Auckland Star when referring to the American settlement of Monterey, California,[9] in those years a community of under 2,000 residents.

This term seems to have been most common in the latter half of the 19th century when it was in common use in maps and gazetteers,[note 1] although it is still in use today.
