Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is a 2023 spy action comedy film directed by Guy Ritchie, and written by Ritchie, Ivan Atkinson, and Marn Davies. The film stars Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, and Hugh Grant.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre was theatrically released in international territories on January 4, 2023.

Plot

A gang of Ukranian mafiosi manage to steal a device known as "The Handle": while the device's function is unknown, it is deduced that it must be important, as it has been priced in billions of dollars. The British government hires private contractor Nathan Jasmine to retrieve the Handle before billionaire arms dealer Greg Simmonds can sell it to the highest bid. Nathan hires super-spy Orson Fortune to lead a team formed by Sarah Fidel, JJ Davies and others.

The team travels to Madrid, where they seek the courier meant to transport the hard drive containing the data on the Handle. Their attempt is waylaid by the intervention of Mike, a fellow private contractor who appears to have been hired by another party to retrieve the Handle. Orson and JJ manage to strike down Mike's team and take the courier away, but he suffers a heart attack and dies before he can tell them the entire code: Sarah manages to copy the hard drive's contents before Mike steals it.

Learning that Simmonds plans to host a charity gala in Cannes, the team decides to infiltrate it by blackmailing Simmonds' favorite movie star, Danny Francesco, into helping them, with Sarah acting as Danny's girlfriend. While Simmonds is distracted with Danny and Orson deals with another of Mike's men, Sarah tries to get close to Simmonds' phone so JJ can clone it, allowing the team to follow what the arms dealer does. Simmonds offers Danny to spend some time in his Turkish villa in Antalya. Orson infiltrates the Ukranian mafiosi house in the city to hack their computers, disguising it as a robbery. The British government calls Nathan to warn him that the Handle is a very advanced artificial intelligence that can be programmed to defeat any security system in the world. Learning through the computers that the exchange for the Handle will take place in Antalya, the team travels to Turkey.

While Simmonds shows Danny his memorabilia, Orson and JJ track down one of Simmonds' moles in the Turkish government, noticing that Mike's men are following said mole: when the latter leaves a newspaper on a table that is later picked up by Simmonds' right-hand man, Ben Harris, Orson follows the latter while JJ helps him track the man. After a long persecution, Harris attacks Orson, who accidentally kills him by throwing him off a tower. Given that Harris was meant to represent Simmonds at the exchange, Orson replaces Harris, with Sarah using a computer program to disguise Orson's voice to hoodwink Simmonds.

The exchange goes awry when Orson is recognized by one of the Ukrainian guards from the robbery in Cannes. While Danny and Sarah escape Simmonds' villa before Simmonds learns what they have been doing, Mike attacks the exchange, killing everyone but Orson and stealing the Handle: Orson survives thanks to JJ, and the two take a helicopter to help Danny and Sarah.

Nathan tells the team that Mike was not hired by any government: a third party contracted him to steal the Handle. Lacking knowledge about the buyer, Orson suggests to speak with Simmonds: in spite of the problems the team has caused to him, Simmonds is willing to help, telling them that the buyers were Arnold and Trent, two bio-tech moguls who intend to use the Handle to cause a worldwide financial collapse, while they become richer through their ownership of large quantities of gold, which would become the world's only stable economic asset.

Simmonds and Danny go confront Arnold, Trent, and Mike in Arnold and Trent's headquarters, while Orson infiltrates the place with support from Sarah and JJ. After Simmonds and Danny leave, Mike tells his men to kill Arnold and Trent, starting a shoot-out that ends with nearly everyone dead. Orson manages to retrieve the Handle and beats Mike.

The team follows Nathan to Doha, where the latter offers them another job, only for them to decide to go on vacation, and Orson reveals he's used the proceeds from the robbery at the Ukranians' villa to finance Danny's new film, where he plays a fictionalized version of Greg Simmonds.[2][3]

Cast

Production

The screenplay was written by Ivan Atkinson, Marn Davies, and Ritchie.[4] Produced by Miramax, the project will be distributed by STXfilms.[4][5] In December 2020, Aubrey Plaza joined the cast.[6] In January 2021, the cast was rounded out with Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone and Josh Hartnett in supporting roles.[7][8][9][10] In February 2021, Hugh Grant joined the cast.[11]

Principal photography commenced on January 14, 2021, with filming taking place in Antalya, Turkey, Farnborough and Qatar.[7][12] Previously known as Five Eyes, the film was officially renamed Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre in September 2021.[2]

Release

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre was scheduled to be released by STX Entertainment.[13][14] It was originally scheduled for release on January 21, 2022, and March 18, 2022.[3][15] On February 18, 2022, the film was pulled from the release schedule without comment by the studio.[16] Reports indicate the film was pulled from release, not due to the COVID-19 pandemic as before, but because it featured gangsters of Ukrainian nationality as the main antagonist Greg Simmonds' henchmen. The film's producers thought it would be of bad taste, in light of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War sparking global outrage, for the movie to present "Ukrainian baddies".[17] In November 2022, amid STX's restructuring, it was reported that the film would likely be released domestically through a streaming service,[18] while its international distributors would still proceed with releasing the film theatrically, which began on January 4, 2023.[19]

Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes it has an approval rating of 69% based on reviews from 16 critics.[20][21]
