gehōbako (外法箱, Occult Box) is a traditional miko tool[1]. Itako use them frequently.[2].[3]: 180 [4]: 66 

Itako typically carry several artifacts. These include the "box outside of Buddhist law" (外法箱, gehobako), a box which contains secret items representative of a protective spirit, or kami.[3]: 180 [4]: 66

Etymology

(Gehō [ja], “outer path (Tīrthika)”) +  (hako, “box, casket, case”).

Definition

A supernatural 'box', that contains paraphernalia, such as dolls, animal and human skulls, etc., kept in a Shinto shrine.[1]
