The Virginia Tech Massacre was a school massacre that occurred on April 16, 2007 on the premises of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, more commonly known as Virginia Tech, at Blacksburg in the U.S. state of Virginia. At least 21 people were killed, with some reports as being as high as 32[6], with at least 29 injured,[5] making it the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.[7]

The first shooting occurred around 7 a.m. EDT at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a coed dormitory, that houses 895 students, where one person was killed. Shooting was continued in a classroom at Norris Hall, an engineering building.[5][8] It appears earlier reports that the police arrested one suspected gunman were false, instead the gunman was reported dead, apparently by suicide, in press conference later.[9][10]

News reports indicated that the gunman used two 9mm handguns News reports indicated that the gunman used two handguns and a legally imported South African DAO-12 shotgun, before turning a gun on himself.

Two students were injured after they panicked and jumped out an upper-story window.[5]

All classes for the day and the following day were cancelled and students were instructed to stay inside away from windows.

The event claimed more lives than the 13 killed in the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, as well as the 15 killed from the University of Texas tower in 1966, making it the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. The death toll may exceeed the Luby's massacre of 1991, and make it the biggest single-incident shooting in U.S. history, in or out of a school.
