Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch are a professional wrestling tag team in World Wrestling Entertainment, currently wrestling on the RAW brand, where they are the reigning World Tag Team Champions.

Career

Starting out

In August of 2005, both Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch were "called up" from World Wrestling Entertainment's "developmental system" Ohio Valley Wrestling to the main RAW roster and wrestled dark matches with the team name TNT.[3][4]

On the August 22, 2005 edition of RAW, a vignette was shown showcasing the new tag team of Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch.[5] Cade and Murdoch were seen in a bar setting, portraying redneck characters with Cade playing the role of a smooth-talking cowboy, while Murdoch was depicted as being an angry Southern trucker.view

Cade and Murdoch had their in ring debut on RAW on September 5 2005, defeating World Tag Team Champions, Hurricane and Rosey in a non-title match.[6] The win earned them a title shot at Unforgiven, which they won after Murdoch delivered an Elevated DDT to The Hurricane on the outside of the ring causing him to (kayfabe) suffer a stinger.[7] They held the title for 6 weeks until November's Taboo Tuesday event, where they lost to the team of Kane and The Big Show, who were left over from the main event selections.[8]

Break up

Cade and Murdoch wrestled what turned out to be their final match as a tag team on November 13 (aired November 18), when they lost an inter-promotional match against SmackDown!s Legion of Doom (Road Warrior Animal and Heidenreich).[9] Two weeks later, on the November 28 RAW, Joey Styles announced in his play-by-play that Cade and Murdoch had broken up their team. In a WWE.com Unlimited segment from the show Murdoch explained that he was shifting his focus to the Intercontinental Championship[10]

After the break up Murdoch received a small push and became the WWE.com Unlimited "movie critic" view, while Cade debuted a new "Refined Southern Gentleman" gimmick and nickname. Though the team had quietly split up they remained "allies" and were often seen together in backstage segments.[11] Separately they often challenged members of other tag team in singles matches and started aiding each other in matches and feuding with the team of Goldust and Gene Snitsky.[12]

Reunited

On the April 14, 2006 edition of Heat Cade & Murdoch were again announced as a tag team.[13] They wrestled together again for the first time on the May 19 Heat in a win over Charlie Haas and Viscera.view In the next few months the team racked up a number of wins on Heat, while appearing on Unlimited, cutting promos stating their intentions on winning the Tag Team Title back. Later in the year the two began appearing as "hired guns" for various superstars, including The McMahons (Vince and Shane) and Edge, mostly against D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels).[14][15]

In April 2007, after narrowly losing a chance to win the World Tag Team Championship to The Hardys (Matt and Jeff)[16], Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch began a quest to recapture the titles. After losing to the Hardys again at Backlash they started a gimmick where they were depicted as supreme sportsman, lavishing the Hardys with compliments when they performed guest commentary during their matches and wrestling in overly an clean fashion, a stark contrast to before. The team of Cade and Murdoch appeared to make a face turn when they showed respect for Hardys. They then had a rematch at Judgment Day, but lost once again. On the May 28, 2007 episode of Raw, Cade and Murdoch teamed up with The Hardys to defeat the team of Kenny Dykstra, Johnny Nitro and The World's Greatest Tag Team.

During the June 4, 2007 edition of Raw, Cade and Murdoch defeated The Hardys to become two-time World Tag Team Champions after Jeff Hardy missed a Swanton Bomb, allowing Cade to pin him for the win. During the pin, Jeff had his foot on the bottom rope, however, Murdoch pushed it off. Following the match, Matt Hardy confronted Cade and Murdoch about Jeff's foot being on the bottom rope. Cade and Murdoch both denied his foot being on the bottom rope and then they both assaulted Matt and Jeff, hitting them both with the World Tag Team Championship belts and, in doing so, reestablished themselves as heels.
