Kunjah is a town situated on Sargodha Road approximately 11 km from Gujrat, Pakistan, with a population over 30,000. Kunjah is a medium sized town with rich cultural heritage. Kunjah is known for its lush green surrounding agricultural lands.

Major Shabbir Shaheed-Nishan-i-Haider: The highest military award for bravery in battle field was awarded to Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider). He Born 28 April 1943 in Kunjah, Gujrat District. Commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment on 19 April 1964.

Major Shabbir Shariff as commander of a company of 6 FF Regiment, was ordered in December 1971 to capture high ground near Sulemanki than a company of the Assam Regiment supported by a squadron of tanks.

In a well nigh superhuman action, for the next three days and nights after crossing a minefield and massive obstacles and killing forty-three soldiers and destroying four tanks, Major Sharif and his men held two enemy battalions at bay.

But after he took over an anti-tank gun from his gunner in an attack was killed by a direct hit in the afternoon of 6 December. He was 28 years old.

A little info about the town

Kunjah is situated on Sargodha road which curves around Kunjah and there are 8 link roads connecting circular raod in downtown Kunjah to Sargodha Road on north side. There are a fair number of masjids (mosques) in Kunjah. The major share of population comprises the Muslims. About 95% population are Sunni Muslims and remaining 5% are Shi'a Muslims. Minorities like Christians are also living in Kunjah. Kunjah is politically an important town. The Nazim here is from the leading and the dominating party in this region The Pakistan Muslim League (Q). Kunjah is served by different both boys and girls schools. For boys there is a higher secondary school, a high school, and 3 primary schools. For girls there are two high schools and a primary school. Meanwhile there are about 30 private schools in the town most prominent of these include "The Educators" and Progressive Public School. Agriculture is the most people's way of earning living. The majority of natives live abroad, mostly in Greece.

"A town of the Poets"

Kunjah have produced a number of (Shair's or) poets. The major and most of famous among them are:

  • Ghaneemat Kunjahi. Muhammad Akram Ghaneemat Kunjahi better known as Ghaneemat Kunjahi; One of the greatest Persian poet history has ever produced. His poetry was even the part of textbooks taught in Iran. He is buried in Kunjah.
  • Shareef Kunjahi. One among the leading Punjabi "Adeebs" and the leading Punjabi poet. He is from the land of the historic town of Kunjah.

There are many other famous Punjabi and Urdu poets from Kunjah including Zuhair Kunjahi, Zaman Kunjahi and many more.... The famous writer and poet Anwar Maqasood has also academic relationship with Kunjah. He was a teacher in the Government Islamia High School Kunjah.
