Ric Lansing (full name Richard Lansing) is a fictional character on the popular ABC soap opera, General Hospital. The character has been played by soap opera veteran Rick Hearst, since 2002. In 2004, Hearst won a Daytime Emmy Award as "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series" for the role, at the 31st Daytime Emmy Awards.

Character storyline

Ric came to Port Charles in 2002 as the estranged half-brother of mob boss Sonny Corinthos. He quickly proved himself to be a manipulative and sometimes troubled character. According to the off-screen backstory, he blamed Sonny because their mother, Adela Corinthos, had chosen to raise Sonny, but had given baby Ric to his father and stepmother to be raised. Ric's biological father, Trevor Lansing, had blamed the child Sonny for pushing his pregnant mother down the stairs and said he didn't want Sonny in his household. Adela chose to give up Ric and to keep Sonny. Ric, a highly successful lawyer as an adult, came to Port Charles with the intention of getting even with his half-brother Sonny.

Ric ultimately abducted Sonny's pregnant wife Carly Corinthos and kept her chained to a wall in a panic room, all the while intending to raise Sonny's and Carly's son as his own with his wife Elizabeth Webber. Elizabeth miscarried her own child with Ric after her own fall down the stairs, which Ric of course blamed on Sonny (two years later, Faith Rosco, Ric's ex-lover, confessed on her deathbed to the deed). Ric ultimately came to his senses and released Carly. However, before she could return to Sonny, she was taken by Lorenzo Alcazar. Sonny and Jason tracked Alcazar to South America, and with Ric in tow, they rescued her. A few months later, Carly gave birth to a baby boy, but during labor Sonny, pointing the gun at Alcazar, accidently shoots Carly in the head. Sonny spared Ric's life for their dead mother's sake and Ric's crimes were ultimately blamed on a mental break-down.

Elizabeth divorced him when Ric couldn't get over his hatred for Sonny. Ric later married fellow lawyer, Alexis Davis, after discovering that Sonny was the father of her daughter Kristina Davis. He initially intended to use this information to his advantage, but later discovered that he had genuine feelings for Alexis and the couple had a baby girl, Molly Lansing. Ric has treated his step-daughter Kristina as his own child, often calls her "my daughter" and has vowed to protect her. Kristina calls him "Daddy Ric." However, perhaps remembering his mother's choice of Sonny over himself, Ric also feels that Alexis favors Sonny's daughter Kristina over their own daughter, Molly. He recently swore to protect Molly from this perceived favoritism.

Recent status

Ric had temporarily appeared to be reformed for about a year, but then started showing signs of his old manipulative ways. He attempted to use Sonny's bipolar disorder to his own advantage, gaslighted his half-brother and tried to make him think he was imagining things. He is currently in cahoots with Lorenzo Alcazar to kill Sonny and his right-hand man Jason Morgan, this plan however has been abandoned since Lorenzo Alcazar was murdered. Ric has since turned his attention to convicting Jason Morgan for Alcazar's murder since removing Jason would hurt his brother's organization.

Ric also recently slept with his adult step-daughter, another of Sonny's ex-lovers, the drunken Sam McCall -- the daughter Alexis gave up for adoption as a teenager. Alexis is aware of their affair, but kept silent about it for a time after she was diagnosed with lung cancer. If she dies, she wants Kristina and Molly to be raised together and felt that leaving them with Ric and Sam is the best of a series of imperfect choices. However, she recently blew up at Ric for sleeping with her daughter and ordered him out of the house. Ric wants custody of Molly, but Alexis told him "better men than him have tried" to take away one of her daughters.

He succeeded in getting custody of Molly after he presented evidence of Alexis smoking pot (to deal with her cancer).

Ric has admitted to never getting over his ex-wife, Elizabeth Webber. Though he did love Alexis, he never stopped loving Liz. In November, Jason suspected that Ric wanted Lucky Spencer to go after Jason (and vice versa) so both of them would die, leaving a clear path for Ric to be with Elizabeth. Ric also went as far as planting hydrocodone in Lucky's desk for Elizabeth to find, hoping it would shatter any hope of a reconcilation for Lucky and Elizabeth.

Ultimately, Ric's plans did not work, and Lucky and Elizabeth re-married. A few months later, Elizabeth fell into a coma after giving birth. During this time Ric confessed to her that he planted the drugs on Lucky. He also vowed to leave Lucky alone for the sake of her happiness, and to protect her from Jason Morgan - whom he sees as a threat to her.

After Lorenzo Alcazar was murdered by Jason Morgan, he snuck into Lorenzo and Skye's house and stole an audio recording that had Alcazar say Morgan and a gunshot afterwards. He had Lucky Spencer arrest Jason Morgan for the murder of Lorenzo Alcazar and had the judge deny him bail every time he asked for it. He also tried to get Cooper Barrett's friend Logan to work for him in order to get information on Sonny that will send him to prison twice, but after Logan refused he started to dig up information on Logan's dishonorable discharge to use to blackmail him with in order to get him to do what he wants. Carly threatened to tell the public that he kidnapped her when she was pregnant, chained to a wall, planned to steal her baby, give it to Elizabeth, and kill her in order to see Jason and get him to drop all charges on him and have Elizabeth help her. Ric told her she could do it if she wanted to but it would not get Jason released and he would have her arrested, put on trial for slander, and put her behind bars next to Jason.

Later the public finds out that Ric uses his power as District Attorney to get what he wants and that the evidence against Jason is illegal so he gets fired, loses custody of Molly, and Jason's name is cleared of all charges.

He fakes his death but it later blows up in his face.
