"Feedback"
Song

"Feedback" is a dance-pop/R&B song written by Rodney Jerkins, Dernst Emile, LaShawn Daniels, and Tasleema Yasin and recorded by American singer Janet Jackson. Produced by D'Mile and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, it is the lead single from Jackson's tenth studio album and first album with Island Records,[2] Discipline (see 2008 in music). The song was released as a digital download on December 26 2007[1] and impacted across-the-board at all American radio station formats on January 7 2008.[3]

Reception

Initial critical response has been mostly positive. Bill Lamb, in an article for About.com, said that Jackson "may have hit a musical home run [with "Feedback"]" and "all of that [weak album sales for 20 Y.O.] seems swept away."[4]

Billboard deemed "Feedback" a "bona fide smash" and noted that the song "features a gracious dance groove, but more so, supplies a singalong hook and distinctive melody — a funked-up 'All for You', perhaps."[5]

"Feedback" is listed as #9 of the Top 100 Pop Songs 2007 by About.com. Lamb, who also wrote this article, said that "One listen to this song makes it understandable why [Jackson] is one of the most successful recording artists of all time."[6]

Digital Spy said that "Feedback" "has everything you want from a Jackson single: hard-edged beats, plenty of hooks and enough attitude to compensate for her flimsy-as-cling-film voice." [7]

Music video

Jackson filmed the music video with British director Saam Farahmand in New York.[8] The video premiered on BETs 106 & Park as well as Yahoo! Music on January 8, 2008[9] and MTV's TRL on January 14, 2008.[citation needed] On January 21 2008, a slightly re-edited version of the video featuring a few additional scenes and extra sound effects was released on the Internet.[10]

Remix

The Official Remix to "Feedback" featuring Ciara can be heard on MySpace and YouTube as well as Mainstream Radio Stations. However, record producer Jermaine Dupri has stated that the remix was done by Ciara, and Jackson had nothing to do with it. [11] It is unclear at this point if it will be released as a download or as a commercial single.

Chart performance

"Feedback" premiered on New York City's top 40 radio station Z100 on December 12 2007. At the same time, the song leaked to various Internet websites and Clear Channel radio stations in the United States. The same day, many radio stations in major North American markets premiered the song, resulting in "Feedback" being heard by 4.175 million people in the United States within its first twenty-four hours of radio airplay.[12] The song currently sits at number thirty on the Mediabase Top 40 Airplay Charts.

"Feedback" debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number eighty-four, moved up thirty-two places in its second week to number fifty-two, moved to number fifty-one in its third week, and currently sits at number sixty-one. It has also thus far peaked in the top forty of the U.S. Billboard Pop 100 at number thirty-eight, and reached number thirty-nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It has also charted on the U.S. Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 at number twenty-six.

On the Canadian Hot 100, "Feedback" debuted at number forty-eight the week ending January 12 2008, making it the highest debut of the week. The song is also her first appearance on the Canadian chart since "Just a Little While" peaked at number three in 2004. So far, it has peaked at the number twenty-five.

On the New Zealand RIANZ chart, "Feedback" debuted at number thirty-eight on January 28 2008, and was the third highest debut of that week behind The Dream's "Shawty Is a 10" and Timbaland's "Scream". This was Jackson's first song on the chart since "Call on Me" in 2006. In its second week, the song remained on the chart but dropped down to number forty, in it's third week the song shot up the chart to a position of seventeen.

It has already become successful in some countries, hitting the top 20 on Australia's ARIA Urban Singles chart and in Bulgaria, the top 10 on the Deutsche Black Charts in Germany where it has peaked at #6. It has also charted on Irish Charts, and so far has peaked at number #19 on FM 104's most requested music chart.
