Following the speedway promoters (BSPA) Annual General Meeting in November 2007, it was announced that the points limit for team building would be drastically lowered in order to help clubs that were struggling financially and to create more parity between the clubs. This meant that Bjarne Pedersen and Jason Crump could not both remain at Poole if the Pirates were to create a competitive team. Therefore, soon after the outcome of the AGM, it was announced that Crump would be leaving the club.
They remain favourites for relegation in 2008.

Crump returned to his former club Belle Vue on loan, with the Aces having an option to buy him in 2009.

Pedersen was instead retained by Poole for 2008. Poole promoter Matt Ford stated that Pedersen was chosen over Crump due to his six years of loyalty to the club, and his lower average.

Academy Team
Poole were the Academy League Cup champions in 2007, defeating the Newcastle Gems 45-26 over two legs.

Poole announced they would continue operating an Academy team in 2008 but were unable to field a team in the Conference League due to stadium restrictions, and the time curfew on race nights meant they only had time to run six heats in the second half of meetings, not the necessary fifteen.

The 2006 World Champion, Jason Crump returned to the Poole side for the 2007 season to ride alongside fellow Speedway Grand Prix rider and Pirates captain Bjarne Pedersen. Crump was signed for a club record fee of £28,000.

Poole were predicted by many critics to have a squad that was too 'top heavy' with both Crump and Pedersen in the team. Despite a good start to the season, the Pirates form in the latter part of the year dipped. Poole finished 4th in the Elite League table, but were beaten by the Coventry Bees 55-38 in the play-off semi finals.

Brief History
Speedway was first staged at the Poole Stadium on 26th April 1948. The Pirates lined up for their inaugural season as members of the 3rd Division of the National League. Poole won their first title in 1951 and with it promotion to the 2nd Division of the National League.

Poole won the 2nd Division title at the first attempt, but were denied First Division status by the Speedway Control Board. The following two years (1953 and 1954) saw the Pirates narrowly finishing as Division 2 runners up.

In 1955 the Pirates again won the Division 2 Championship and this time promotion to the National League Division One, becoming the first and only club to ever have won promotion from the bottom league to the top tier.

However, by the end of the 1956 season, the Poole promotion closed the club, blaming poor attendences and the introduction of petrol rationing due to the Suez crisis.

Despite losing their league status, Poole Stadium continued to stage meetings during 1957, including two Division One league meetings. Rayleigh Rockets promoter Vic Gooden took over the promoting rights of Poole at the end of the year but left after two unsuccessful years.

By 1960, the Knott family took over the promotion at Poole. The stadium was redeveloped and the track was made slightly smaller to accommodate a greyhound racing track. Also in 1960 the speedway league structure was re-formed and Poole opted to join the Provincial League which took its place behind the National League. Poole finished joint top of the table with Rayleigh but lost out on points difference. Success returned to Poole with the league title in 1961 and 1962.

Following a power struggle between the SCB and promoters, the British League was formed in 1965, with promoters gaining more control. Poole joined the British League with 18 other teams and remained in there for the next 20 years. They won the league title in 1969.

Mid-way through the 1979 season Reg Fearman bought the promoting rights, and continued to run the club until 1984 when financial problems forced the club to close.

The club was rescued by Weymouth Wildcats promoters Peter Ansell and Mervyn Stew, who moved their team to Poole for the start of the 1985 season. The team name was changed to the Poole Wildcats and they entered the National League, the second league tier of speedway. The name change proved to be unpopular and was reverted to the Poole Pirates after two seasons. Poole finished runners up in 1988 and then won the league in 1989 and the league and cup double in 1990.

After the 1990 season the leagues were re-structured again and Poole re-joined the top flight of speedway in the UK, the British League. Poole won the British League Championship in 1994. In 1997 the structure of the leagues was once again changed with Poole joining the Elite League

Poole initially struggled in the Elite League and were sold to current promoters Matt Ford and Mike Golding in 1998, who turned around the fortunes of the club. Poole finished runners up in 1999 and 2001, and have won the title twice, including a league and cup treble in 2003 and a league and cup double in 2004.
