Michael Morgan [2] (born Michael Morgan then known as Michael Alan Quartermaine then Michael Corinthos III) is a fictional character on the ABC soap opera, General Hospital. He is the son of Carly Corinthos Jacks and the late A.J. Quartermaine. Michael was later adopted by Sonny Corinthos. Michael is portrayed by Dylan Cash.

Fictional character history

Custody battles over Michael have been ongoing on the show for over a decade. Michael was conceived when his mother Carly had a one-night stand with AJ Quartermaine while she was involved with Dr. Tony Jones. When she discovered she was pregnant, Carly tried to keep AJ from discovering the truth, going so far as to heft the recovering alcoholic AJ into a laundry cart, dump him in a back alley and sprinkle beer all over him to make him think he had fallen off the wagon. Midway through her pregnancy, with both AJ and Tony threatening to take the baby from her, Carly persuaded her former lover Jason Morgan to claim that he was the father. After Michael's birth, Carly developed post-partum depression and couldn't bear to even touch her son, who was born with a heart defect. Jason took him home and raised him for his first months. He had the baby baptized Michael after his good friend, mob boss Sonny Corinthos. Carly reappeared at the baby's baptism.

Dr. Tony Jones abducted baby Michael, thinking he was his son. Michael was recovered and Tony was put on trial. Carly shot Tony in open court and was eventually committed to a mental hospital, where Jason took Michael to visit her. Jason continued to raise Michael, this time with help from his girlfriend Robin Scorpio. Robin ultimately decided to tell AJ Quartermaine the truth, devastating Jason and ending her relationship. Carly married AJ to keep Michael, whom AJ named Michael Alan Quartermaine, but the court gave Jason visitation rights. AJ found it difficult to connect with his toddler son, who cried whenever AJ spent time with him and was attached to Jason. Jason ultimately left town, giving up the fight for Michael, when Carly betrayed him by sleeping with Sonny.

Sonny and Carly married and Sonny strong-armed AJ into giving up custody and then his parental rights. He had his henchmen hang AJ from a meat hook and threatened to kill him if he didn't sign away Michael, whose name was legally changed to Michael Corinthos III. Sonny has raised Michael since he was a toddler. Michael has grown up with a mob lifestyle, thinking it normal to have bodyguards and often witnessing or hearing about violence. He has imitated Sonny's violent behavior, sometimes throwing barware, ordering his mother around, and once even ordering a hit on an enemy, although it wasn't clear if he totally understood what he was asking for. At times the parents of classmates have refused to let their children play with Michael because of his mafia connections. He's also missed a lot of school because he is frequently sent to Sonny's private island for safety when Sonny is threatened. Michael is also close to Jason, who is his biological half-uncle, but the one constant in his life was his nanny, Leticia, who was hired by Jason right after Michael's birth and took care of him until her death in the fall of 2007.

Sonny and Carly have fought over custody of Michael and his younger brother Morgan several times during their on-again, off-again marriage. Michael was abducted by AJ in 2005 and AJ tried to turn around the boy's thinking about his parents and about AJ For a time it appeared that AJ had succeeded in reversing the way Michael thought about the Quartermaines. However, AJ had gone about it the wrong way. He had been in cahoots with mobster Faith Rosco and had arranged for the kidnapping of all of Sonny's children. While the two younger children, Kristina Davis and Morgan Corinthos, were recovered, Michael was presumed dead. AJ intended to take his son to another country and live there under assumed names. He was initially helped by his father, Dr. Alan Quartermaine, who sympathized with AJ Alan ultimately turned AJ in when he realized that his son was willing to be violent to get his way. AJ, who broke his back during a fight with his brother Jason Morgan, who was trying to apprehend him, was taken to the hospital. There, he was eventually murdered. For a time Michael was suspected of killing his biological father, but the real culprit turned out to be Dr. Asher Thomas, whom AJ had been blackmailing. AJ had paid Thomas to kill Jason years earlier when he was comatose after the accident that a drunken AJ had caused. AJ hadn't wanted Jason to be left in a vegetative state.

After the abduction, Michael was treated by Dr. Thomas for a time and was confused and alienated from his family. He eventually regained his equilibrium. Most recently, he has had to adjust to his mother's relationship with Jasper Jacks. Michael wants his parents to be together.

Michael is dealing with the death of his nanny of 11 years, Leticia. He has asked his father for him to kill the men that did it. Sonny became upset with that request, stating that Leticia would not have wanted him to grow up to be the kind of man that would want revenge. Sonny told him that revenge leaves a hole in your heart and hurts your soul and later admitted to a friend (Kate Howard) that the experience "shook" him and forced him to face the realization that his business had so altered the landscape of his sons' life in the way that it has. Sonny stated to Kate that he has considered giving up his boys so that they could live a normal life away from the violence, and is conflicted by his love and need for them and doing what is best for them in the long run. (above discussions carried out on General Hospital starting Friday, September 7, 2007, Monday, September 10, 2007 and Tuesday September 11, 2007)

Soon after Leticia died Michael had to cope with the death of his aunt, Emily Quartermaine. His reaction to Emily's death was much the same as his reaction to Leticia's. He was angry at his father because he felt that he let the killer kill Emily. He told Sonny that if someone threatens him or his family, he needs to be taken out. On the day of Emily's funeral service, Carly told the boys that they should do something to honor Emily's memory. They decided to go out for root beer floats because thats what Emily used to make for them when they were sick. When they arrive at Kelly's, Michael began pacing outside. When Jax asked him what was wrong, Michael exploded saying that Emily shouldn't have died and that the killer was going to have to pay. Jax tried to calm Michael down by telling him that the best way to honor Emily's memory would not be to make anybody pay because Emily wouldn't want him to grow up to be a killer.

" The Red Menace"

All those years of growing up in the mob are recently starting to show the effects. Michael has full intention of becoming a mobster and running Sonny's business when he grows up. Sonny has sat down with Michael and told him that he will never be a part of his business and will live a very different life than he did because he will be provided with things he didn't have growing up such as a good education, family, as well as choices.

Michael continues to display a mobster like attitude at home and at school. He believes that those who do wrong against him "have to pay". When Morgan accidentally scratched one of his video games, Michael took a hammer and busted all of his action figures. When Carly caught him and asked what he was doing, he said he was "getting revenge." At school he "got revenge" against a kid who called Sonny a gangster by punching him in the mouth. It has been mentioned numerous times that his attitude resembles that of Johnny Zacchara. Johnny has told Carly that Michael reminds him a lot of himself as a child. Sonny and Jason have also said that the way Johnny acts reminds them a lot of Michael and they worry that, eventually, Michael will end up like Johnny.

Search for a Gun

With the TMK at large, Michael fears strongly for his mother and brothers lives. He snuck away from school to Sonny's office in an attempt to get a gun Sonny has in his desk drawer. Jason walks in and catches him kneeling in front of the open drawer. Michael tries to lie and say he had a free period and wanted to see Sonny but Jason isn't fooled. He sits Michael down and tells him that even though he is glad that Michael wants to protect his mother and brother, using a gun is always wrong. He tells Michael that he is old enough to know the damage guns can do to people when they get shot but he doesn't know the damage it causes to the person behind the gun. He told Michael to having a gun doesn't make him a man. Jason sends Michael off to school and locks the drawer with the gun inside. Michael returns only to find the drawer locked. He grabs a letter opener off the desk and it about to pick the lock when reconsiders and replaces the opener on the desk and leaves, something that is noticed by Jason who was returning in time to see Michael leave empty handed.

Michael, however, doesn't have a change of heart. He merely has a different idea. He heads to a back alleyway where he meets 2 teenage thugs. They tell him if he can come up with the money, they'll get him "the stuff" he wants. Michael enlists Morgans help ( although he doesn't tell him why ) and they pretend Morgan is raising money for school. They go around to the hospital and Kelly's asking for donations. When they are finished, Michael gives Morgan his share of the money and tells him to go home and if anybody asks, he stayed late after school. He then heads back to the alley where he hands his money over and receives his very own gun. They then ask him if he wants bullets with it. They say they'll sell them to him for $10 a bullet. Michael tells them again that he doesn't have any money and they tell him to look them up when he does.

He later overhears Jason telling Carly that he thinks the TMK is still on the loose. This pushes Michael into stealing money from his mothers purse and heading to the docks to buy bullets. After he has paid and received the bullets, his grandfather, Mike, heads onto the docks and catches Michael with the two teenagers. He demands that Michael tell him what he bought. Michael, grudgingly, hands over the bullets. Mike asks Michael if he has a gun and Michael denys it. Mike gives Michael back the bullets and tells him to the throw them into the harbor. Michael does throw them away, all except one.

Shooting Number 1

Michael originally hid the gun and bullet under his bed and tried his best to keep Morgan out of his bedroom. Morgan, being a normal little brother, didn't listen and went into Michael's room to retrieve a ball that had rolled under the bed. He discovered the box and opened it to find the gun. He picked it up but then he heard Michael coming and he tried to hurry and put it away. Michael walked in to find him with the box and wrestled it out of his hands and told him it wasn't a toy. Michael barely got the lid on the box when Sonny walked into the room. He told Michael he knew that Mike had caught him buying bullets and made it very clear to Michael that if he heard or saw that he was anywhere near a gun, there would be hell to pay. His exact words were "You had better turn around and run. And keep running!". Michael moved his hiding to his bureau drawer only to come home and find his mother putting clothes away. She didn't find the gun although she came very close to doing so. After chasing his mother and Jax out of his room, he realized that he couldn't keep the gun safely hidden in the house so he headed to a back ally to hide it. While trying to move a piece of wood the gun fell out of his hand, hit the ground, and went off. Kate was struck with the stray bullet.

Michael ran over to Kate and tried to help her but he was at a loss of what to do. He started remembering all the things Sonny had said to him about what he should do if he was caught with a gun. He reached to pick up her cell phone to call for help but when he found it covered in blood he freaked out and ran. He hid out on a cargo ship where he called Carly. When she picked up the phone, Michael choked out that it was all his fault and that he was really sorry. Just when Carly asked where he was the workers found Michael hiding causing him to bolt off the ship. He ran into the woods and is staying in the home of a hermit named Peg. While Michael stays there, Peg leaves him a telephone next to his bed anytime he wants to call his parents. Michael then calls Carly and tells her to meet him at Alcazar's warehouse. When Michael meets Carly he tells her that he was the one that shot Kate and he tells her not to tell Sonny. They are seen leaving the warehouse and then it explodes. Johnny pulls Michael out of the wreckage and takes him to Sonny who had already gotten out of the warehouse. Michael tells Sonny that he shot Kate, Sonny doesn't blame Michael.

Michael's actions do not go without consequences however. Carly was pregnant during the time of the explosion and she was found in the water suffering from hypothermia. She was rushed to the hospital where at first it seemed all would be well but while she was recovering she suffered a miscarriage. When Carly informed Michael and Morgan that she had lost the baby, Michael felt an overwhelming surge of guilt which he is going to have to live with for the rest of his life. Michael does not make it.

Shooting Number 2

After Kate's shooting, Sonny and Carly decided that things needed to change where Michael was concerned. Carly began the first steps by taking away Michael's video games and limiting his time with Sonny. Sonny decided that Michael needed to see that his business was more than just violence, unaware that Claudia and Johnny Zacchara were plotting his downfall. He called Michael to ask if he would like to go to the warehouse when a shipment was being unloaded and he jumped at the chance. Sonny had Kate pick him up and before they left Kate had a talk with Michael about gun usage. She explained to him that if was right of him to want to protect his mother and brother although he had gone about it the wrong way. After a good talk, they went to Sonny's warehouse where much to Michael's shock it was nothing more than a coffee warehouse. Sonny tells Michael that if he plays his cards right it will all be his one day. After which, Sonny ruffles Michael's hair and sends him off to look around. As he is walking back to Kate he notices a glint of light shining off the gun of a sniper(Claudia's friend Dr. Ian Devlin) hidden in the racks of coffee. He runs and pushes Kate to the ground, protecting her. However the bullet meant for Sonny ricocheted off of one of the racks into Michael's head.

Michael was rushed to General Hospital with his father and mother by his side, with Jason and Kate following suit. Patrick Drake and Robin Scorpio inform them that the bullet has become lodged in Michael's brain and he is rushed into surgery. Michael survives the surgery, however Patrick and Robin informs them that Michael is in a permanent coma and that he will never regain consciousness. Many people have come by and visited, including an incredibly guilty Claudia, who apologized for allowing him to end up in a coma and gave him her mother's rosary beads. Carly still believes her son will wake up and has hardly left his bedside. On April 18, 2008, Michael opened his eyes from his coma. Both Robin and Patrick tell Carly that its just a muscle reflex that he's in a permanent vegitative state and will never wake up. Jax has doctors from Berlin come and inspect Michael. Since General Hospital has let go of Dylan Cash, this situation will give them the chance to age Michael.
